Great discussion, so interesting. And from what I've heard of the Caveman BP1 Compact, it's absolutely great sounding.

I tend to be pretty skeptical of "nice" gear, because, whether whether the thing in question happens to be 'custom shop', or 'limited edition', or 'hand-wired', the exorbitant prices asked seem to have a lot more to do with hype/branding/scarcity/investment speculation/bragging rights etc. than with actually improving your experience as a player in any kind of meaningful way. But man, the BP1 Compact is the real deal. Just used it in a live setting for the first time last week and it was immediately apparent to everyone in soundcheck (including the monitor and FOH techs) that the bass just sounded better. So much punch, so much clarity, so much saturation. It does add a significant amount of low end which I found I needed to tame a little with an EQ, but it's otherwise the holy grail of bass tone I've been looking for. So refreshing to hear such a stark improvement after having had fairly disappointing experiences with other preamps. Can't recommend enough.

I’ve tried the preamp and it’s nice. But for the price I’ll stick with my Ampeg SCR DI. I’ve used this on tour with The Miracles and it’s a great unit that sounds to me every bit as good as any boutique unit at 2 or 3x the price. . Most of these boutique products are overpriced for the actual audio advantages they give you. Sure they’re good. But in the end a good player is going to sound good because he or she is a good player. And if you do a lot of studio work as I have done over the last 45 years, the sound engineer is going to tweak “your sound” to make it work in the mix. Bass players are notorious for hearing differences that aren’t there or don’t matter, and obsessing over their sound where literally nobody can tell the difference. But once they go down this rabbit hole it’s hard to drag them out of it. Spend more time becoming an accomplished player.
