You hit the nail on the head. Thom Yorke has actually said he thinks this is the most beautiful song they’ve ever done. This song has helped me in so many ways
Hi. Great reaction. You definitely picked up on the vibe of what Thom was writing about: I see others have already described his conversation with Michael Stipe and the advice he got, which inspired this song. Radiohead evolved a lot from album to album, as you can tell from comparing this song to Creep, so it's best to take their albums in order. So hit the album "The Bends" next. A good first song would be "Fake Plastic Trees" or "Street Spirit". Take care of yourself, and be well. Oh, and since you took note of the strings, one of the things that make Radiohead unique is Jonny Greenwood who plays lead guitar but is a multi-instrumentalist and additionally is a composer. He's worked with the recently deceased classical composer Penderecki and scored a number of films, mostly for Paul Thomas Anderson. So his string arrangements go above and beyond the usual chord block strings you get in pop and rock songs. Here's the video about him: ua-cam.com/video/HRN8db6ZX38/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared Peace from SF
The background of this song was Thom Yorke was ready to give up on the band and could not cope based on the stress of their Ok Computer tour (the film 'Meeting People is Easy' dives into this tour) and starting to formulate the next album. He got some advice from Michael Stipe of REM to "Pull the shutters down and say 'I'm not here, this isn't happening." As you were talking about, the song is about disassociation and stepping outside yourself. I take the last chaotic section as an especially difficult situation, which Thom really has to disassociate from ("HEEEEERRRREEE"), and as he belts the climactic vocal out the strings resolve into a satisfying ending by the acoustic guitar.
Thank you so much for the input and information! It's sad to hear that he felt like this in the first place, but in doing so, he made such an emotional, beautiful song. As a huge REM fan, it for some reason makes me happy to hear that Michael Stipe supported Thom, as even advice like that can go so far as to help! I agree with you on the chaotic area of the song, and coupled with the sudden calmness followed afterwards... I can't help but feel like it conveys feeling empty, disassociated, and depressed better than most music I have heard- Thank you once again for the comment and information! 🙂
Great reaction: the best music reactions are always from the body language of the listener! Thom Yorke said quite a few years ago that this was the most beautiful song Radiohead ever did - though there have been a lot of beautiful songs added since then... In a similar (yet always distinctive) pensive vibe would be (in no particular order) their "Pyramid Song", "Codex", "Videotape", "Street Spirit", "You and Whose Army?" and at least a half a dozen other songs other comments will almost certainly suggest...
Great reaction to one of my all-time favourite Radiohead songs...and you're right, you didn't need to pause this song to react, this type of music is best left to be played out before reacting. So MANY great Radiohead songs to choose from for reactions: some of my favourites that I am positive you would love are (in no particular order:) Exit Music (for a film); Subterranean Homesick Alien; The Tourist; Street Spirit (Fade Out); Fake Plastic Trees; Pyramid Song; Everything In Its Right Place; Reckoner; Nude; Codex;.......Cheers from an old guy in South Australia
Thanks Mate, I'm glad you enjoyed :) I always feel guilty for pausing songs, especially like this- But hopefully I didn't break up the song too much with the pauses that I did do. I'll add all the songs you have recommended onto my list, and I'll work my way through them inbetween some of the other artists :) I believe I'll be doing fake plastic trees next 🤔 Anyway, I really appreciate the support and comment :) I can't wait to keep exploring their music ♡
Those are two of my favorite songs from OKC not many people pick those, my other favorite is Climbing Up The Walls especially how it transitions into No Surprises. I do love the whole album though.
You nailed it - not boring man. In trying to turn some friends on to the band in general, while they have dozens and dozens of masterful songs this is for sure one of the very best. Anyway, on 3 occasions, for a fact, I got texted back stating something to the effect of "I was crying" followed by either thanks or like, why did you do that to me, hah? I meant no harm of course - but I feel the power and I know it is out of the couple hundred songs, all good, many great, many masterpieces, this one just has a certain weight, but as you elucidated, that weight can be freeing, thanks and peace//
There are so many sad songs out there, but after hearing this- I'd have to agree that it's definitely somewhere in my top 5 as of the moment! The passion, pain, and overall tone of this song is unlike any others. It's super unique, and the more I hear it, the more emotional I get 😅 Thank you for the comment! :)
Isn't it funny how musicians that suffer from depression create the most passionate music? It's like it takes a person to suffer to create art. Well, actually not surprising and in my own native language easier to understand, as passion means Leidenschaft, and Leid or Leiden is suffer(ing), sorrow, harm. Still native German speaker don't draw the connection often. The word 'passion' derives from the Greek word for to suffer, so it's the same thing, but most people don't speak Greek and therefor don't see the connection easily, that to be passionate means basically to suffer. ...but I started babbling again. Sorry :D What I actually wanted to say, it's sad but we are blessed at the same time that Thom Yorke is suffering from depression for so long - but he and his band made so many great songs using this sorrow as a source of inspiration and a kind of therapy in the same time. Among my favorites by this band would be Street Spirit, No Surprises and Burn The Witch. In the comment that did not get posted and was lost I mentioned another artist and added that one maybe shouldn't be in a too vulnerable state of mind when watching some of his solo videos. Steven Wilson. I didn't add a recommendation, I just listed some artists to see how much 'rock' you actually do know and if I can manage to come up with stuff you did indeed not know (yet). But when we are already at Radiohead, it's only a small step to take anyway, and beside the art of the music, some of the video clips are pure art in their very own right. So, I dare it, I suggest to react to *Steven Wilson - Routine* ua-cam.com/video/sh5mWzKlhQY/v-deo.html
Thank you, you're very right- It's unfortunate that the best art is produced from suffering. It's both a blessing for the fans, but also incredibly harrowing knowing that a lot of it is actually their mindset, and as fans, most of us can only just listen rather than provide support. Nonetheless, it's a truly beautiful song, and from some research, it seems that it is the song that Radiohead (or at least Thomas Yorke) is most proud of. I'll definitely add Steve Wilson to my list! I'll do the first song you recommended first (either today or tomorrow), and then sooner or later get to this one ^-^ Thank you as always for the support and comment!
Hello :) I plan to do it soon, as I decided to wait a few days since I only just did a reaction to Eminem by himself a couple days ago 😊 Definifely in the coming days though!
This is my favorite song of all time. Thank you. More Radiohead please. Cheers from Texas
Sure thing! I have a couple more songs on my list that I'll get too, after some other artists, and we'll see where the rabbit hole takes me :)

You're right, and I think the weight that this song holds will make it forever timeless.
YAY you finally did this song !
Haha yeah, it took me a while. But I'm so glad I did! It's a beautiful, harrowing piece of art
most sadness song ever? ... top 3 sure!

Sure thing, should probably end up as my next Radiohead reaction :)
Hi. No EZ Mil -EMINEM realest reaction yet? 😊
Hello :)
I plan to do it soon, as I decided to wait a few days since I only just did a reaction to Eminem by himself a couple days ago 😊 Definifely in the coming days though!
