The OctoPrint MultiCam plugin page should just have a link to this video. This is an amazing video, and after all my searching it’s the only resource I’ve found that fully explains, in more-or-less layman’s terms, how to make multiple cameras work with the MultiCam plugin.
There are some coding gurus and people with lots of experience who have contempt for those of us who aren’t experts. I’ve seen people even in this comments section who fit this bill, saying that 3D printing isn’t plug & play and that if you don’t know this stuff, then basically you have no business 3D printing. There’s no room for that kind of elitist mentality. If it weren’t for hobbyist printers fueling and funding this field, the technology would be nowhere near what it is today.
All this is to say, thank you so much, Chris, for striking the perfect balance in this video, by assuming the viewer to be neither a total ignoramus nor a first rate computer genius.
It’s actually mind blowing how few resources out there actually seek to strike this balance, and I really appreciate you taking the time and care to actually teach people and help grow this amazing field of technology.

I have had my three usb cams set up like this for quite some time. It works great at first, but then the streams drop off one by one. Sometimes a reboot of the Pi brings them back, sometimes not. Drives me crazy. The rest of Octoprint runs fine, so no apparent memory leak or anything like that. I’m guessing it is one of my other plugins that interferes. Great video as always!

For the least amount of issues I highly recommend using a mix of cameras. I've run into issues on multple OSs with multiple cameras having the same Manufacturer and device ID on the same USB bus. Also if you are running into USB bus bandwidth limitations you can use USBtop, much like htop, iftop, to find which camera is hogging the bus.

@@kazolar Oh my god, thank you! You just saved my RPi-illiterate a$$ about 2 hours of internet searching, if my recent luck with this stuff is any indication. Seriously, thank you!
Edit: Well crap- when I used the command ls /dev/v4l/by-bath, it brings up 7 different strings of data with different index numbers and variations like "codec" or "isp". I'll do some searching and experimenting to see which one works and I'll try to remember to report back here which one worked in case anyone else finds it helpful.
Edit 2: I got it to work by using the device path called "platform-fd500000.pcie-pci-0000:01:00.0-usb-0:1.4.2:1.0-video-index0", so hopefully that's a good reference for someone. I'm no expert, so I have no idea if this is the correct route to go for everyone, but it worked for me.

    Great video!
just one question, so my octopi.txt does not include the same parameters as the one you are showing in the video, it appears to be missing some parts like the #camera="auto" do I just add it? . also I have setup Gphoto with octolapse previously to use my DSLR for timelapses, and now I would like to add my C920 to the pi and use it as the default webcam since my DSLR does not provide a stream and my snapshots are actually saved in the Camera's SD card instead of the Pi. do I edit the octopi.txt inside /boot for using it for the C920 or do I create a new octopi.txt like you did for it and keep the default one untouched? I want the C920 to supply snapshots to my telegram bot since the DSLR won't cut it.
Thanks again for making it so easy to do these things as some of us are not as experienced as you are and struggle to make it happen.

    • @ChrisRiley
      @ChrisRiley  Рік тому

Yes, they changed this up right after I made this video. RPi cam is no longer supported in this way, so it defaults to USB, no statement needed. You can do either, but creating a new file for the C920 might be cleaner. Glad the videos have helped you! :)

haproxy is also a must if you use a web-application that adheres to recent protection-standards and has tight CORS headers. Apparently OctoPrint isn't that security-minded in this regard and as long as you use it within your LAN only, I can't really hold that against them. With Mainsail however, I did have to map the cameras into the same host as the Mainsail UI to get them to show in the UI, but having all these camera's with Klipper and Mainsail is probably a totally different video ;-)

    • @ChrisRiley

They easiest way would be to setup octoprint like this just with no printers attached. Then on your Pi with printers attached, just use the camera pi IP instead of local host. Not sure of the load savings, but it might be worth a try.

Over complicating? Wtf? Really? It’s amazing what people think 3D printers, software and 3rd party addons knowledge level should be. 3D printers are not plug and play… unless you like crappy prints and don’t know any better. Then buy a Bamboo labs and be done with it and stop watching UA-cam videos on 3D printing. After that you can spend your time talking to Bamboo email support to replace your broken proprietary hardware. 3D printing has come along way over the years… it’s close but not perfect. Yet. It’s still a DIY hobby with a lot of smart people making improvements that other companies are incorporating as their own. I would like to say a BIG “Thank You!” to Chris for simplifying these processes for the masses. Keep up the great work Chris! ❤❤❤

@@woodwaker1 Bamboo is nice for those that want to just print. AMS is another story just like the MMU2 was. But, nothing on the market is plug and play and or maintenance free. Closed source and proprietary especially from China is a little ironic given they are the worst for copyright infringement. But, the guys from DJI are very smart and no company has ever come into the market with such high quality printer since Prusa. So… it is good for innovation and competition. Given bamboo labs is still new as far as being on the market. Only time will tell if quality products and customer service will last. The stories are already coming out and almost as many bad issues as good. Time will tell.

I’ve seen others say that the bambu labs Studio software and Handy will not work completely without being connected to the cloud. Some say most things work others say studio will slice but not see the printer without the cloud. And Handy won’t work at all without the cloud. The WIKI doesn’t state early… things on the site are up for interpretation with what may be left vague for a reason? Is the firmware safe? Also is the printer itself secure? They have addressed the security issues stating it wasn’t a priority when building the printer and it is now kinda safe? Plus with security issues with IoT and sending data to the cloud and to other prying eyes? I noticed they finally put out the code for Bambu Studio. So… you get the direction I am going with this. Yes it prints good out of the box, for most. But, I want the real dirt on this printer.
Prusa XL is killing me… chop chop!

I have 3 webcams on a powered usb hub (2 Logi Brio’s and a generic usb cam for a nozzle cam). I can see all 3 with the ls /dev/v4l/by-id command. After configuring the octopi.txt, webcam2.txt, and webcam3.txt files (the two webcam#.txt files are in the octopi.conf.d folder), only the 2 Brio’s streams show up when duplicating tabs and adding the port number. On one reboot, the nozzle cam and one of the Brio's were the 2 available cams. After rebooting again, I was back to the two Brio's. Any idea why the nozzle cam won’t show up? Could this be overtaxing the Pi? All cams are set to default resolution 640x480 @ 10fps.

I wouldn't think it was a Pi performance issue. Only thing I can think of is maybe it is trying to access the alternate stream (index 1 rather than 0) Take a look in /var/log/syslog after a reboot and see what the errors might be talking about.
