Crochet Skirt - In-depth Tutorial for Beginners

- This Crochet Thigh-laced Skirt is an original ABoC Studio's design. The pattern was written with love & care by me, Natalie. Feel free to share the pattern, and sell your final hand-crafted product. In all cases, make sure you credit ABoC Studio. Thank you 🤍
WHAT YOU NEED:
1. Crochet Hook: 6.00mm and 5.0mm (you’ll need both)
2. Yarn 125-250gr (depends on how big your skirt is; usually I wear S-XS so my skirt is 125gr). Any Yarn from category No.3/Dk or No.4/Aran would work (The thinner the yarn the lacier the fabric would turn out; in this video I used 2 types of yarn: Purple acrylic No.3/Dk and a little bit of Orange mohair No.1/Fingering). Mohair works great with this pattern. However, mohair and dark color yarn are only recommended for advanced crocheters (Because they’re quite hard to handle) 🧶🧶🧶
• Scissors and Yarn Needle
• Waist & Hip Measurements: This is a made-to-measure pattern, so if you’re about to make this skirt for yourself then these measurements are not necessary. We can just try the chain on our bodies.
PATTERN NOTE
We’re gonna start at the waist with a chain that is based on the Hip-measurement (The waist is usually smaller than the hip, so the skirt’s waist-line always needs to be big enough to slide through our hips).
We need to use a bigger hook (6.0mm) to work the chain before switching to the smaller one (5.0mm) for the rest of the skirt. This is because we don’t want our chain line to be stiff, and using bigger hook kinda adds a bit of stretch and makes it go easier.
This is a "made-to-measure" pattern, there will be NO given number of chains & stitches. I recommend you to keep counting these numbers on the piece you work on, so that the shape of your skirt would be nice & even.

I’ve been crocheting for a little while now and I would say I’m at the intermediate level and out of all the tutorials I’ve followed, this is by far the easiest to follow along to. I wish I would’ve seen this when I first started because it’s genuinely explained and shown perfectly 😩

Round 3-10 14:40 Dc each St til end, SlSt, ch 2, turn (continue if need more length) loosen up 2nd ch (Lu2c)
Row 11 18:45 Dc each St, ch 2 Lu2c, turn
Row 12 - 15 19:40 Dc into 2nd St and each til end,(Dc in second ch) ch 2, Lu2c, turn
Row 16 - 23 24:00 Dc in 2nd St, (Dc) Dec, Dc each St til end, Ch2 Lu2c, turn (stop when you prefer slit to stop opening) (if more length needed without opening slit, add St without Dec)
Last Row 29:30 change color, ch2, dc each st til end, BO
Lace up chain 30:45 ch approx 100"
Drawstring 33:00 ch 2x waist measurement (ex. 33" * 2 = 66" ch)
Weave hidden drawstring through Dc Posts @ waist line
Lace up slit and finish

Wait so the 6mm crochet hook is only needed one time?? Can i use 5mm instead?
@@mariaghtaimi7139 the 6mm hook is used to work the chains for the waist. Using the 6mm for this instead of the 5mm will help the wait not be so stiff. Once you finish the waist chains and join in the round, you switch to the 5mm for round 1

finished it! my third project. super easy, only took about 12-15 hours! the chain waist band is genius, i'll definitely keep it in mind for other projects, as a way of avoiding having to weave elastic (especially as i tend to have issues fitting stuff at the waist). it looks so pretty! i used light multicoloured pink-blue-yellow for the main skirt, and dark multicoloured black-purple-green for the bottom and strings!

@@ABoCStudio thanks! Unfortunately I also learnt the hard way from this project about RSI and crochet elbow 😭😭 I have physio in a week and will probably need splints for a while. I wonder how many new crocheters get caught out with this lol.
When I get back into it, I'll be stopping and stretching every 30 minutes, and I've ordered ergonomic hooks. Do you have anything in particular you do to prevent hand and arm injuries when regularly crocheting?

I would definitely recommend you to get the "soft grip crochet hooks" and also you can diy the soft grip with beauty sponge/blender (images.app.goo.gl/tE2jrBssVgL7b4u36). And yes taking mini breaks within the project is very important for our handicraft-well-being, we can stretch or walk around or look outside (muscles & eyes exercises). @@ABoCStudiowhile I have you here, is there any tips you have for not having the lace slit tightening shut while wearing? I've tried multiple tying methods but what happens is as soon as I start walking, in order to move with my muscles, the slit pulls closed and then the parts wrapped around my leg become loose. Whether it's loose or tight, the results are the same
@@shadycatz85 I think you'll need to make the whole skirt tighter, so that it won't have space to pull the slit together. You can watch out for the stretchiness of your crochet piece's fabric, it has different degree of stretch that we tend to forget. Hence the skirt flat measurement may be right, but together with the stretch it's actually bigger than what you need 🧶

@@ABoCStudio I finished the skirt, however I initially had some issues with my yarn because in my country they’re labelled a bit differently. I used a smaller cotton yarn (and hook) and the stretch was different too, so I found it a bit hard to estimate how much I had to crochet! But after redoing the start 2 times, the rest was easy :) I also realized my body is very different from yours so I had to crochet the skirt wayyyy longer to cover my butt. The end result is super cute though 🥰
It was super easy to follow even as a beginner!!

@@AL-ho4cu about the strings, they really tend to slide down. I just fix it once in a while or let it be. Sometimes,I also use bodytape (2sides transparent) to keep fabric on my clothes stays fixed in someway I want. But I only use the tape for like an important photoshoot, normally I just let the clothes be and fix it when I need ✨

Hi there, it's her yarn that is aready changing colors (sometimes it calls ombre yarn), you can check out Sultan Pastello yarn by brand Cotton Kings the color 08 is pretty similar to Sakura's. You can increase stitches by the sides of the skirt, simply work 2Dc in 1 same place for an increase!💞

@@jungkookoppa957 if the seam get curvier overtime as you working the rows then it’s likely that you accidentally increase stitches without knowing, the best thing to do is count the number of stitches you have after each row and make sure that the next row has the exact same number. Only on the row(s) that you purposely increase/decrease stitch(es), then the number would change accordingly to your adjustment!
