For someone who wants to make pro-level talking head videos without necessarily having human camera operators constantly active, this camera does deliver. The BGH1 autofocus won't lose a face in many realistic situations, but it does still hunt just enough to be annoying with background bokeh balls or lights visibly pulsing. Great video! The AF test was fun to watch. I love my bs1h & I just ordered a bgh1. Tired of rigging mirrorless cameras and I hope this bgh1 holds up to my bs1h or close to
I hope us GH5S users get one final update for that new VlogL profile, I always thought it had more dynamic range and was limited by the old vlogL profile and this confirms it. Hopefully they will as I feel like we haven’t had nearly as many updates as previous cameras on the GH5S
The fact that this thing shoots Pro Res raw now makes this a very intriguing camera. I kind of wish they could do the same thing for my GH5S, but I'm guessing the innards of the BGH1 are a little different. Even if they could do this Panasonic most likely would not want to cannibalize the BHGH1. Anyways, the the fact that this is MFT and uses cheaper lenses than what is currently available for the L-Mount is pretty awesome. It also makes me very curious about what the GH6 will look like.
True... the latest firmware update and Lumix Tether software adds a lot to be excited about... especially the RAW output. Amazing for the size. When Lumix were talking about the firmware they were stressing the support for MFT going forwards... so I'm still hopeful there will be a GH6 at some point. I hope so anyway, because I still love my old GH5.
Coming to this a bit late ... Towards the end you mused about a BS1H ... I watched one of the Panasonic launch discussions, and the question was raised about the sensor size, and one of the Panasonic-affiliated folk said that they really wanted to make it possible to put 2 cameras right next to each other for 3D video, which ruled out both the 35mm sensor, and internal ND's - if you wanted to retain the square front profile. I wish I could remember *which* video/discussion for you; it probably did wind up on youTube somewhere.
That's a good point... I also seem to remember one of the Panasonic guys talking about 3D as well. I thought that fad was over for another 60 years but maybe it's coming back. The square sided Sony F5/55 was shaped for the same reason.
I'm impressed at how small this camera looks in your hands. I had been considering getting a hybrid for traveling, but maybe this and a stills camera together would be small enough to take 2 different cameras. The form factor presents some interesting possibilities.
Hi Alan, The box is just 93.0 x 93.0 x 78.0 mm, but this excludes the standard VBR battery which sticks out a bit at the back. It's 545g but of course you would also need a monitor to travel with it. I thought the whole joy of the hybrid was you only need to take one camera?
3:32 I'm sure they switched to a 12 bit ADC video readout mode - which Blackmagic does as well using the same sensor with the Pocket 4K (IMX294/299). The bigger body and active cooling made it possible. :) What's also great is that the horrible sharpening in V-Log L seems to be gone. Video footage I've seen so far looks as smooth as from the S1H even.
4:17 V-Log L is much smoother on the BGH1 than on the GH5s - as shown in the Dpreview review. And it's showing here as well. The CinelikeD result is quite harsh in comparison.
Hi Dennis, All the info I have point to it being the same video readout as the GH5S? Why do you think it's different? V Log L is definitely improved and certainly looks better in the highlights. Cinelike D2/V2 have also been tweaked but I'm struggling to see the difference... but then I liked and used D2 before if I needed to deliver usable pictures.
Steady on.... it looked like you were ploughing your way through an imaginary rugby team the way you were legging it around ! :) My initial thoughts on this camera were that it is impractical for most use cases (no EVF, no screen, no IBIS, and not even a battery included), poor value for money and not in the least bit interesting to most of us. But you make some great points, and I can now see some events venues installing a number of these ready to be controlled as you describe. It could be a genius move.
That was pretty much my take on this camera as well. I ended up liking it more than I thought I would! Even though I don't personally have a use for this right now, I think the potential is huge, especially with them releasing the SDK. I can see this being a popular camera in multi camera rigs and fixed venues.
As a MFT shooter this camera interests me, and as someone who shoots in Africa and the Caribbean, out of all the MFT cinema cameras I’d trust Panasonic over the others any day of the week!

It physically looks horrendous... but hasn't missed a beat and still records great 4K pictures all without the love it deserves! Solid is the word!
@@extrashot I used the GH5 with the 40-150 to break my fall while filming in Gambia. The battery grip and VND filter were the only things that showed any sign of damage. That was May 2018 and it’s still going strong.

@@extrashot One question and then I'll leave you alone. How do you rate the BGH1's image compared to the BMPC4K? Oh and you've earned a new subscriber!
@@candyartstv I suspect they use the same sensor, so in theory they should look quite similar? With regard to the colour science, I like both the BM and Panasonic way of doing things. If we're only talking picture quality, and nothing else, then I think I prefer the BM for ultimate cinematic quality... but it's a very subtile difference and obviously a subjective choice. BM obviously have the advantage of BRAW, which, if you're okay with Resolve, is a very efficient and usable version of RAW. I've heard of lot of people moaning about it not being 'proper RAW' because some of the demosaicing is done in camera... but I think it's a very impressive solution. The in-camera ProRes codecs are also useful for any jobs where you need a fast turnaround/edit. For the way they handle highlights and over exposure clipping the BM wins for me... but then, for working in low light the Panasonic looks cleaner in the shadows! And the plot thickens for cinema quality box cameras. You did not mention Red Komodo but it’s totally in another price range. Also, which 10 but 422 codec does it record? Great review and as almost always watched through to the end.

Also, I've been waiting very patiently to pull the trigger on what I hope to be my next A cam to my GH5 (b cam). I'm romantic about staying with panasonic and vlog but I really wanted a little more depth and color, perhaps closer to the varicam. As a matter of fact, I would love to buy a varicam. I am doing my best to hold off a little longer...
Pooh Bear... that's a first! 😂. I know what you mean about the Panasonic colours... they do have some secret sauce! The Vlog in the GH5 is a "lite" version of the full fat Vlog you get in the Varicam's, although I believe the S1H and S5 have the full version as well. I'm still holding out for a GH6 although the great value S5 is making that difficult.
@@extrashot Agreed. Everyone is in love with the box form factor and so the BGH1 and Komodo are making it hard for me to hold out as well. I admire the color science in the S5 - people are putting together some amazing footage with it. This may sound totally backwards but, I'm starting to feel like it's not all the specs on paper that I am looking for (dynamic range, 14 bits etc.), rather, I believe I want more information out of my sensor. There is something in large form factor cameras like Varicam or the old Cinealta F35 that simple allows you to get more... I can't say what, I just know the footage is more, the information is more.
I got a GH5 and GH5s and I feel thats more than enough for me to do what I need to do and then come the BGH1... having to ability to record in ProResRaw and 13 stop dynamic range? A GH5s on light steroids..Ah dammit now I want one. Lol
Hi Paul - your videos are criminally under-viewed! I am a GH5 owner and love the camera, but I am contemplating the next step. As a one-man band autofocus would be a big help, and I am keen to get a bit more bokeh in my life with a bigger sensor. While I take a few stills, I am primarily video, so I am leaning towards a cinema camera. The wrestling match in my head is a) the Canon C70, b) the Sony A7SIII or c) the upcoming Sony FX6. I love simplicity, which is why the C70 is in my sights even though it’s not full frame and the cost of RF lenses kilos a part of my brain every time I look at them. There is a question in all this: as a salty, steely-eyed veteran camera man, what tips would you give me, what things should I consider? Thanks for taking the time to read what is increasingly feeling like a small novel!
Bigger sensor, more toneh, with great autofocus? You've listed three great contenders... C70, A7Siii or maybe FX6? I would have included the Lumix S5 or S1H if AF wasn't such a priority for you. Thing is... choosing a camera is as much about choosing the lens options you want to use (or can afford), so I'd also carefully look at the total cost of ownership. If you're shooting video seriously, more batteries, extra cards and all those support options can also become a major cost consideration. Native lenses will give better AF than anything used with an adaptor, so I'd probably try to list my three dream (but available) lenses with each camera... just to see what the total cost of your ideal setup would be. It's often weird how the most expensive body can end up being the cheaper camera to use! Having just switched most of my lenses from one system to another... I know you don't want to do that very often. Would you use the camera for any stills at all? The FX6 specs aren't out yet, but I don't think it'll do stills...
Hi Scott, I am in the same boat, looking to beef up the quality as a one man band. When you are looking for a bigger sensor, don't forget that you would have to drag around way bigger and heavier lenses if you go full frame. (Unless you are a one man band with one or two invisible assistants who just carry your stuff, of course). I have learned to embrace the MFT system for exactly that reason: I can get a full shooting system in a Peli Cabin case (2 GH5 cams, 7-14 2.8 Oly Pro, 12-35 and 35-100 Panasonic 2.8 zooms, and for the beauty shots, 25 and 42.5 1.8 primes, which give me just enough shallow DoF, SmallHD-Monitor, two Sennheiser wireless mics, and the trusty XLR adapter.) Tripod and lights go into a second case that I have to check in. The small size and weight of this system have been so important to me that I have learned to work around the one obvious deficit - poor AF. I have set my 2 GH5 cams to back button push focus (many tutorials on YT on this) and this works for me most of the time: have the cam in MF, get a super fast ballpark focus with back button push, then fine tune manually. At first this felt like a compromise, after a couple of years I actually feel it is superior to have the focus locked down, whenever I need a focus change that I don't feel I can pull manually I just push the back focus button. The rack focus will not be usable, but you can cut back into the picture really quickly, and by now I prefer that the focus never moves when I don't intend it to. Hope this helps.
@@nauticfilms thanks for this thoughtful response! I will definitely check out back button push focussing. Having said that, after checking your channel I think I want to sell my camera gear and buy a boat!
I know what you mean... but I'm convinced this is a different tool with different uses in mind. I'm still hoping for a GH6 (but then I am an optimist) 😂
Love your video review production values: music, lighting etc, but I feel this is alousy attempt from Panasonic to copy other competitiors like the ZCam range like you mentioned. Terrible name, BGH1. GH5/GH5s want the GH6, not this. I think the only thing that is useful about the BGH1 is using it as a webcam, but then I do this currently with my GH5.
Thanks Shark... I'm not sure if the aim was to compete with other box cams (ZCam etc)... or is it all about form factor, remote working. conference videos etc???
@@extrashot because is not GH6... is just more plastic doing the same thing of a GH5s... but without a screen... and sure it will cost over 2000 dollars... plus a screen, plus a new rig, plus huge batteries, etc... I mean yes maybe is for a different user but why no a GH6 ?

@@JacobCenteno Agreed - there's always a little something that totals more than the specs tell us !!!
I got a GH5 and GH5s and I feel thats more than enough for me to do what I need to do and then come the BGH1... having to ability to record in ProResRaw and 13 stop dynamic range? A GH5s on light steroids..Ah dammit now I want one. Lol
True... but then you know, if you jump now, the GH6 will turn up two days later !!! 😂
@@extrashot totally lol! But only if I could find out for sure that the GH6 would support ProResRaw ..then I would wait.
@@extrashot thanks for taking the time for the considered response Paul. Very helpful. And thanks again for the excellent content.
@@nauticfilms Love your channel Gerrit... great content.
A small flip out screen, locking mft mount and 12g sdi would have sealed the deal. Unfortunately.... 3 missed opportunities 😕
I know what you mean... but I'm convinced this is a different tool with different uses in mind. I'm still hoping for a GH6 (but then I am an optimist) 😂
Are you looking for the Perfect Camera? Actually wearing his T-shirt right now!
@@rudolfabelin383 I'm a huge fan.... but I don't think it exists. It's like the 'Man in a White Suit', if it was made it would kill all sales !!! 😂
@@extrashot LOL! I had to Google the film. It wont happen in my lifetime...
Masterpiece
Was expecting this from BMD, in 6k. Still think its in the making...
The form factor would be a definite improvement for BMD... if they added a flexible touch screen!
Netflix approved camera
True... that's a big thing for such a small camera!
There will be no GH6. Panasonic is moving in a different direction. I think this is going to be better than DSLR type cameras.
Really?... I was hoping, but then I've always been an optimist!
@@extrashot 43 rumors says it'll happen eventually
@@AlexanderHaibel I think it will too!

A Panasonic with good autofocus? Shocking!
Well.... it's all relative!
Everybody keeps comparing it to this unicorn ZedCam. I can’t find any company called ZedCam.
It’s called Z CAM.
doesnt come with a monitor or batteries...it may cost less, but it must be seriously rigged out...still great footage though!
How much to get it recording ?
Love your video review production values: music, lighting etc, but I feel this is alousy attempt from Panasonic to copy other competitiors like the ZCam range like you mentioned. Terrible name, BGH1. GH5/GH5s want the GH6, not this. I think the only thing that is useful about the BGH1 is using it as a webcam, but then I do this currently with my GH5.
Thanks Shark... I'm not sure if the aim was to compete with other box cams (ZCam etc)... or is it all about form factor, remote working. conference videos etc???
@@extrashot, Possiby, I mean its nice you can use it for a webcam for video conferencing.
worst move of panasonic 👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎
Why?... looks like a clever move for some users?
@@extrashot because is not GH6... is just more plastic doing the same thing of a GH5s... but without a screen... and sure it will cost over 2000 dollars... plus a screen, plus a new rig, plus huge batteries, etc... I mean yes maybe is for a different user but why no a GH6 ?
@@CorvusWolf I don't think it needs to be a choice of this or a GH6... why not have both? I don't know anything, but I'm still convinced Panasonic are committed to supporting MFT. Maybe I'm just too optimistic!
