    It was probably caught in your class, but you forgot to the pi antibonding orbitals in your diagram.

    I'm confused about the CO2 example- wouldn't the point group be D infinity h, since CO2 is linear and symmetric?

      It absolutely is! But the first first second of this video shows the trick to use the D2h character table because, I don’t know if you’ve looked at the dinfh character table, but’s brutally complicated in comparison. The short cut is an oversimplification, but good enough for government work!

      I hate that I forgot to turn on the mic. Sadly I don’t have time to re-record it right now and my students need it. Hopefully in a few months I’ll have a chance to re-record!
