  • The People's Mosquito is a UK registered charity dedicated to getting a DH.98 Mosquito flying once again in the UK www.peoplesmos...
    In the latest video update on the restoration of our de Havilland DH.98 Mosquito FB.VI, we go behind the scenes at Retrotec to show how some of The People's Mosquito vast collection of original technical drawings are being used to support the construction of new fuselage moulds.
    The film provides an idea of how de Havilland's technical drawings are indexed. In effect, engineers are navigating a vast family tree of assemblies and sub-assemblies to get to the right branch and the essential detail needed.
    This research by Retrotec's engineers is pivotal to ensuring full compliance with UK Civil Aviation Authority regulations regarding the remanufacture of a Mosquito airframe to OEM specifications.
    So while physical progress continues to be made on the moulds themselves, behind the scenes, research continues to identify the next phase of work required, helping create workpacks for use by the UK CAA-accredited technicians.
    All this behind the scenes work requires time and funding to complete. As we work towards returning a Mossie to UK and European skies, everything we do simply isn't without your support.
    To support this vital research and help fund the completion of our fuselage moulds to original de Havilland specifications, please visit www.peoplesmos...
    We can't do it without you.

    I can commiserate with you on the aspects of research, (try 15 years worth). The worst part of this endeavor is the lack of help from the Public Records Office, Hendon, and other library sources.
    Perhaps with the dawning of so many such projects the libraries will open up from 'classified' to 'what can I help you with?'. Best of luck.

    Top stuff, as a CAD engineer myself this is really interesting, and the Mossie is my favourite aircraft. Keep up the great work.

    Is this being built from the blueprints found in the Airbus offices in North Wales? Either way, well done for hopefully bringing a British WW2 Icon back to life.

    Those drawings are from the Mossie museum. As I recall there isn't much on the wing. Glenn Powell had all of that. You could get in touch with the Windsor Mossie group, they have copies. Someone needs to do the work and transfer everything to Solid works.

      We actually hold more than 23,000 de Havilland drawings - arguably the world’s largest technical resource of Mosquito-specific data in the world. We also acquired full Cad modelling and all the jigs necessary to complete the wing construction when we come to that stage of the restoration. For now, all efforts are focused on completion of the fuselage and that requires the moulds.

      @@carbidegrd1 Actually concrete moulds were made in all countries producing the Mossie (UK, Can & Aus) as the war progressed and necessity to ramp up production. Sadly none of these exist, all broken up and we don't believe the designs for them exist anywhere. Hence using the plans for the original approach. Many people often point out there are broken concrete Mossie moulds at South Mimms DHAM museum, but these are in fact for the Hornet. No there's another beast :-) ....

      @@johnlilley2777 The Canadian mould existed until the early 90's in Statford Ontario. The Windsor group just missed it. It was dumped along the shore of Lake Erie as part of a breakwall the Windsor group flew out to Halifax to look for the crash sites of two Mossies. They found them and recovered some parts. There are still 8 more lost in the lakes. After the war the aircraft and parts were sold off cheap. The Windsor Group and Tony Agar found sets of Radiators out there. That is one of the toughest things to find.

    Are you actually trying to restore a mosquito to airworthiness?.

    • @PeoplesMosquito
      @PeoplesMosquito  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Alan, we are indeed. We’re restoring a former 23 squadron NF.30 lost after take off from RAF Coltishall in 1949. We’re actually restoring as an FB.VI (the two marques share the same lineage). Not much of the original airframe is salvageable to airworthiness, the airframe will be new build of course, while we’re also acquiring original Mosquito components from around the world. Retrotec, our engineering partner in the restoration, are renowned for the authenticity of their airworthy restorations, so we’re proud to be working closely with them. Feel free to contact the team or visit our website www.Peoplemosquito.org.uk/campaigns for further details.

      Im so happy, the third air worthy Mosquito, here in the uk. Cant wait to see her fly.

    • @PeoplesMosquito
      @PeoplesMosquito  3 роки тому +2

      Sadly there are no airworthy Mosquitoes in the UK Alan, which is why we’re restoring RL249. There is HJ711, a Mosquito NF.II owned by Tony Agar, which has been restored to taxiable condition at East Kirkby, but that’s largely an original airframe so will never be certified to fly. Restorations have been completed in NZ for the US market, but the advantage of building here in the UK is we can do so with a UK CAA A8-21 certified engineering partner in the form of Retrotec.(plus our supporters can visit the restoration as she takes shape).

      Yes, you can (or at least will be able to again once restrictions allow!) They have specific open days too when she runs up - www.lincsaviation.co.uk/ for details. There’s actually three Mossies flying in the US now and Bob Jens’ original B.35 in Canada is potentially airworthy although she hasn’t flown for a few years now. Our UK-restored Mossie will be first in Europe for 25+ years. :)
