The pattern is standard size, the petite reference is that it has the petite modifications written on the pattern for those who need to make those kinds of modifications. The pattern itself is regular standard size otherwise. I absolutely love this pattern and the different design you've been able to make -- thanks so much for posting this video on the hoodie styles!

If you want to apply the same “make it long, then overlap” method to sleeves, tulip sleeves are you friend!!! I just made a blouse with tulip sleeves and now I’m putting them everywhere!!!

I love hearing how your brain is figuring the modifications out! If you are sewing bag pockets into a side seam, you can sew a piece of ribbon or a strip of interfacing into the side seam at the same time to prevent sagging/stretching when you put something into the pocket. I fixed a RTW dress that had this problem like that. I didn’t need all the vertical stretch since there was so much horizontal stretch.
For free patterns that are similar but not a perfect match for your fav, On the Cutting Floor "The Jeanette dress" is a raglan top but the skirt is fitted, So Sew Easy Fit and Flare Dress has the perfect skirt but has a regular scoop neck. If youre not comfortable modifying either pattern yourself, they look simple to combine because they have a nearly identical princess seam until the bust. I'll probably take the Jeanette and simply adjust the skirt because ya always need more swoosh!
Pattern and sizing info! The pattern comes in sizes 6-14, and 14-22, but do not pick your size based on what you wear in off-the-rack clothing because sewing pattern sizes are different. Choose your size based on the measurements on the pattern envelope. I've had this pattern for awhile and Charlie's videos on it were what made me want to pull it out of the stash and try it. My measurements lined up with size 16, but I cut an 18 because I was afraid of it being too tight in the bust. Let me tell you: it was HUGE. I had to take every seam in. I went down to size 14 and cut out just the top of the dress to make a shirt. In case I was wrong in the opposite direction, I didn't want to waste fabric. Size 14 fit very well, and I proceeded to make a couple of dresses in that size. I found that the neckband as given is a smidgen too long and cutting maybe half an inch off will make it lie more smoothly. Fabric! I do not recommend a near 100% rayon knit with this. Rayon is heavy and the weight of the fabric will pull the whole dress down and the stretching will make it more sheer. If you want to use something that is mostly rayon, do the shorter length or make it a shirt. Cotton/rayon/spandex blends feel buttery soft and breathable, and a thicker, cotton/poly/spandex blend gives you a dress with more body. I don't recommend poly/spandex, but that is because poly doesn't breathe well and it's hard to get armpit smell/stains out of it, not because it's unsuitable for the pattern. You don't have a fancy machine? You don't need one! You can do the whole thing with zig-zag, just do a couple of test pieces to get your tension right before starting on your dress, and have patience. If you've sewn plain-weave cotton on a machine and have zipped through it at warp speed, you can't do that with knit. Slow down and let the machine pull the fabric, don't force it. Fabric sourcing! I don't have any small fabric stores near me, it's just a quilt shop and Joann, so I got my fabrics from Joann. If you're in the same boat, I recommend signing up for coupons and sale alerts. At Joann, a lot of the adult apparel fabrics are mostly poly and I don't like that. I like a lot of the really cute patterns from the POP! fabric line that's meant for kids. Plus, they're mostly cotton. Also, check out the remnant bins. You can get fabrics super cheap and if you want to colour-block a dress, that's a great way to keep your costs down. I THINK it might be possible to use a knit bedsheet for this pattern, but I haven't tried it yet. If you want to buy online, you have a LOT more options but that is honestly a post in itself. I'll mention destashify, onlinefabric store dot com, and Mood, which does have decent prices sometimes (again, sales!) Needles! Get ball-point needles for knits. Yes, it makes a difference, just do it. Good luck and have fun!

I saw the second hoodie dress (the first one in this video) and became obsessed 😍 but the pattern doesn't come in my size and I couldn't find a similar one so I somehow created my own pattern. In a way I don't know if you can call drafting and it came out amazing. I've made two already and have the fabric for a third. I made the first one out of heavy sweatshirt minky I had laying around which is great for the cold and then I made one out of lighter knits for inside, the spring, fall, or cold ac 😂

I just googled the pattern and found at least 6 places in the uk selling it including amazon. Maybe it’s just not widely available in the US. I was tempted to buy it but I hate patterns so think I’ll try and self draft it instead, for FREEE 😂

Itch to Stitch has the Tallinn Top & Dress, which is a raglan, princess-seamed, knit dress. Sinclair Patterns has the Alana Dress, which is a princess-seamed, knit dress with set-in sleeves, but it has pockets included in the pattern. Sinclair patterns is more size-inclusive and has petite/regular/tall sizing. Itch to Stich has the option of a built-in full bust adjustment of almost 3 inches for each size.
Interesting that people find the pattern so hard to find. I just bought it 2 weeks ago, just googled for the pattern name+number, and it was available in multiple webshops, both petite and regular sizing. But I'm not in the americas, so that might be why. I bought it because I'm amazed by all you do with it, and in particular the grey with purple accents you wear for most of this video.
I have no plans or desire to make a dress like this, but if I did, this is the first video I would watch. Easy to understand, succinct, references to other videos for all the different steps… actually, maybe I do want to make this dress… I’ll put it on my ever-growing project list for next winter! I found a pdf pattern that I think will work. Plus it has bishop sleeves as an option in the pattern! Made for Mermaids Penelope Dress. No pockets though so we'd need to get creative. It goes up to a 51 inch bust!
This right here, these dresses, this is what's actually going to get me to start my sewing journey. Now I'm not gonna start with these dresses but I love them, I want them, and thus now I need to learn to sew 😂 luckily, since I flirted with this many years ago, (was even given a sewing machine for x-mas) I have just about everything, except fabric and a rotary cutter. The petite patterns will work just fine for me and they're only five dollars on the pattern website atm. 😁
love it! Would totally buy one of these - I have something similar, without the hoodie, made of fleece, that i can only wear on the coldest of days cos it is THAT warm. However... (whispers real quiet)... just thought of a 15th iteration of that dress. um. its for summer, will say that. made of lightest cotton you can find (and still be decent, i.e. not see through), huge godets, but just straps, wide neckline, no sleeves. For the hottest, hottest days. for closure, (since cotton ain't stretch) have a look at how medieval kirtles close at the side, with that corkscrew lacing. :) I think you might like that, fits with the size adjustable trend you're exploring. I have a vague memory that Izabella of Prior Attire has done it on at least one of her kirtles but could be wrong on that one - but have def seen it somewhere, might help you get started with finding it if you don't know what I'm blathering on about.

Pro tip: cut the cuffs off old socks to use as cuffs on a sleeve! super stretchy, super comfortable, not too tight, and you'd be recycling! this is my favorite way of doing sleeve cuffs. Bonus, no measuring😉

I gave in to temptation and decided to get the pattern, was able to find the larger size reasonably easily in the UK by simply searching (multiple results) Now to find fabric and time to start sewing... Thanks for the pointers in adapting this pattern

I HAD to watch this immediately because I’ve been curious about the hoods and how you drafted them! I love the way the one overlaps in the front and I love the overall shape of the three piece hood. Btw I’ve only been sewing for a couple of years but I’ve been knit fabrics for every dress I’ve made my preteen daughter and I’ve always used those regular pouch-shaped side seam pockets without any issues of them sagging or causing any issues with pulling at the outside fabric. Even when adding them to patterns that don’t come with pockets (how dare they!) it comes out fine. Also, I just got my first twin needle for my sewing machine because I’ve been preferring to work with knits and it’s a game changer!
I may well have to try this for myself! Couple of issues I’ll have to deal with: finding good fabric (JoAnnn’s selection keeps going down hill; I really must find the fabric thrift store in the area - thanks to you I know there is one!), finding the pattern and getting over my fears of working with knit fabrics. I’m a woven gal at heart. Thanks for the inspiration!
For 50 years, I thought I was a woven girl. Then I realized I was all about the knit. I suggest that you do your first knit project in a fairly stable knit that isn’t too wobbly or thin. I made a balboa skirt(itch to stitch pdf), which is as easy as anything can get, and it turned out perfectly. Don’t be afraid -it’s awesome.
I'm also a woven gal. When I start working with knits this will be one of the first things I try. I have a princess seam bodice block i made (following a few of The Closet Historian patterning tutorials) that I can attempt to modify for a raglan sleeve/neckline. I'm so excited for when I get to try this.
I was terrified of knit fabric, thought I needed buckets of specialty equipment but actually a modified stitch and ball point needle and it’s WAAAAY easier than working with woven fabric xx
For M7349 the pattern does say petite on the front but on the back it says “Misses / Miss Petite” just like yours does. I think the petite in the front just means there is a petite option. Petite just means short, not the body size, and there are also length adjustment instructions in it so you can check your measurements and adjust accordingly if needed. I hope this is helpful.
I picked up the pattern last time the McCall's/Simplicity website had a sale because the versions you make look really comfy for just being around my apartment, and maybe I'll wear one out if it turns out good enough. It only goes up to size 22, but your million variants on it prove that it's easy to adjust. Should be easy to just add extra side panels or godets to make the waist/hips bigger. The pattern doesn't specify that it's petite on the front, so it might just be a variant like some other comments have said. But I'm short, so petite would honestly be fine for me.
As a potential note to people who want to buy the pattern. I bought it recently and could also only find the petite version technically, but my packaging is the same one as shown in the video (even though the website showed 'petite' on the front of the packaging in the picture, it's not on the packaging I received). I have the E5 version (sizes 16-22) and she seems to have the version A5 (sizes 6-14). The sizing on the label are exactly the same between the one I have (and is used in the video) and the sizing on the website that shows 'petite' on the packaging. I hope that might help people?
Also, a raglan sleeve pattern that's not exactly a dress (but easily adapted to one) that I love, from a small creator is the Patterns for Pirates Slim Fit Raglan (I've made 3 of them already) and it comes with an addon pattern for hoods, collars, cuffs, pockets, etc. It's pretty well size inclusive and I love how easy the instructions are.

I’m so glad you made this video! I just bought that pattern for the default dress (and also they have them at Hobby lobby only problem is I didn’t see the price before I actually went to the cash register and they’re like $20… fortunately, it was on sale, so it was only $14 for me, but still.) and yes, size 6 appears to be the lowest that they have, which is a tiny bit annoying because that is bigger than I am unfortunately, I like things to be a bit loose but I don’t know if a princess dress would look good baggy. I don’t quite think so, but I also feel like it will be easy enough to modify or even just take a little bit after I see up the dress. But yes, I already really quite liked this dress in all the other variants you made but when you made that gray hoodie dress, I fell in love with this concept. I have already made one split side skirt. I know I will be making more of those and now I need to make a whole bunch of dresses too. (a lot with hoods lol)

I got mine last spring, through 22 not petite directly from the Simplicity website. It was a PDF download which is the only way they offered it at the time.
I got a 16-22 pattern off Amazon several months ago. I finally put together my first dress with it yesterday but it doesn't fit. I accidently cut it out while I was pregnant and now I'm 6m postpartum and it was two sizes too big. Oops, but it still makes a very comfy nightdress. I think I'll try making another summer dress with it that is the right size before I go for a hoodie dress but I can't wait to try!
I've looked into buying this pattern to start my sewing journey into knits. Haven't bought it yet though since my sice isn't included and I was contemplating how hard it would be to make in a bigger size by myself 😀

I’m definitely adding a long raglan princess seamed hoodie dress to the queue! A fourth option for the side godet pocket dilemma is to split the godet (add a center seam), which is how I snuck pockets in my old SCA gowns. 😊

I don't sew much (I do not have a sewing machine, and no inclinations to buy one right now), but I did kind of get a hoodie dress this winter... I went to a "big & tall" website and bought a hoodie that was about five (maybe six) sizes too big. It hangs on me like a dress, and is so comfy that I basically lived in it during the Polar Vortex last month. lol
I am getting closer to actually committing blade to fabric as you make your explanations so comprehensible to me that the fear of cutting wrongly is subsiding. Plus I really want these dresses!

As long as the finished object (be it garment, quilt, cushion or whatever) is sewn well who cares how you get there? One day you will feel the need for an overlocker (serger) and you will be amazed at the difference it makes. Still need a sewing machine for topstitching etc. but most knits don't even need a finishing edge as they rarely unravel. With the sheer volume of knits you sew , the serger can't be far away. Remember the difference a good iron made? Same

For those asking where to buy this, I recently bought another McCall's pattern that was labelled "petite" and what that actually meant was that the pattern was for both petite and not petite sizes (i.e. there were different lines on the pattern for petite sizes and they were labelled as such). This one could be the same? [edit, I now see that someone else has left a comment saying the same thing, hopefully people seeking information will see one of them!]
The limes are green in northern Europe too! 😄 My go-to stretch fabric dress is the Fit and Flare dress from So Sew Easy, free pattern! The last time I made a version I had a bit of a fallout with my serger (I could not for the life of me figure out the correct settings for the fabric I was using) and I had to park the unfinished dress in my closet for a few months 😅 but we're friends again and I did finish the dress eventually, even if it took a good dose of spite to get me going at first 😂

Great tip about the pockets! I haven’t added pockets to a bunch of my knit dresses because of the sagging. I’ll have to give this a try!

I just googled the pattern and found at least 6 places in the uk selling it including amazon. Maybe it’s just not widely available in the US. I was tempted to buy it but I hate patterns so think I’ll try and self draft it instead, for FREEE 😂

Itch to Stitch has the Tallinn Top & Dress, which is a raglan, princess-seamed, knit dress. Sinclair Patterns has the Alana Dress, which is a princess-seamed, knit dress with set-in sleeves, but it has pockets included in the pattern. Sinclair patterns is more size-inclusive and has petite/regular/tall sizing. Itch to Stich has the option of a built-in full bust adjustment of almost 3 inches for each size.
Interesting that people find the pattern so hard to find. I just bought it 2 weeks ago, just googled for the pattern name+number, and it was available in multiple webshops, both petite and regular sizing. But I'm not in the americas, so that might be why.
I bought it because I'm amazed by all you do with it, and in particular the grey with purple accents you wear for most of this video.
I just got it today at Joann fabrics...it's still in the store in the USA.

I have no plans or desire to make a dress like this, but if I did, this is the first video I would watch. Easy to understand, succinct, references to other videos for all the different steps… actually, maybe I do want to make this dress… I’ll put it on my ever-growing project list for next winter! Thank you for sharing your process! I can imagine it’s much more difficult in explanation and in editing trying to explain it after the fact. 😄

I found a pdf pattern that I think will work. Plus it has bishop sleeves as an option in the pattern! Made for Mermaids Penelope Dress. No pockets though so we'd need to get creative. It goes up to a 51 inch bust!
Yes! It does have set in sleeves, but I think that’s the only major difference! Love the tutorial on that pattern ❤

This right here, these dresses, this is what's actually going to get me to start my sewing journey. Now I'm not gonna start with these dresses but I love them, I want them, and thus now I need to learn to sew 😂 luckily, since I flirted with this many years ago, (was even given a sewing machine for x-mas) I have just about everything, except fabric and a rotary cutter. The petite patterns will work just fine for me and they're only five dollars on the pattern website atm. 😁
love it! Would totally buy one of these - I have something similar, without the hoodie, made of fleece, that i can only wear on the coldest of days cos it is THAT warm. However... (whispers real quiet)... just thought of a 15th iteration of that dress. um. its for summer, will say that. made of lightest cotton you can find (and still be decent, i.e. not see through), huge godets, but just straps, wide neckline, no sleeves. For the hottest, hottest days. for closure, (since cotton ain't stretch) have a look at how medieval kirtles close at the side, with that corkscrew lacing. :) I think you might like that, fits with the size adjustable trend you're exploring. I have a vague memory that Izabella of Prior Attire has done it on at least one of her kirtles but could be wrong on that one - but have def seen it somewhere, might help you get started with finding it if you don't know what I'm blathering on about.

Love love love these dresses! Also prefer shorter sleeves. Long sleeves get in the way when pushing my wheelchair. Plus, I am ALWAYS warm.
Pro tip: cut the cuffs off old socks to use as cuffs on a sleeve! super stretchy, super comfortable, not too tight, and you'd be recycling! this is my favorite way of doing sleeve cuffs. Bonus, no measuring😉

I have a dress that’s very similar to this style that I bought from Lotus Traders 10 years ago. The pleats on mine go up farther . It’s my favorite dress. They still sell the style in batik fabrics. Your version is lovely. I admire your skills. deb

I gave in to temptation and decided to get the pattern, was able to find the larger size reasonably easily in the UK by simply searching (multiple results)

I HAD to watch this immediately because I’ve been curious about the hoods and how you drafted them! I love the way the one overlaps in the front and I love the overall shape of the three piece hood. Btw I’ve only been sewing for a couple of years but I’ve been knit fabrics for every dress I’ve made my preteen daughter and I’ve always used those regular pouch-shaped side seam pockets without any issues of them sagging or causing any issues with pulling at the outside fabric. Even when adding them to patterns that don’t come with pockets (how dare they!) it comes out fine. Also, I just got my first twin needle for my sewing machine because I’ve been preferring to work with knits and it’s a game changer!
I may well have to try this for myself! Couple of issues I’ll have to deal with: finding good fabric (JoAnnn’s selection keeps going down hill; I really must find the fabric thrift store in the area - thanks to you I know there is one!), finding the pattern and getting over my fears of working with knit fabrics. I’m a woven gal at heart. Thanks for the inspiration!
For 50 years, I thought I was a woven girl. Then I realized I was all about the knit. I suggest that you do your first knit project in a fairly stable knit that isn’t too wobbly or thin. I made a balboa skirt(itch to stitch pdf), which is as easy as anything can get, and it turned out perfectly. Don’t be afraid -it’s awesome.
I'm also a woven gal. When I start working with knits this will be one of the first things I try. I have a princess seam bodice block i made (following a few of The Closet Historian patterning tutorials) that I can attempt to modify for a raglan sleeve/neckline. I'm so excited for when I get to try this.
I was terrified of knit fabric, thought I needed buckets of specialty equipment but actually a modified stitch and ball point needle and it’s WAAAAY easier than working with woven fabric xx

I went to Joann's and bought the pattern today. I need a cozy hoodie dress.
For M7349 the pattern does say petite on the front but on the back it says “Misses / Miss Petite” just like yours does. I think the petite in the front just means there is a petite option. Petite just means short, not the body size, and there are also length adjustment instructions in it so you can check your measurements and adjust accordingly if needed. I hope this is helpful.
Just got the pattern. It's still in the store. Joann's still has it.
I picked up the pattern last time the McCall's/Simplicity website had a sale because the versions you make look really comfy for just being around my apartment, and maybe I'll wear one out if it turns out good enough. It only goes up to size 22, but your million variants on it prove that it's easy to adjust. Should be easy to just add extra side panels or godets to make the waist/hips bigger.
The pattern doesn't specify that it's petite on the front, so it might just be a variant like some other comments have said. But I'm short, so petite would honestly be fine for me.

As a potential note to people who want to buy the pattern. I bought it recently and could also only find the petite version technically, but my packaging is the same one as shown in the video (even though the website showed 'petite' on the front of the packaging in the picture, it's not on the packaging I received). I have the E5 version (sizes 16-22) and she seems to have the version A5 (sizes 6-14). The sizing on the label are exactly the same between the one I have (and is used in the video) and the sizing on the website that shows 'petite' on the packaging.

Also, a raglan sleeve pattern that's not exactly a dress (but easily adapted to one) that I love, from a small creator is the Patterns for Pirates Slim Fit Raglan (I've made 3 of them already) and it comes with an addon pattern for hoods, collars, cuffs, pockets, etc. It's pretty well size inclusive and I love how easy the instructions are.

I’m so glad you made this video! I just bought that pattern for the default dress (and also they have them at Hobby lobby only problem is I didn’t see the price before I actually went to the cash register and they’re like $20… fortunately, it was on sale, so it was only $14 for me, but still.) and yes, size 6 appears to be the lowest that they have, which is a tiny bit annoying because that is bigger than I am unfortunately, I like things to be a bit loose but I don’t know if a princess dress would look good baggy. I don’t quite think so, but I also feel like it will be easy enough to modify or even just take a little bit after I see up the dress. But yes, I already really quite liked this dress in all the other variants you made but when you made that gray hoodie dress, I fell in love with this concept. I have already made one split side skirt. I know I will be making more of those and now I need to make a whole bunch of dresses too. (a lot with hoods lol)

I got mine last spring, through 22 not petite directly from the Simplicity website. It was a PDF download which is the only way they offered it at the time.

I got a 16-22 pattern off Amazon several months ago. I finally put together my first dress with it yesterday but it doesn't fit. I accidently cut it out while I was pregnant and now I'm 6m postpartum and it was two sizes too big. Oops, but it still makes a very comfy nightdress. I think I'll try making another summer dress with it that is the right size before I go for a hoodie dress but I can't wait to try!

I’m definitely adding a long raglan princess seamed hoodie dress to the queue! A fourth option for the side godet pocket dilemma is to split the godet (add a center seam), which is how I snuck pockets in my old SCA gowns. 😊

I don't sew much (I do not have a sewing machine, and no inclinations to buy one right now), but I did kind of get a hoodie dress this winter... I went to a "big & tall" website and bought a hoodie that was about five (maybe six) sizes too big. It hangs on me like a dress, and is so comfy that I basically lived in it during the Polar Vortex last month. lol
I am getting closer to actually committing blade to fabric as you make your explanations so comprehensible to me that the fear of cutting wrongly is subsiding. Plus I really want these dresses!

As long as the finished object (be it garment, quilt, cushion or whatever) is sewn well who cares how you get there? One day you will feel the need for an overlocker (serger) and you will be amazed at the difference it makes. Still need a sewing machine for topstitching etc. but most knits don't even need a finishing edge as they rarely unravel. With the sheer volume of knits you sew , the serger can't be far away. Remember the difference a good iron made? Same

For those asking where to buy this, I recently bought another McCall's pattern that was labelled "petite" and what that actually meant was that the pattern was for both petite and not petite sizes (i.e. there were different lines on the pattern for petite sizes and they were labelled as such). This one could be the same?

My go-to stretch fabric dress is the Fit and Flare dress from So Sew Easy, free pattern! The last time I made a version I had a bit of a fallout with my serger (I could not for the life of me figure out the correct settings for the fabric I was using) and I had to park the unfinished dress in my closet for a few months 😅 but we're friends again and I did finish the dress eventually, even if it took a good dose of spite to get me going at first 😂
