If you listen to the DVD commentary for the first movie, the directors state how lots of funny inventions were cut during the original invention montage. One of the cut inventions was the "invisible coffee table" and seeing them put it in this movie instead was both hilarious and clever
The foodimals were pretty creative in this movie. I also have to point out that Chester's head and his vest (somewhat) is basically shaped like a lightbulb.
I'm sure Animat is pissed about this review, but honestly, even though I never saw the movie, aside from the side characters and humor sometimes, and predictable story, from what I saw here doesn't seem to be all that bad. It's basic, not great, but it doesn't look to be the worst thing ever like Animat claimed it was, at least, that's what I think. I think looks to be passable, I might enjoy this for the animation and the villain alone if I saw this.
While Cloudy 2 is far from the worst animated film in the world, I think even someone as (politically) problematic as AniMat has a right to his opinions.
Though the sequel did have it's plot loosely based on the book sequel, Pickles to Pittsburgh. But the only thing they have in common is the characters returning to CHEWANDSWALLOW, now covered with giant food making a whole new ecosystem, and that there were some people staying behind that plan to help transport the food to help other countries in the world.
As a zoologist, I’d love if they made a sequel that really explores this concept. Do they keep on multiplying? Do some have to be moved to the mainland? What effect would that have on the environment? Is it unethical to raise them for slaughter? Do they rot? What is their lifespan? Can they be albino?
ProfCoolio Sorry, I haven’t seen Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2. But when I read the Jurassic Park novel, several dinosaurs escaped from the island by riding on cargo ships towards the mainland because the island is overcrowded by dinosaurs so they migrate. And remember what Ian Malcolm said in the movie version, “Life cannot be contained, life breaks free. It expands to new territories and crashes through barriers painfully, maybe even dangerously, but... well there it is”. So maybe the island in this movie is small and overcrowded so the animals have to get off the island and find new territories.
I love this movie :3 no matter what people say I really love its puns and simple humor as well as imagining myself as the apex predator of that delicious looking island 😋🤤

At the time of writing this, Phil and Lord already have an Oscar under their belt thanks to Spiderverse. And say what you will about this film, at least it's not the series. Now THAT was awful. Call me a massive cynic if you want but I do like a good Google/Mac/Microsoft joke, more specifically how sterile the enviroment can come off to be. The very clean, geometric look of the baddie's company plays off well to the colorful world of Swallowfalls and Flint's mind so it worked. And oh my god, Chester. He is the perfect 'Tech' Baddie. The part where he's disgusted at Flint's heartfelt callout to his friends, just to say 'First of all, SHUT UP.' made me laugh more than I expected. There have been times where I actually wanted a baddie to just go 'Okay, just STFU.' at cheesy moments like that so yeah. SATISFYING. Barb is awesome. I really didn't think I'd take to her character but it's just her mannerism and Christine's voice that works so well with it. Plus I love her design. The Cloudy films are just so animated and their cartoony designs work to their advantage and just seeing a PURPLE ORANGUTAN with a valley-girl hairstyle in an ill-fitting orange vest won me.
I agree that the TV Series was a bad idea, but only because it evaporated all that world building in the movies, including the danger signs and consequences of overusing the FLDSMDFR.
