      A lot of it is inexperienced drivers who haven't driven in mountainous terrain, an inexperienced driver can have a major F up if they haven't had any training in mountainous driving because if they overheat the breaks or lose a gear and can't downshift to a lower gear they've got a problem, also not having a CB radio is common with new drivers especially the big mega carriers , a CB radio should be mandatory because it can save your life by being able to hear what's going on up the road or being able to warn other trucks that you've got a problem if you've overheated brakes.

    How many of these trucks are speeding because they have overheated their brakes? Are Jake brakes allowed? I have a motorhome that was only used in non mountain areas by the previous owner. When I took it out west I discovered how hard it is to slow down a diesel on a hill (there is no throttle valve on a diesel - letting off the gas does nothing to slow a diesel) so when I got home I immediately installed an exhaust brake as they don't make Jake brakes for the engine in it. I was no longer in danger of overheating the brakes.

    • @danielebrparish4271
      @danielebrparish4271 2 дні тому

      All vehicles have a shift lever. When I first got my license we took a family vacation to the mountains. Dad made me drive and told me not to touch the brakes when going downhill. I would drop it from Drive to 3 when we went over a crest and as it sped up I would drop it down to 2 sometimes touching the brakes briefly until it downshifted. I did that all through the mountains. They should teach that in driver's ed. Something I learned on my own was what to do when the engine races away with no input from the driver. I was slowing down for a stop signal at a busy intersection when the engine started to over power the brakes. I instinctively moved the shift lever to neutral which caused the engine to scream very loudly. I just ignored it until the car stopped. I then turned the engine off which allowed me to put the lever in park. I stepped out of the car to investigate and I discovered that the heavy rubber floor mat had a big wrinkle in it that was pushed up against the accelerator pedal. I moved the mat back, straightened out the wrinkle, restarted the car and continued running the errands that I had as a 17 year old.

      In Georgia, south of Atlanta on I75, they installed lanes that were supposed to be truck lanes. Then, as they were built, the local county decided to ake them pay for "HOV' lanes. Lexus lanes if you will. So now, instead of the trucks being segregated, just a handful of cars are in the Lexus lanes while traffic still backs up in Henry county Georgia, 7 days a week. He too was driving too fast and trying to pass another vehicle in a semi at a high rate of speed. he not only hit me head on, but he forced another semi to ditch his vehicle into the desert rather than hitting him head on so that truck driver demolished his truck because of that man and then the man that hit me also hit a small box moving truck before he even hit me that let you know how incredibly fast and erratically. Don't be a hypocrite. If you knew anything about the trucking industry, you'd know that within the last 12 months alone, scores of trucking companies have either shut down voluntarily, or filed for bankruptcy, causing THOUSANDS of drivers to be laid off, because of LACK OF BUSINESS. You also might know that there is currently such an over capacity of trucks that rates are near an all time low (adjusted for inflation). In some areas, trucks are sitting for days, even over a week trying to find loads. Some companies are hauling loads at a loss and others are running EMPTY just to get trucks out of certain dead areas. Also, companies are parking trucks indefinitely because rates are so low they cannot make any profit.
      Also, according to several trucking related associations, there are currently upwards of ten times as many CDL holders as there are TOTAL number of driving jobs in the U.S. that require CDL's. In other words, there are about ten times the number of qualified drivers as there are driving jobs in the U.S. You still think there's a driver shortage?

I can’t begin to tell you how many times cars cut in front of trucks without a second thought. I’ve had to blast the horn because some seaward couldn’t miss her exit and also just so the 2 idiots on either side of me, just trying to get in that space in front of the truck, wouldn’t hit each other because they don’t bother to look. More enforcement need to be done on both sides or maybe have a program requiring new drivers to ride with a truck driver so they can see how dangerous other motorists make it. Until the state adds more Troopers and station a Troopers full time to the canyon and utilize the camera system to enforce the traffic laws they already have you will continue to have truck wrecks.
    Most of these drivers are from out of state, I would say based on the registrations i see on the trucks speeding and passing in the canyon California is the biggest culprit.
    Toughen up the laws, arrest them and make it a mandatory court appearance and impound the trucks and the loads for a few days.
    Do that for a month and they will get the message.

    • @MudlangenTango
      @MudlangenTango 2 дні тому +1

      @AnthonyLagunas-yv6br of that was the case. Why isn't every truck registered in the same state?
      It's my personal observation that most of the trucks i observe speeding and illegally speeding in Glenwood Canyon are from California.
      Southern California they are running 15 to 70 and back.
      From the time they leave the dock or port, their clock is ticking.
      Lots of factors on why they speed.
      Inexperience is one, but the biggest one I believe is time.
      Truckers for the most part are paid by the mile, some activity, and they are not paid very well.
      If that truck is not moving they are not getting paid.
      Now add in DOT hours of service limits, 11/14/70 plus an electronic log book to prevent cheating on your hours and driver's making that Cali run back and forth two times a week are under a great deal of pressure.
      Don't forget the limited parking situation agravated by the mountain corridor.

Increase the pay, also a lot of companies make it mandatory that you stay over the road for at least 6 weeks before you get home time, fatigue is deadly. These same companies only give about 2wks before your allowed to drive solo, when I started 27 yrs ago you had to stay with a trainer for at least 6 to 8 weeks before you were allowed to run the truck solo. I’m retired now and glad I don’t have to drive next to untrained tired drivers.

    The messages on here are mainly correct, it depends on your weight is the factor going down hill. A that would put the brakes on wrecks on I70 Colorado is institute a minimum of 10 years experience to drive on I70 and a few other routes in Colorado, i70 west of Denver, some curves you probably want to be 10 to 15 miles an hour slower than posted speed limit. The truck's right hand lane is a feel good law that is really not beneficial,if you are heavy you want to be in a gear your engine break will keep you at speed without use brakes, so if you're light that speed might be 20ty miles an hour faster. I have been on some of Colorados wickedest roads and you have to be cool on the stool,but Colorado is full of sykoo's in cars and pickup trucks. States need to drop-off troopers and ride along in a semi trucks, and some of those beanie baby legislators, but they are 100% to goodie tushies for that,and they are probably some of those sykoo's in car's.

You're crazy to think that not driving mountains for ten years makes anyone better at driving mountains ten years later. It comes down to training and personal accountability. No one is supervising drivers and they have the freedom to make choices. Do they have integrity or self esteem? Something to think about.
