There was another UA-camr that confirmed with USPS that you're allowed to use the priority mail boxes inside the priority mail envelopes, as long as it's all being used to send something priority.

I worked for the USPS for over 15 years. It does not matter what you put inside the flat rate bag or boxes (as long as it is mailable within USPS guidelines of course). That's USPS Marketing, they want you you to use their products whether its purchased or free. Easy for the postal workers to see & identify it in the sorting plants for the quickest delivery. It's their material so "If it fits, it ships. Love your channel

I've pretty much done the same thing with computer GFX/video cards, but I make my own box that the card in anti-static bag inside a PFRE goes into, then that box goes in PFRE, and usually another PFRE or 2. Buyers usually comment on how well packed they are so I guess it's ok.

  • @gusgerstorff8547

I'll say this. USPS has a vested interest in keeping resellers in business. The more packages sent, the better for them. So you use an extra mailer to keep the product inside safe, thus pleasing your customer, who might buy from you again, continuing the cycle. I think everybody wins. If they don't flag a 1092 box combined with a 1095 to ship a tennis racket then I think the same understanding applies to your Wii. The intent of any law or regulation is to deter egregious acts, not minor violations.

I've been charged up the --- for frakenboxing priority. I hear that you can do it but maybe my local office is extremely stingey since the population is 5k people they drive long distances. Although you get better MPG, but the postal workers may not since they have to stop a lot more than us. I don't want that to ever happen again so I stay away from priority unless what I have is a perfect fit & cost. A lot of the time I accidentally even put priority labels on brown boxes.

I package the 1096 in the flat rate envelope all the time.
I started doing this after Usps broke several of my items.
The way I look at it is someone is going to ultimately pay for the negligence of the Usps. I have no problem putting back on them. Why should I have to eat their mistakes.
It’s a lot easier to do this that file a claim wait for the investigation process, reimbursed or send another item to the buyer.
This isn’t even a beginning to the Usps negligence. There is NO moral dilemma here for me. Screw em they made a box that fits into a envelope.

I just discovered my quarterly $25 ebay coupon code for shipping supplies / boxes. Regularly finding small boxes for small items around the house to ship USPS first class instead of priority (with their "free" boxes) has always been a challenge. I ship ~10 items a month.

When using USPS Priority Mail in many cases you are better off using your own packing material (boxes) than the preprinted USPS PM boxes. For example, if you use a box similar in size to a USPS medium PM box to send an item weighing one pound from Los Angeles to New York it'll cost you ~9.68 discounted from ~11.60 when you purchase the shipping label from eBay. When you use the flat rate PM box it'll cost you ~14.25 discounted from ~16.10 when you purchase the shipping label from eBay. This is a no-brainer. You can get 12x9x3 boxes and 10x8x6 boxes from DollarTree in bulk packs of 25 for 1.25 each delivered to your local store for pickup so no shipping charge either. Not to mention that same store has dozens and dozens of small merchandise boxes available daily they're glad to give you for the asking. And by the way, charge your buyers the USPS published rates, not your discounted eBay rate, unless you have money to give away.

I agree with you that there are two main perspectives in this. These are priority mail items. SO one perspective that perhaps has not been brought up. Perhaps this is a form of rationalization but regardless here it is. You, by using the additional materials are ensuring the item gets to where it is going in good shape thusly removing the insurance claim on the item saving the post office that expense. I suppose worse case is you could rather than using the box wrap the unit in cardboard before putting it into the envelope. Basically same protection... anyhow I appreciate your strait forward look at this and evaluating its ethical aspect. Good man!

When you order supplies from usps website, you have to check agreeing that you won't misuse the packaging. I also never knew that you can't use usps priority tape on white priority boxes. They are supposed to only be used to seal a plain box, as a way to identify it for the usps workers to know it's a priority box. That's probably even more of an unknown, because most post offices offer the tape for customers to use. Whenever I order tape over the phone I have to agree that I will only be using it on non-priority labeled/plain boxes.

Which makes sense if you look at the restrictions and rules on their website. You’re not abusing it how a lot of people do the same thing.

Exactly what I’ve done for years, 1096 into flat rate. One of the main postal branch managers actually taught me that many years ago and I’ve been passing that along. He told me they were designed that way. But also, while being tougher to do and since it’s not going to be machinable, the paper flat rate envelopes have exactly the same volume for even a lower cost. Just all seams must be on original folds and must meet the normal safety aspects of shipping. I do tape the seams when I’ve done this. Also for thicker more narrow items, you can take any of the thinner boxes like you used for the software (no flat rate of course) and while flat cut into 4 somewhat equal pieces like a cross across length and height. You can then build the corners up with the tape on ends. Use 2 of the corners to enclose whatever item to ship. Cut/trim as needed to fit into FR bubble envelope. Basically Frankenbox inside the FR lol

Rule: Postal supplies are to be used for shipping via the postal service. Check. You complied with that one.
No rule against putting one or more item inside TWO nested postal shipping containers. Or three or four nested containers! Check. You cant break a rule that doesn't exist.
The way I see it, you are using postal supplies for mailing via the postal service so how can there be a problem? You are not altering any of the supplies but merely putting your items inside them and sealing them up using their own sealing tape. That's precisely what the postal service says you should do.
Part of the beauty of government is that government can never seem to write a set of rules that cover every conceivable situation. Therefore someone always finds a way to game the system in their favor, all of which is perfectly legal because there are no rules prohibiting it. I like this quote which speaks to the ingenuity of talented minds:
"There is nothing foolproof to a sufficiently talented fool."

One person will rip the USPS and say screw them, and yet another will say it's abusing their intent for free supplies. At some point, within some USPS debt interval, the USPS will just raise their rates. And then we'll complain about that lol. Life goes on.

I enjoyed you video and it engaged me so much I'm commenting which I rarely do. Good job. If in doubt, check the Domestic Mail Manual - DMM. I did a quick search and didn't see where this packaging technique isn't allowed. I didn't see anywhere that suggests Frankenboxing isn't allowed. Using priority packaging to ship through anyone other than USPS is not allowed according the the DMM. If a postal clerk or carrier tells you you're not allowed to do something, ask them to see the DMM reference. If they can't, ask for a supervisor or postmaster. If you're still not satisfied, send a letter to you're Congressional Reps off (I've done this a few times in my life). Postmasters hate responding to questions from congressional aids. I believe only a USPS postal inspector can open priority mail to check things out. They will not waste time to see if priority packaging is being misappropriated. My 2 cents.

If it sold too fast, it was priced too low.
And technically, priority mail boxes/envelopes are not free, you pay for them when you ship an item. And according to USPS, these are only suppose to be used to be for shipping. You are technically using the small boxes as packing material.

  • @angelawhite7140

You are using all of supplies provided by USPS to ship via USPS. An example of "Abusing" the free supplies would be using USPS bubble mailers to wrap or use as filler in a 1st Class envelope or box. Now that would be wrong! In my opinion, You are all good dude 👍

  • @George-go2gp
    @George-go2gp 4 роки тому

Well since you asked, I think it is abusing the free supplies. The way I look at it is that each box or envelope in theory would be used for a shipment. One shipment, one box/envelope. If you double up boxes on one shipment then you are increasing the PO's cost for each shipment. What do companies do when their costs increase? They raise prices. People bring up frankenboxes, but I think that's not a similar situation. If an item is big enough to need a frankenbox then you're probably spending enough in postage to offset the cost of an additional box. Anyway that's my opinion.

    • @yuuki-yuuki
      @yuuki-yuuki 4 роки тому

I think packing material is still different than the actual cost of shipping. For example you can use their free boxes to reconstruct a bigger box and still pay the per weight priority price. As long as you use the supplies to pack and ship stuff as priority I think it falls in its intended use. The biggest cost of shipping is on transit and management labor, and an extra box for shipping would not increase the cost much. At the end of the day, if the package is damaged, USPS would have to pay for the damage up to $100, and that's a lot more than a few cents from a box.

I don't see a problem with it. Going to the flea markets and yard sales I see people using USPS boxes to package items for sale and storage all the time. I feel using their boxes for storage is a bit shady unless it is for re-use, just because you can or other do, doesn't mean you should in my opinion, but its just that, my opinion. I reuse my boxes if possible to keep things out of the landfill and recycle too early in the boxes useable life.

Great sales, Josh! I go through the same thought process too when something sells almost immediately: Did I price it too low??? I think it's natural brief angst. But it always ends up that I'm so glad it sold and out the door and to a new good home! :-)
Thank you also for addressing the 1096L in the PFRE issue! When I first started, I read that technique on the ebay forum, and have used that a couple handfuls of times. But each time I did wonder whether that's okay to do. So I made myself feel better about it by lightly taping down the 1096L box, and that way it would be absolutely usable by the buyer.
By the way, I've seen a postal worker helpfully slide a Priority Mail box into a Flat-Rate Priority Mail box for a customer to save them money.
Just got a USPS Frankenbox in the mail yesterday that looked wild, using I think two OBOX7 boxes, but it got the product to me safely, I think Frankenboxes happen all the time, using 2 USPS boxes together, and they're perfectly legit. So after reading your viewer comments, I feel better about using the 1096L in the PFRE! Thank you for the super content, Josh, and stay well and safe!

Great thing about conscience is that it always tells you when something is not right. "Am I abusing" in itself is enough to know it is abusing. But Yes it is abusing. It is not free for them. it coast them money to produce them. If you had paid or the box, then it's a different story. Eventually, they will come to realization and then they will start charging for box and bags. Won't be free!
If you are doing this regularly, it's not right thing to do. if you are doing once or twice it's okay and understandable. If you are going to be doing this regularly, Just by the same types of box in bulk. then use their free envelops or bags to ship it.

I went to drop off packages in the post office today. Another customer was at the counter ahead of me. The lady originally had her items in a priority express mall envelope. The post office worker told her that was not permitted but she allowed her anyway to ship it as it was.

Technically yes it is 100% not allowed that way. We all do things here & there, but if they open the package & see that, you will get it back. Just saying. You can frankenbox boxes together, but using new supplies inside new supplies is not allowed. Don't hate the messenger. It would be the same as using padded mailers as filler instead of using bubble wrap.

Hi you know those little Kiosk post office machines inside their entrance? I almost always use them. I got stung today. I had a 2 ounce item. the kiosk was out and I should have waited. When the kiosk is out in the mornings means no one has added labels and or receipt paper so the kiosk won't function. I had already said I would ship this morning so in I walked with a plain small 6"x 9" bubble padded envelope. So went in line and stood for 35 minutes. Finally up in front of the person and I told her the cheapest USPS First Class. I was waiting to insert my card to pay and I saw 1.36 then I saw cost for priority etc. I quit looking and when she said insert your card it read 4.65 cents!!!! I would have stayed to get the cheaper price but there were so many others I just paid and walked away. Point being on the Kiosk it would have only been 1.36. See if I will do that again. They make a lot of money. especially if they overcharge like they did me on a 2 ounce item. (it was a rainbow loom bracelet)
