  • Seungmu(僧舞) literally means the dance of Buddhist monks. So it used to be performed by them until the end of Goryeo dynasty. However, it began to be developed into a folk dance mostly by Kisaengs because Joseon dynasty adopted Confucianism (instead of Buddhism) as their governing ideology.
    Seungmu dancers wear a very long-sleeved robe, which is useful when they express their struggle with a lot of mental anguish. And then they play the drum in order to rarefy those evil passions.
    Not only for the history and the meaning of Seungmu but also for the mixture of flowing movements and stillness, it is often referred to as the most beautiful Korean dance! So please enjoy it! :)

    승무 정말 좋다. 얇은 사 하이얀 고깔은 고이 접어서 나빌레라.시에서도 마치 승무를 보는 듯...우리의 정서에서 이해되는 이 아름다운 시~

      @@여소-h9r 현대에서는 종교적 의미가 거의 남아있지 않고 예술 그 자체로 보니까요 색다른 느낌이긴 하네요 ㅎㅎ
