Veruca's audition for the movie consisted of her saying, ""I want it now!" Roald Dahl wrote Matilda about the experiences he had in British private schools, not good. Willy Wonka was about his childhood love of chocolate.
Even as a kid, I knew that there was something sketchy about Grandpa Joe. He stays in bed for years on end, letting Mrs Bucket wait on him hand and foot, yet isn't bedridden enough to start into a song and dance routine about how he has a golden ticket?! 🙄
In the tunnel scene, all the actors and actresses did not realize Wilder was acting. They thought he was having a breakdown, etc. Thus, there responses were real.
a lot of scenes in this movie the kids werent told what was gonna be happening or shown the sets before filming so they could get their genuine reactions on film
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff The 1971 Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory is one of the best kids movies of all time, Gene Wilder is wonderful, it's charming, has memorable songs, great effects and set design considering it's low budget and age and terrific performances from the child actors. Everyone knows that movie. The Tim Burton remake is just a bad movie. I like some of Tim Burton's movies and i think Depp is a great actor but this is a major misfire. Depp's Willy Wonka acts like he has mental problems, the songs are loud and obnoxious so you can't even make out what the lyrics are supposed to be and it all has that signature Tim Burton visual style which i do enjoy but it's so overdone now it's become a cliche. Also the dry, sarcastic humor from the 1971 version has been replaced with annoying "random" and wacky nonsense and awkward silences like it's an episode of The Office or something. Avoid this dumpster fire and get your kids to watch the 1971 version, they'll love it.
Never understood Wonka/Oompa Loompa disdain for sweets/gum/t.v since his products largely revolve around the first two and he's planning big things for the third.

It's kind of funny how, as a kid, I thought Wonka was a father type figure to the Oompa Loompa's. Now, as an adult, it's kind of messed up how he tests his candy in them like they are lab rats and he probably doesn't pay them since they don't leave the factory. Also, Wonka's factory must have all the health code violations and the contest must have been rigged if Slugworth was able to talk to each kid the moment it was broadcast that someone found one

@@AveryTalksAboutStuff Yeah exactly! I feel like Roald Dahl somewhat based Willy Wonka on himself, kind of a weird recluse who was kind of an underrated genius of sorts (Dahl in the literary sense, while Wonka in the candy business).

@@AveryTalksAboutStuff i talked to a coworker about the charlie and the chocolate factory remake they agreed with me that the original movie from 1971 was better and depp was annoying
I know I watched this movie as a kid, because I remember being terrified of the chocolotae river scene. And like that's all I remember from it. Seeing this video made me realize it seems very funny, and makes me want to finally give it a try again (yeah that scene genuinely scared me for life)
That’s not what dystopian is. The other kids are seemingly well off. The Buckett family is just impoverished. Cabbage water was what they fed people in concentration camps 😬 Gum loses its flavor so you’ll keep chewing more, and buying more until the world is filled with chewed gum. I like the song Cheer Up Charlie. I think it’s very sweet.
23:32 Yeah, Julie Dawn Cole was the only one of the kids who kept acting well into adulthood (mostly on British TV), though according to Wikipedia she retired from acting in 2013 and is now a psychotherapist.
1. I first saw it when I was 10. 2. Roald Dahl the book author was a well known LSD user. (you can see why) He didn't like this adaptation, so we were cursed with "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory". 3. The Umpa Lumpas told the reverent portion of the story. Anything beyond that would have been unnecessary and overkill 4. I suspect Wonka knew which children would win the tickets (lessons for our behalf) because Slugworth/Mr. Wilkinson was at the scene almost immediately. 5. Many people (especially women) seem to get a creepy feeling from Gene Wilder's Willy Wonka. 6. This is the only roll Peter Ostrum/Charlie. He's now an Veterinarian. 7. After reading the script, Gene Wilder said he would take the role of Willy Wonka under one condition: that he would be allowed to limp, then suddenly somersault in the scene when he first meets the children. When director Mel Stuart asked why, Wilder replied that having Wonka do this meant that "from that time on, no one will know if things are real or not." Stuart asked, "If I say no, you won't do the picture?" and Wilder said, "I'm afraid that's the truth." 8. If you look carefully, you can see the little girl in the candy shop get wacked on the chin when the candy man opens the flip up counter. 9. Fun fact: Veruca/Julie Dawn Cole didn't have any adult with her when they went to Germany to film the movie so Gene Wilder himself stepped in to make sure she was taken care of.😎 10. You can get away with anything in a musical. PS: My son hated "Cheer up Charlie". I would tease him by singing with a lady's voice.
I remember playing a lot of the Wonka games on the internet, they were pretty fun for the most part except when Flash discontinued with some of them still can play without Flash though.
I wish they could’ve adapted the book’s sequel into a film - “Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator”. Have you read that? It involves aliens and Wonka/Charlie traveling to a place called “‘Minus-Land” in order to recover the unborn spirit of grandma Georgina’s spirit (when she de-ages past the point of being an infant)! Pretty wild! And Dahl also meant to write “Charlie in the White House” but that wasn’t finished sadly
I didn't know about the unfinished third book, but the second book is one of the few times I've given serious thought to covering a novel haha. That shit was wild 😜
I must seen this movie a lot on TV, Roald Dahl's books (at least the ones i've read & tv/movie adaptations) are so good. In other news man the K9 tv show (the Doctor's robot dog) i found a playlist of all the EPs, the only Doctor Who spinoff that is Australian & not sure if it's canon like the other 3 (Torchwood, Sarah Jane Adventures & Class). Dinosapien ok ABC Kids childhood that isn't Australian, more like British & Canadian (which Australian TV had a lot of those aired over there & many others), with dinosaurs & i love dinosaurs as i said about Walking With Dinosaurs & the certificate from a game that i printed from it's website that i don't know if it's there anymore. The Story of Tracy Beaker that i have never seen much or read the book series & it's many other series, which there's a lot of them upon looking up lol and there's playlist of it as well Yeah i'm also in that crowd of 1971 Wonka movie over 2005 Wonka movie. Don't get started with Tom & Jerry (Wonka version).
All these years later I still don’t know what the fuck was that knife guy’s deal was. A movie with little orange mini people, a girl who gets turned into fruit, and one that gets shrunk to the size of a quarter and THAT’s the thing which leaves me scratching my head. Weird.
Absolute nightmare fuel. In the book I think they're just extremely old and in the movie it's implied that grandpa Joe, among other things, is very depressed. At least that's how I took it.
I do prefer the Wilder to the Burton, with the exception of Wonka's introduction. The weird puppet show in the Burton is hilarious, especially at the end 🔥 🤣🤣🤣 I laughed pretty hard in the theater when they call it back later with the 'newly added puppet burn ward'. With the popularity of the Roald Dahl books, movies, and the Wonka brand candies, I am surprised we don't have a Wonka park by now. One part could be a legit factory tour, like Hershey, and the rest is rides, restaurants, and resort.
Yeah I think both versions have their place and capture different styles of comedy. I loved the puppet gag and the callback too. And absolutely, you know Wonka World would make bank.
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff It puts it in a different light, but on an in-universe, movie-logic frame? You're totally right on Uncle Joe being kind of a dick!
the remake isn't actually that bad, its just a bit odd they put the daddy issues into it. The darker feel actually fits Dahls writing better than this one. But out of the two I definitely prefer willy wonka over charlie as a film. Just a feel good colourful campy goodness, heaped with nostalgia certainly but still very much an entertaining watch for the entire family. The remake is a bit too intense for a full family film.
My mom took me to see the remake when it was out in the theaters in 2005. I was 4 going on 5 at the time. I clearly remember watching it at the movie theaters, Johnny's appearance and the whole aesthetic of the factory creeped me out and I was so worried about the naughty kids especially Augustus and Violet. I had so many nightmares of Johnny Depp Willy Wonka 😂 If you ever want to traumatize kids make them watch a movie directed by Tim Burton.
I feel like if Universal/whoever made a Wonka factory ride, there’d be an issue with attempting to taste the ride queue or drink chlorinated water dyed brown
I much prefer this Willy Wonka to Tim Burton's, but I can see why Grandpa Joe is a bit of a jerk here, I used to find him hilarious as a kid, but now that you point out these noticeable douchebag flaws of his, I can totally see your point lol. I still adore 'I've got a golden ticket' though! "Jumping crocodiles, Charlie" Did you know that Roald Dahl actually hated this movie? He was quite sceptical of most film adaptations of his books. The only one he thorougly enjoyed was a cartoon adaption of the BFG, made by a British animation company in 1989. Dahl sadly passed in 1990, so he obviously missed out on the 2005 adaption and of course, Matilda, James and the Giant Peach. etc.
Yeah like it's totally understandable that grandpa Joe can't work and shouldn't have to but he doesn't even help his daughter around the house but goes out to buy candy. He just comes off as mean in this version (due to no fault of the actor who was pretty adorable) I always felt that one of the ways the Tim Burton version did the book more justice was by effectively depicting grandpa Joe as a kind hearted guy who's more depressed than anything else. I find it funny because Dahl hated tv his whole life and then was salty when his books got adapted.
Also why do we hate Johnny Depp and Tim Burton? Also I would say the remake actually has gotten more love in the past 10 years or so. Much like original that it wasnt well received at first until years later
I don't hate Johnny Depp at all. Gene wilder said he liked him as an actor. At the time of this video we were all learning collectively how his ex had abused him and then called him an abuser and I was referencing my support for him as a survivor of abuse. Tim Burton has said some pretty racist things and so with Wilder saying he didn't like him I was referring to that when I said I also didn't.
Bob the butler! Ps I always found this movie 🍿 as a child off. Not just grandpa Joe but Charlie and Willy Wonka. I found it odd that there were a lot of boys/men. And the only two girls they made them out to be bad and annoying. But I found the charley, grandpa Joe and Willy Wonka. To be not the heroes, but little shit. Like there something off about them.
This movie has always been a weird mix to me. For the most part I think its mainly background noise but there are always parts that make me go....Huh...That was interesting can we see more? Like the tunnel scene. But anyone another great review Avery can't wait for the next one
"You can't own a person." Yeah, the Civil War ended 105 years ago (1971), lol. 18:05 "He just eats a lot, he doesn't deserve to be . . . ended." Yeah, kids who deserve that are ones who ask to play your GBA/Nintendo DS, and then select New Game and wipe your save file! lol. Is it too hard to have to common sense to go to Load Game, or if you hit New Game, select a BLANK slot?! XD
I do love this movie and it is one my favorites but I love making fun of it like you do. Also, the Oompa Loompa songs in the Tim Burton version are way better. I like the different types of music they used for the songs. Gene Wilder was absolutely perfect as Willy Wonka. There's definitely a reason why he's memed.
Most likely in the minority here, but I honestly like the Tim Burton version of the movie over the original 70’s version. Although that could be because I watched the remake first when it came out when I was little and watched the original only last year when lockdown was still in place 😅
I always have loved the remake and how much more accurate to the book it was. Gene Wilder is the only point in the ogs column in my personal opinion but everyone is valid in what they think. 🙂
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff personally i hated it so much the remake i wasn't a fan of the book either if they weren't going to do it like the original then they should have added something new to it instead of changing the ending of the original movie

I think I like the 1971 film and Tim Burton film equally. They both do things interestingly. The twist at the end of both films is a bit different, which is nice. Johnny Depp’s version of Wonka is great.
I totally agree! They're both so different I don't see the point in picking one over the other. 😅
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff 1971 movie is better
Check out the book Julie Dawn Cole (Veruca) wrote! "I Want It Now: A Memoir of Life on the Set of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory"
I need to read that book!
Did you ever see that viral Tweet (I refuse to call it a Post, besides it's, ahem, grandfathered in) about exactly what this video is about?
This was one of like 3 movies my sister would watch until I was like 10 (I'm 3 1/2 years older) and it brings back some interesting memories
My little brother hates this version passionately and insists on the Tim Burton version which we watched a ton as kids.
@@daniellel230 I actually love the Burton version!
Cabbage water was what they fed people in concentration camps 😬
Gum loses its flavor so you’ll keep chewing more, and buying more until the world is filled with chewed gum. I like the song Cheer Up Charlie. I think it’s very sweet.
Enjoyed
Hearing "I hope the queen gets better soon" here in 2024 caught me off guard
huge fan of this movie its great
she didnt get better
23:32 Yeah, Julie Dawn Cole was the only one of the kids who kept acting well into adulthood (mostly on British TV), though according to Wikipedia she retired from acting in 2013 and is now a psychotherapist.
1. I first saw it when I was 10.
2. Roald Dahl the book author was a well known LSD user. (you can see why)
He didn't like this adaptation, so we were cursed with "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory".
3. The Umpa Lumpas told the reverent portion of the story. Anything beyond that would have been unnecessary and overkill
When director Mel Stuart asked why, Wilder replied
that having Wonka do this meant that "from that time on, no one will know if things are real or not." Stuart asked, "If I say no, you won't do the picture?" and Wilder said, "I'm afraid that's the truth."
8. If you look carefully, you can see the little girl in the candy shop get wacked on the chin when the candy man opens the flip up counter.
9. Fun fact: Veruca/Julie Dawn Cole didn't have any adult with her when they went to Germany to film the movie so Gene Wilder himself stepped in to make sure she was taken care of.😎
Ooh, memory unlocked!
Willy Wonka: Geese.
You: Gooses.
I love your videos so much.
i like the tim burton version, if only because i was obsessed with freddie highmore as a child lmao, he had a chokehold on my childhood
I had a crush on Johnny Depp in high school and I'm sure that plays into my love for that movie.
Gene Wilder one of THE BEST. I enjoy Pure Imagination and the version and Ben Vereen's rendition on the muppet show
Gene just makes me happy every time I see him. He had this unique brand of comedy that always felt so comforting.
The Story of Tracy Beaker that i have never seen much or read the book series & it's many other series, which there's a lot of them upon looking up lol and there's playlist of it as well
Yeah i'm also in that crowd of 1971 Wonka movie over 2005 Wonka movie.
Weird.
veruca's song made me think of jasmine's song in twisted, whichnow i suppose is the inspiration
I don't think I've seen that!
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff oh you should, it's one fo my favourite starkid musicals, it's really good
That tunnel scene was one of my first instances of nightmare fuel. Also, did the grandparents(allegedly) have polio?🤨🤔
So, speaking of Uncle Joe, Just Write actually had an interesting video on "Uncle Joe and the Myth of the Lazy Poor". It's pretty good stuff.
Interesting, I'll have to check that out.
Fair enough 🙂
Ick, that's a valid point. 🤢
they mostly remake movies to repackage things for young audiences to see new stars theyre promoted, and get new production people and producers dough
"Jumping crocodiles, Charlie"
Did you know that Roald Dahl actually hated this movie?
9:21 thats ironic
Yeah, a lot of these jokes about the Queen REALLY aged poorly. Even though I didn't know about her, still felt sad when I found out she passed away.
@AveryTalksAboutStuff Ohhh sorry I don't keep up with celebrities as much but thats disappointing to hear about Tim.
Thank you! And that's true, it's definitely paced super weird.
I think those randoms bits of people are actually in the book lol.
XD
The computer might be the smartest character in the whole movie! 🤣 I'm dead! 💀
And yes, I also HATE that song!!! 🤮
Thank you! 😂
Actually the foam machine scene wasnt fun to film. It gave the actors reactions and burned their eyes and skin
Oof, didn't know that.
I totally agree! And the lyrics for the remake songs come straight from the book. ☺️
Think of all the free candy they gave away and lost $$$$
Hopefully Wonka made enough by selling all the contest candy to cover his legal fees. 😂
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff you should watch legal eagle video about that
Hey, just to let you know, the comments on your latest video just got turned off. Between me starting to watch it and deciding to comment.
Ugh, I'm sorry. They should be back now. I already turned them on once and UA-cam wants to test me 😂
Percentages. Avery talks about math. :)
Sir, there are seven continents. Avery talks about geography. :) I have the same job as Mike's mom. You are not old. Im older than you. Older than the trees, younger than the mountains. Old enough to know better. Young enough to do it anyway.
Haha, I felt like a substitute teacher 😂 Props to Charlie's mom for holding it down.
Yep, I seen “How It’s Made”.
As for what kids do these days, I think Fortnite?
Probably Fortnite for sure 😂
You're really pretty 😊
Thanks!
Company real there ones which make candy we know as nerds for rest need travel to Europe for.

My mom also hates that song
I think everyone does 👀
