  • Those who were on the ground and those familiar with Ranger Creek State Airport may have noticed the deception in my edit.
My speed was right on the numbers as I dropped in over the trees at the south end of the runway. I slipped a bit, though, just for good measure. My speed was getting low and I was about to touch down when a gust blasted me on the nose, throwing my plane 15 feet back into the air. The only problem was that, after the gust disappeared, so did my airspeed, and I began to plummet toward the runway. If I didn’t arrest my descent, I believed I’d have a pretty bent up plane, although, lacking experience, maybe I was wrong. Anyway, I fire-walled the throttle and pulled the stick what must’ve been almost all the way back. The wheels hit the runway, but not too hard.
At that point, a more experienced pilot would’ve chopped the throttle and maybe just stayed right there on the ground, or at least set it back down. I, however, elected to keep the throttle in and go around. A ground-dweller hopped on the radio and said the winds were calm. I thanked him and decided I would just come back in from the north and land. That would be quicker, and it’s an easier approach. So, in the video, what you’re seeing is my fun approach from the south and my touchdown and rollout from the north. It just worked out better as an edit to combine the two.

I took off from Seattle international. Flew over to the mountain just as the sun was setting. The closest strip I could see was Ranger Creek. Not easy landing there at night. MSFlightSimulator too fun!

Haha! My heart rate increased as I was reading your comment. Landing there at night would mean there was some really big emergency. On an ultra-clear night with a full moon, I might not die.

Mountain flying after so little experience. Glad you made it home in one piece. Your vid brings back a lot of memories as we camped at Ranger many times and I dragged raced and Motocrossed at Thun Field in the 60's & 70's before that was closed down due to housing development. Keep it Shiny.

incredible to say the least, we camp there several times a year and watch novice to line pilots and even a former fighter pilot or two manage the low level winds,, bucket list is to ride along and witness what it takes. will pay very well to archive this once in a life time experience. you all are legends......

The guys you were with would be impressed that you tackled an airfield like this, and my god it's a dangerous one. Of course being scared of everything is unhealthy, but always remember having some fear is good. Congrats on your licence and all the best in your personal flying career!
