How to IMPROVE lightningbending

- I just thought of something that lightning benders should do against those who can redirect lightning, but don’t.
Feints and intentional misses. Just like in boxing or Mixed Martial Arts.
Let me explain…

Considering lightning redirection was a fairly new technique not widely known, and lightning itself was rare (only those of the royal line in ATLA) it only makes sense they didn't have any counter play for it. Each time it happens to them it's a surprise.
Except for Azula. The second time she's about to get her lightning redirected she shoots at Katara to throw off Zuko's timing. And she almost won the whole fight for it.
In the defense of Ozai and Azula they were not familiar that lightning could be redirected it was a technique developed by Iroh long after his time in the military and the only people that knew it other than him was Zuko and Aang.
I think the reason why lightning "benders" don't feint with their ability, is because you cannot bend lightning to your will. When Zuko did that it blew up in his face. Literally.
Worth to mention, Azula can redirect lightning too. She does it in the comics. And she learned just by observing Zuko doing it.
Yep: ua-cam.com/video/-B806b6TgwQ/v-deo.html
Yep, Azula shot lightning at Zuko, Zuko redirected it back to her & she redirected it back to Zuko, to his surprise.
@@huntermach7356 One of my favorite moments from S&S for sure
Keep in mind lightning redirection was a littke known technique in avatar. Idk how widely know it was in korra but in atla it eas invented by iroh, and before he taught zuko i think only he knew how to do it
I may not watch every video you put out, but I always love your content. And when I heard you were reviving the VS series, I audibly said "Yes!" and did a fist pump. Your lore stuff is great, and I love checking things out as I haven't gone on a super deep dive into all things Avatar yet, but I absolutely _loved_ your VS series. So super glad to see it coming back!
I kind of wish they had left lightningbending to the royal family before they changed it in korra
I don’t I think it adds to the world building I never understood why people got so upset seeing so much lightening bending.
Seeing as Lightning has become a source of electricity, which is important in an industrialized world, lighting would become more crucial. And since the Royal family wouldn’t want to do it, they would allow lightning vending to be taught outside of the elites, and this form of lightning it probably still weaker then the one the elites use.
This wouldn’t even make sense story wise the whole point of Zuko’s character is to bring change to the way the fire nation ruled
@@Andrea-rc1gz because now bending is free and now everyone can do it.
It makes people like zuko Azula and Iroh seem like horrible characters.
There's no reason to have people like Ty Lee if everyone can bend elements.
@@-Alpeterno way more people doing lightening bending can make other characters look terrible 😭 it actually makes Zuko look like a better leader by allowing the fire bender learn more abilities. I also think it helps level out the elements since water and earth bending had so many new abilities. And the destruction of wind bending was shown to be really op in the wrong hands. Hopefully we came see more creative abilities now that there are more lightening benders in the avatar world.
Well the problem is, most of the lightning users in the shows have never seen lightning redirection so the redirection was the novelty for them. i imagine that we might see something like this in the future.
A shame creators of third avatar show will either never see this video or ignore your advices entirely 😢
Azula learning lightning bending almost instantly makes alought more sense when you think about it, Iroh invented by studying water benders who can’t shoot lightning meaning it’s more of an understanding then something he’d have to practice, she’s witnessed Iroh do it to her and couldn’t learn it from him because she didn’t understand what he did, she learnt Zuko could do it to probably from Ozai telling her and she Witnessed zuko do an improper redirection we’re some of it hit his heart, so she understood what to avoid through zuko and seemingly what doing it properly looks like from Iroh, she came to the conclusion to simply absorb it without letting it touch her heart, it was still a leap and a guess on if that’s how it worked but she’d probably rather take that risk and assume she understood it instead of letting the lightning hit her.
Remember. When they generate lightning they do not command it. They can only guide it. The lightning goes wherever it flows. They just point in a desired direction
It's not as easy as you make it out to be.
Gazan vs king Bumi
The one "feinting" is the lighning redirecter, since every time it's been used it was a surprise, except for that one time Zuko revealed his hand to Azula in the final agni kai. We all know what happened then. Can't speak about Mako as I haven't watched Korra though.
Redirecting isn’t feinting though. That’s a straight up counter. In fencing, that’d be a riposte.
@@AntoineBandele Granted she wasn't thinking straight but imagine Zuko's surprise if Azula shot flames at him while he was redirecting lightning, boy would've been well cooked. It's mostly the, ahem...shock factor that takes them by surprise.
As much as people complain about lightning bending being more common its usage hasn’t nearly advanced in versatility the way metal-bending did.
Fair point...but how could it? It's not a malleable element like metal is. It's an intense burst of power in a very short amount of time. They had people lightning bending in a powerplant, but you're not really going to get much more out of it than that.
@@enderlionheart4497 I would have like to see it on a smaller scale like instead of grandiose charged bolts just quick stunning (kinda like the equalist glove), or even to power or short electrical devices. But even on the grand scale multiple skilled lightning bender would have been helpful when fighting the mechs, I could even imagine lightning benders working together to make an EMP (like Varrick did). I just feel there’s still room for the skill to grow.
@@enderlionheart4497 Actually, Lightningbending has a lot more potential than your giving it credit for. It has the potential to used by all 5 fingers than just 2. It could be forced out through the palms. It can (in theory) be used in Lightning kicks. And even used out the mouth.
@@keonhazel2799 Sure, I totally get that and that all truly sounds great and cool! And some of that is certainly a bit of versatility added. But it's still hard to use lightning as a shield, as a grappling hook, just as a utility or a defensive measure. Don't get me wrong, lightning is one of my absolute favorite elements and I would love to see it used WAY more...but it unfortunately is a very straightforward element since it's a burst of pure energy.
@@joesunday199 OK, cool. But those are all combat purposes. And strictly offensive purposes at that. I never said it could only be used out of 2 fingers, though I would say that's probably the most common as in theory it concentrates the energy to a much smaller point. I agree, it can be _used_ many different ways, but in how many ways is it truly _useful_ outside of a harmful aspect? Sure there are some, overloading the mechs, powering a powerplant, shorting fuses/doors/locks/etc., stunning people, but what past that is lightning _useful_ for?
This is honestly a very interesting take. Bending seems very comparable to sword fighting when you look at it. Let me explain.
Tactics just aren't important if someone can overpower you easily. Knuckle to knuckle, even some of the best martial artists would get destroyed by a gorilla. Same logic for street fights when weapons aren't involved. If someone can easily over power you, all the plans you make won't matter if you can't execute them
But that changes when two fighters are of compatible outputs. That's when the deciding factor is skill and tactics.
In sword fighting, there's less margin for error, so being faster and more skilled is more important than brute force. The same is true for competitive sports where they are regulated by weight classes.
I'm not trying to say avatar fights are "fight harder not smarter." Because most benders, and even some non benders, are able to keep up with one another.
In my humble opinion I think Lightning bending needs to be buffed 😂 in real life a shock of lightning is pretty much an insta kill and although that won’t be possible in avatar it should have way faster travel time and in most occasions do a lot of damage.
The idea I gathered from it is that weak charges of lightning generation just give opponents and shock. While charged lightning kills.
Okay, got few comments about the video! I'll start about the ingenuity in fights part. There are cases of feints and misdirections that occur in fights of the show. While more of that would have made the fights better, it still exists. Here are 2 examples:
When Aang fought Zuko in Ba Sing Se, after blocking a fire blast with air, he moved about as if preparing a big counter attack, only to then focus an air strike at the shape of his body that attacked Zuko and landed the hit.
Another example being Azula. She would often perform double kicks one after another, in combination with her fire bending, to confuse and disorient. Be it against Aang or the Kyoshi warriors.
Now as for the lightning bending! I would agree about your claim about the benders being foolish in Korra's time. Many people can use lightning and probably redirection too. So such ingenuity is a must. At Aang's time however, only the royals of the Fire Nation knew how to use lightning.
Lightning bending was only used by 3 people, only one of them knows redirection and taught it to another. So only 4 individuals in the whole world knew of lightning bending, one of the most powerful bendings in lore. (I don't include Aang since he only learned it in the last 4 chaptered episode. Only a day before the show ended while the others knew it for months at least.)
Given that its an ultimate move that only select few know, why would they require ingenuity? A powerful family secret ability few know or understand, with its counter only RECENTLY created, why would they consider ingenuity for this unlockable one kill shot that 90% guaranteed?
Sure, it would have made it better for them to use it more cleverly, but in the context of the time period, they didn't really need to at the time of the show. The shock value alone would leave their enemies open up for the lightning to strike.
Think of it like this: in Star Wars, not all the seven Lightsaber Forms were created at the same time. The first form's moves are basically refined Hack-and-Slash. When the Lightsabers were new. Only after time which gave familiarity and better wide understanding, the lightsaber's ingenuity was created via the other forms. But when the sabers were new, why would they need or think of ingenuity when they have such a powerful unknown weapon at their fingertips?
The only people able to generate lightning in ATLA were those of the royal line. Subtext being the strongest of firebenders. Not even someone like Jeong Jeong is shown shooting lightning.
Then in LoK everyone and their mother can shoot it.
Can you truly expect for the masses to learn the intricacies of a once rare art? Especially when most of the previous masters of that art are dead and gone? It would be nice, but that's a stretch, to say the least.
Of course the writers can do whatever they want with the show. So 🤷🏾♂️ anything is possible
Literacy was once exclusive to nobles. Now it's taught to everyone. Same applies to lightning generation. Also, any firebender can shoot lightning if they have enough mental discipline.
@vetarlittorf1807 not true for every culture but I understand
If Zuko never learned to shoot lightning, Iroh is dead, and Ozai and Azula are in prison, who taught it?
@@triplezeroxz5875
Iroh probably still lived for another 3 decades (potentially longer)
You do realise Azula is no longer in prison right?
@avatarmufasa3628 But Azula of all people teaching others? A stretch at best. Again, not impossible. Just highly unlikely
@@triplezeroxz5875
Maybe. But if teaching others lightning suited her goals, perhaps a means to give zuko some cause for concern, do you not think shed consider it?
I think the issue with what you're saying is that Ozi, specifically in the fight against Ang. didn't know that Anne could redirect lightning because Ozi only saw it from Zuko and he didn't know if Bazuka had time to teach it to ang. Never mind if Zuko did teach Ang because there were only three characters at the time that could redirect lightning. Irozuko and Ang. Obviously in legend of Korra, you are quite right that firebenders should do what you're saying with the redirecting and tricking because everyone can like and basically in legend of Korra Not everyone, but just like them people can lighten black people can metal bend much more people. Therefore your premise is correct in legend of Korra, but I don't think at the time of the final battle. would make sense.
It seems to me like lightning strikes are usually to unweildly to be used that way. It's like using a greatsword. It's too heavy too "feint" with perhaps.

3:28 a potential suggestion to versus maybe Aang vs Whammu (the divine sandstorm wind warrior vampire of fitness)
Avatar characters only. No cross overs at this time.
@@AntoineBandele okay
@@AntoineBandele Will you maybe at some point in time go back to your crossover versus series at sometime?
Unlikely. No time soon, in the least. Unless I expand out from Avatar for whatever reason.
@@AntoineBandele alright no worries then. Man so damn excited for Avatar Vs videos to come back!!! It's been a long wait for sure but it's gonna be a real blast to see you do what you do best brother!💯
Omg, I just realized that Toph is basically a wing chun fighter with her stance and even hand movements as well as her redirecting, counters and more. Though of course she still has that earth bending style, she is reserved and waits for the attack to come to her for maximum efficiency. I am a wing chun practitioner and I just realized this now after…. A long time since I last saw this show….. I mean dang, even to this day I’m finding out details.
No matter what people say about lightning...it's not something that is easy to generate in an instant
For anyone not named Ozai, sure.
Facts
Should be noted that firebenders who study waterbending are not a normal thing, that goes double, tripe, quadruple so in ATLA
Feinting isn’t a waterbending thing, though. It’s a standard combat technique.
@@AntoineBandele well, yeah, I'm referring to that. I'm alluding to the surprise factor. This wasn't a common thing in ATLA, meaning that few people would expect it. Remember that 1) lightning is faster than sound so people for the most part are no dodging that any time soon and 2) People like Ozai and Iroh who could summon it practically at will were the upper class of warriors *at the time.* It takes a long time to charge. It's kind of like the special beam cannon from DBZ, you're directing the energy into and out of your fingertips and so it requires concentration to do so. It would take enormous amounts of skill to direct your energy in such a refined way and incorporate it into feinting. As for making it miss on purpose. Azula did that to Zuko by aiming for Katara instead of him.
In LOK, well people could do it easily, I don't know what to say. Maybe the fire nation made it more common knowledge and 70 some years later it was commonplace.
@@AntoineBandele Although I will say that I agree that in Korra it would make sense for people to be using the lighting more strategically. Although I will say it seems to be less deadly in the hands of non-prodigies. Like when Mako used it on Amon and instead of dying he was basically like "ouchies."
@@maxkogan3785
Mako's feat here was impressive because he wasnt able to move yet managed to pull that off. We've seen Mako produce lethal amounts though (see Ming Hua in book 3 dying to lightning). Its one of the most impressive lightning feats in the franchise
Honestly, normal lighting users have to be straight since they cannot just shoot it like you can with normal bending. That being said, advanced users should, basically main, lightning should use feints and advance tactics to land those shots more. If anything, I’m now amazed that we don’t have a lighting base user who shoots lighting only and maybe casually uses fire to throw someone off guard or to heat something up.
Right. This would only be for Ozai/Azula types.
For a good versus idea Kuvira vs Unalaq since both would utilize faint attacks it would be really interesting who would win
i feel you can redirect all bending, and realistically will be harder for others to redirect lightning,
Every zodiac has its element
Air : 🌪 Gemini, Libra, Aquarius,
Water 🌊: Cancer, Pisces, Scorpio
Earth 🌎: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn
Fire 🔥 : Aries, Sagittarius, Leo
Which one are yall and are you satisfied with your element, (im a July 7th cancer im a waterbender and id stick with my element) just a way to interact with my fellow benders❤
I think you previous video if Im not mistaken the one where you explain why Fire lord Ozai which way more powerful than you think answer this videos question on
why lightning. Remember how lightning must be channeled and concentrated before unleashing its power? Its already more complicated to pull off versus just using regular firebending. So getting off an attack more masking it wouldn't do to much unless the opponent was some how stunned or dazed to give a better opportunity to fire off one so its not redirected.
Build up is required for novices. As we see from Ozai, he can pull it off near-instantly.
Hi question anthoneie do U think azula fire bending is blue because her attend is to kill in every fight just like zuko changed his bending color to raninbow to defend or do u think it’s because she’s great granddaughter of avater Roku and daughter of fire lord
It's a big assumption to think that the specific Chi flow needed to commence the lighting technique can be cancelled mid cast to fake it. They just never showed us enough of how it works.
Right. If the ability showed up in Fullmetal we would see all kinds of canceling and fake outs, I feel.
Can you tell me what would've happened if The angry Spirits released Vaatu upon the Fire Nation after they started hunting dragons for sport and creating imbalance in the Spirit World and the Air Nomad Genocide.
Funny you mention this. I JUST jotted down a note about a video for that yesterday about a similar notion. I feel like spirits and the spirituality side of bending should have been more effected by the airbenders getting killed off like they were.
I would love to see P'li against someone besides Combustion Man. I've always thought he as one of it absolutely strongest benders, besides Avatars and Bloodbenders ofc. I mean, near the absolute best among them. Maybe put her against Zaheer or Iroh, or even Ozai? I might be overestimating her, but still I'd love to see her in another versus.
Fair! P’Li definitely should match up with others besides Combustian Man.
The storm versus the needle. Yeah, remind me to do this one in the future.
Honestly during the final fight ozai had no idea aang could redirect it he only saw zuko use it, and it's a new technique
Azula did know this and zuko even taunted her with that hence why she aimed at katara
As of legend of korra we literally saw only 2 people use it offensively with lightning bolt zolt and mako and even then you can't know who can or cannot redirect it, hence why it probably wasn't done
Also if you look at the pro bending matches it kinda happens there just with combo with some else like how the wolf bats did in the matchup against the fire ferrets were the fire bender attacked while tano and the earthbender prepared the water filled with rocks move
Right. And then he completely abandons the ability after that. Instead of throwing out fakes.
For iroh it does NOT count
What does not count?
@@AntoineBandele I was saying that iroh’s lightning bending was great but he is more of a great fire bender and uncle

Sine you are doing VS videos again, I think it would be cool if you did match ups from the Baki series. That is, if you watched that series
VS only for Avatar, sorry.
Bothe Lightning Bending and Lightening Redirection are so rare that no battle style exists. The fact the you can shoot it or counter it is the trump card.
Even in Korra where it seams to no longer be such a safely guarded technique. It became manual labor and not and not a combat style.
It seams to be a very draining technique both physically and mentally. It's a big attack finisher that leaves you open if it misses.
I was about to say the exact same thing.
I think lighting being a trump card is the best way to describe it. It's best used as a surprise attack. There's no way Ming Hua for example would lure Mako into a pool of water knowing that he can shoot lighting.
This exactly. Like the first minute. And not just intentional misses, hit near your opponent and cause a fuckin explosion of debris and then either hit them with more lightning, or move forward and strike with whatever else
i think it makes sense that lightning bending is not as advanced and refined as other bending forms once you consider that, even though it does appear in (spoilers) the first kyoshi novel by the time of aang's show it's still very rare and outside of people's perception of what fire bending is, if you where the only person in the world with a gun there wouldn't be that much of a reason to become good at it, because you just win by having a gun
To be fair too azula and ozai they didn't even know lightning redirection was possible until iroh used it on azula and he was the only one they knew could do it in there mind lightning if you could get it off was a one shot with no counter that's probably why azula was scared of ozai he could use fast lightning and she couldn't counter lightning
Korra also faked an attack against the bats when she had a 1v1, I forgot which episode but it was in season 1
I think Lightningbending should get expanded upon. It really needs more Techniques. I think it's possible for Lightningbenders to use different hand forms and even kicks with Lightning. I don't see why Lightningbenders need to use only 2 fingers when Lightningbending. Why not use the palms? If Azula can hold the Lightning at the tips of her fingers; wouldn't that mean some level of control as long as it's within her body? She (or other Lightningbenders) could force the Lightning through her palms creating for of a blast than a stream.
I don’t think it needs new techniques necessarily (though that’d be cool). But I would like to see its base form to have less rudimentary uses.
@@AntoineBandele Fair.
In video games bosses with the most inconsistent attack patterns are the hardest to beat. So this makes total sense.
Right!?
I want to see Katara vs Azula because people usally say Katara can bloodbend her which she whoudlnt do because you know its agains her morals but some people also say Azula can just attack her with ligthing even do she tryed to do that multiple times and failed becuase Katara can block the ligthing with a wave or she can counter attack with her water (This comment is really showing that I am not a native english speaker lol)
Well for one thing, azula developed instant lightning in the comics which would be harder to block or dodge. You might say that mako also has instant lightning, but it doesn't allow him to win every fight he's in. Well that's because Mako doesn't use lightning that often because of his morals, but azula doesn't have any morals so I can see her spamming lightning in a battle. Though a battle with azula spamming lightning would be boring, so I can see the writers not making her do it if they want to have an interesting fight.
For the other thing, Katara can only bloodbend during a full moon, so even if she had morals off, she won't be able to bloodbend azula on a normal day.
Imo, logically azula would win, but really it would depend on who the writers want to win at the moment
@@Wes_Bradley-Taubner Finally somebody who understands me I also think Katara wins
@@Wes_Bradley-Taubnershe would win if she was facing Azula in the final fight, most definitely.
@@Wes_Bradley-Taubner Azula was far from her normal self.
I don't understand why people can't understand that.
Metal health issues and illness is a real thing.
Even zuko noticed it.
Zuko and katara didn't seem happy after beating someone who was very sick and needed help.
i mean mako can redirect lightning in the opposite direction like we see when he fight mechatank, besides there are many secret attacks in korra. Example when they fight with zaheer and korra is chained Tonraq distracs zaheer when korra earthbends or korra distracs zaheer when tonraq attaks with ice spike, same with Lin and Su when they kill P'li with metal suit Lin distracs Su kills
Secret attacks on a bigger scale like that is different from the quick feinting I’m suggesting.
Ozai and Azula dont INSTANTLY blast lightning. For Ozai you see him clearly doing the movements first. And the comic page you showed of Azula was her REDIRECTING lighting. So she doesnt even need to do all this. Mako is the only one shown to instantly bend lighting.
EDIT: I stand corrected Azula does bend lighting instantly in the comic but again she can redirect lighting too so someone like Zuko cant really do anything with her
Imagine being able to truly *_BEND_* lightning & make whip-like tendrils out of it
Tyl yi caj be a waterbender because she can sense people's aura like aunt kya
Shooting fire than lightning isn't going to work because lightning requires a lot of energy and longer charge up time.
Shooting lightning in a different direction is just stupid
Not for someone like Ozai. Ozai is capable of instant lightning.
Is their a possibility that lightning benders can draw miss lightning, more in LOK era.
In the case of the Royals they probably put to much pride in lightning generation to think adding feints and stuff in it.
For modern lightning benders they rarely used the high output version so lightning and fire makes no difference to their enemy.
The disrespect on Azula ozai and Iroh is crazy.

agree with the title in the sense that people act like it’s a sign of a prodigy… but feels like more like a cool party trick based on genetic or probability… like how the 4-leaf clover is really just an odd mutation… or how some people can make w’s with their tounge and others can only make an or can’t shape their tongue at all…
