Hi Sofia, I found great shelf liners at Ikea. Target and Walmart have them also. The liner is a plastic and removable which you can wipe clean. They are a clear plastic and easy to find in the kitchen department. Also, I purchased one specifically made to go under the kitchen sink (at Target), it's grey and will be labeled as such. Putting away dishes is easy because the liner doesn't move, unlike the Dollar Tree ones. It will protect your cabinets. Hope this helps.

Dollar Tree placemats work well... Shelf liner is probably cheaper, but I got the placemats for the fridge. Also, tool chest liner works great, too. I stumbled on that gem by accident.

You definitely have inspired me to declutter. I’ve been going through my closets and dresser drawers, and I keep hearing your voice say, “I can let that go.” I listened to that voice, and just took five boxes of stuff to Goodwill. It’s a great feeling to get rid of things I know that I’ll never use again. Thank you for your inspiring videos!!! I look forward to watching more of your videos!!!

I have a small kitchen and bought a clear acrylic turntable with no dividers that has a couple inch height around edges for all my oils and sprays so they don't fall when I turn it. I keep that above my stove. In the cabinet next to my stove I got the turntables with the rubber bottom with no dividers for my spices. I have 3 turntables for all my spices where I can see them with only a couple things in the center. I never have to pull out the turntable as I can see everything I have. I also have my most used on the lowest shelf and the others are separated by type like Mexican seasonings, Italian, seafood, etc. For the baking items like baking powder, cinnamon, vanilla, etc I put in a separate acrylic tote that I can pull out. I keep all my bigger items up on the top shelf next to the pull-out acrylic totes. They all keep me organized and I love it.

Thank you for keeping it real! I now have my spices mounted in racks on walls next to my stove but I used to have some racks that attached to the inside of cabinet doors. It was easy to see what I had in smaller bottles that way. The bigger bottles went on the shelf on a lazy Susan.

I have to have mine on a hanging wire rack on the back of my pantry door. I have no cabinet space but the rack works well as I can see everything and they are eye level. 4x a year is how often I do my baking/cooking shelves. So every season. I have a 3 level stand and 1 lazy Susan for my spices and herbs. Then the other 2 shelves have clear containers. One has cookie cutters, one has my Kitchenaid Stand Mixer attachments, another has baking items, and the last one has my hand mixer, immersion blender, potato masher. I check for spills and loose herbs and what not every time I open the cabinet for quick clean up.

My son is a supermarket manager and I asked him and his girlfriend to clean out my pantry (including my spices etc) when we were packing up ready for our kitchen renovations. I knew they would be much more ruthless than I would and get rid of all of the dried herbs and spices that were past due (because I just keep using them knowing they’ve probably just lost some flavour). I don’t know exactly what I have left, but I guess I can do a stock take when we unpack, restocking things as we need them. I have new pull out drawers in my pantry so nothing gets lost at the back and I end up doubling up when I can’t find things.

For the doubles with different expiration dates, if you stock one on a top shelf, may I suggest getting a simple sheet of paper and writing what you have already and stick it on the back of the door. When you do reach for that jar, cross it off your list so you know that you will need to repurchase 😊

    • @patkern185
      @patkern185 Рік тому +2

May I add to this helpful suggestion that the list be broken down by each shelf and items listed in alphabetical order because you can only see the front spices in your carousel and the taller bottles but not what's behind the front row. At least with the list, you would know what container and which shelf to find and replace your items. Attach a pen or pencil on a string to keep your list current.

I have a spice cabinet also. It is a challenge to keep organized. The door has shelves for spice jars, but it is not enough to contain everything. Containers help corralling everything. Most of my spices and herbs come from the local food coop in small plastic bags, so I sort them into the containers by category.
I put plastic lid under my honey. I don’t know why the honey always find it’s way down the side of the jar, but it does!
My spice cabinet is not suitable for a magazine spread, but I can find what I am looking for!

I am a new subscriber. Love your sense of humour and the fact that you rarely seem to overthink the process. I need to re organize my spice cabinet as well! I use the long, narrow shallow baskets you find at Dollar Tree for the small bottles of spices. I have 3 times the spices you have, I laughed out loud when you said you had so many!! I also almost never purchase large bottles of anything, chopped onions, and granulated garlic perhaps. I label my baskets w tape on the front... as in Italian spices, and Mexican spices, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, etc. (I cook from scratch most days) That way I can just slide out the bin of 5 or 6 bottles and choose the ones I need. I also use wire shelves to stack the baskets and bins to double my cabinet space. The bottles are always the challenge!! Looking forward to see how you handle things like holiday decor and other miscellaneous. We all have such different sized spaces to deal with!

If you wanted an easily removable liner, I bought some silicone liners for my oven, came in a 4 pack, I cut 1 down for the toaster oven, but I bet the other 2 would work well in cabinets. Pack of 4 was only 12 dollars.
That said, I did my spices for the first time 2 years ago. I got rid of the out of date stuff. If it wasn't used in the allotted time frame, I probably wasn't using it enough to stock (and in reality, some had been inherited from my Grandmother and Parents as they passed, and very few that I had saved had I ever used). That cleared a huge amount of space. Like one entire side of the double cabinets above the stove. I put some baking pans there, and saved some "matching" jars for future to upgrade plastic containers. My glass really don't match, but they are glass. Over time I have started buying spices from Azure standard or in deli type containers from a local Amish grocery. I have a "backstock" area in a different cabinet (would be like your top shelf I expect). My goal right now is to get to the point I have all glass containers that have labels and to have a year of backstock. That is a bit of a moving target since I'm cooking and making more these days, but I've worked through duplicates in the last year and pretty soon all of the spices will fit in the little spice area under the cabinet (in use, not backstock).

I do have a bin of spice backups in large containers high up in my pantry. I probably have one hundred different spices! Regarding baskets for your spices (or anywhere else). I have found that if you trim the edges back on the baskets, you can make them fit into your spaces and be able to get them out easier. Fortunately, my partner is a whizz with a grinder so he does that for me. Some plastics you can cut with a craft knife, others are too thick. Perhaps a dremel tool? I get really frustrated when it's just millimetres too tight!

10:56 When you poured the boiling water, you can literally see the ring of syrup disappear. How satisfying! lol :)
EDIT: I raced to write this comment before I continued to watch, but then I saw the next clip of the paper towel coming unglued from the boiling water.... EXTRA SATISFYING! lol :)

    Hi Sophia
I keep alot of the bottles in my fridge. Most things like that say refrigerate after opening. Well here in Canada anyway.

Many of my bottles are in the fridge also for the same reason.

Mine too. I also buy Mexican vanilla, it lasts forever, and goes in the fridge. It is also very strong so I only use 1/4 of what the recipe calls for. Wocestershire also goes in the fridge.

Oh my......so this is what I do. All the spices and herbs go in the same jars. All are clearly labeled. All go in racks screwed to the pantry wall ,one above the other. I could see your set up as done like this.....a shelf screwed to the door so the door shuts. More little shelves to the walls with turntable for the tall bottles. I arranged mine so that what I cook together are on the same shelf. I have a need to keep my kitchen tidy , only because it takes too long looking for things. I've had a leg injury and can't spend too long standing in one place. That was the necessity to find a system that works. I sincerely hope you find something that works for you. Enjoy your chanel and love how you explain the process. Take care and blessings on you and your family. Xx

The tall bottles go up high in the plastic magazine boxes so I can pull out a whole group to get what I want

Try using up your whole coriander seeds making a rub for pork steaks or chops. Grind them not too finely in a pestle and mortar and add a little oil to make a paste. You can add some other herbs if you like - I think the recipe I used had something else but I can’t remember what! Ideally let them sit marinating for a while before you cook them.

I think sesame oil is supposed to be in the fridge, or it will go rancid. Had that happen one time.

I'm cleaning my spice shelf's at least once per month.. most of the time it's two times per month.. we are using spices at least once per day so that means it's always a mess especially when someone other than myself is cooking in my kitchen

I would maybe put olive oil bottles etc on bottom since they are so heavy but no basket. Spices in basket at top would be easier to get down since they are lighter.

Thank you so much for inviting us into your kitchen. Wow, I didn't know that baking powder can expire. So glad you told us. The other day you inspired me to tackle my tea stash. Soon I will also tackle my spices. Kitchen designs are obviously not designed by people who cook. It is so challenging to utilize the right cabinet, preferably the one next to stove, which in my case is so narrow and not very deep, but filled to the brim. Have a great day.

Instead of the bottles being dangerously high and heavy like that could they not go in the bottom shelf of the matching cupboard on the other side of the microwave. And then something lighter or less used on that top shelf? You don't need to injure yourself getting that heavy basket down. Then your spices and oil and sauces are all within reach on both sides of the stove. You've inspired me to go thru my spice cabinet

at least four times a year we pull out all the spices and clean. we keep our oils seperated from the rest of the spices and herbs because our heart cupboard doesn't fit the oils and vinegars.

Can you move your shelves lower? If you could then if you have the bottles on top it won’t be so high..it will be heavy and risk falling on you. I noticed because you had the bottles on the first shelve if you could drop shelves that would allow some room without bottles on bottom.

I like to use Dollar Tree plastic place mats (cut to size) as shelf liners. More expensive but washable and heavier than most plastic shelf liner.

i too thought decanting was too frufru for me to ever use but then i found a system that works for keeping my spices organized and those large jars did not work anymore, i had to decant to fit my spices into the drawers next to my stove. if your husband likes those little baggies of spices perhaps decanting those large jars so you can fit them into a second carousel would allow your husband a place to put those little baggies where the spillage will be contaied. you would even have enough space to allow him to buy a few bottles to decant those baggies into.

hi Sofia i used to have the same problem with the spices. I solved it by not buying bulk spices. i only buy the small bottles and once one is done i replace it for a new one. the bulk spices used to take so much space and by the time you get to half the container they are old. Also like you everything got lost in mi cabinets so i used to get doubles. I'm lazy, so a basket helped a lot. I keep my oils, vinagers and sauces in a baskets o if they leak i only have to rinse the basket.

Hi Sofia, my husband and I are renters and live in California. We have moved a LOT! We have had the same shelf liners since 2010 and have moved twice since then. We have been able to take our shelf liners with us. Sometimes we have to cut them to fit, or use two together in somewhere that doesn't get a lot of activity, but we love them. I got the first set at Bed Bath and Beyond and then found them at Costco when we moved and had more cabinets to line. They are really great and don't melt into the cabinets - at least in my experience. They are called Con-Tact Ribbed Clear Premium Shelf Liner. I feel they are reasonably priced.
