I have 11 chickens who have been laying everyday, even in this cold Utah winter. I too feed my girls veggies, table scraps, black fly larvae, and fruit. And I mix dried herbs like oregano, thyme, garlic powder into their food, which helps with the immune system. The oyster shells are a great source of calcium, as well as baking their egg shells, grinding them down and feeding that to them as well. Yes, the old ways are better and so much more healthy for them. And the eggs are fantastic! My girls are so healthy and happy. You take care of them, they will take care of you. Plus they make the best pets!

This is exactly why I mix my own feed. Mine have been very dark yellow. OH they are good eating. I have sunflower seed, milo, millet, whole oats, whole wheat, flax, corn (only during winter), and scraps. Yes, I am also growing Marigold, Nasturtium, and herbs for them. They are LOVING it! No more waste of money for commercial feed!

Lot of truth to this Brother Lead. Commercial chicken feed was intended for commercial poultry growers. For the average backyard chicken grower like us, it is a luxury. I have chickens. Grew up with them. And they get table scraps, vegetable scraps from a local restaurant, outdated bread from our local bakery outlet, nightcrawlers, and greenery that I pick for them depending on the season. HOWEVER. You must have what, $30 worth of meat and vegetables here? Or more? $30 will buy 100 lbs of quality laying pellets from my local supplier. Which is enough, with everything else my chickens get, to feed them 2-3 months. We simply cannot afford to cook that much throw away food at mealtime. Kinda cutting your nose off to spite your face ain't it?

We do give what little kitchen scraps we have to the chickens. Because of food prices we make sure to not waste our food and repurpose it into another meal. We do buy local feed mill food and whole grains for our chickens and ducks but we ferment it so it goes further and makes it healthier for them. We do let them free range and scratch and dig for bugs and a few of my egg customers bring me food scraps for the girls. We also grow fodder and seed sprouts for the girls in the winter when there chicken garden isn't growing yet. We also raise meal worms for them as well. I've tried asking neighbors for food scraps and only one brings me some. Most of our neighbors get food delivered almost everyday . It's really mind boggling to me as they have no clue how to cook food in there own home. We are the only home in my neighborhood that grows a large veggie garden and has chickens. Everyone else uses landscapers for there yards and never even step outside to enjoy there yards.

So the lake outside our town has muscles in it. We did research and learned they are made of calcium just like oyster shells. Last summer, instead of buying oyster shells we went to the lake and "harvested" the muscle shells and threw them in the yard for the chickens and ducks to peck at. This summer I'm going to do it again but I'm also gonna bring sum home with critters in them and throw the critter shells in our huge deep freeze that catches rain water so we can grow our own. I also plan on feeding the critters to the ducks

My chickens just hatched from an incubator and I am never giving them that store bought stuff. Growing up in Jamaica where people didn’t know about that commercial stuff the chicks were fed some corn, coconut and whatever else we had to eat. We do need to go back to the basics and stop depending on the matrix for everything or your birds will be starving. Made my own little feed and my babies are so happy. So far it’s oats, wheat, cornmeal, amaranth, sunflower seeds and quinoa. That’s what I had on hand. Will be adding to it as I learn moving forward. The internet is having everyone in a chokehold, thinking they can’t act in the best interest of their livestock. Everything has to be made by someone else because we can’t be bothered. Sigh!!

I asked myself if it was necessary to give them purchased grain/seed if they’ll have the run of the yard anyway. I always compost our kitchen scraps, I’d be willing to give it to the chickens instead. I’ll be getting some decent fertilizer from them anyway after collecting the poop.

Hi Lead! It’s been a minute since I’ve been to the channel. Had a lot going on! But you’re right! My grandma didn’t even buy dog food from the store! They ate what we ate! These folks Erk me talking about their dog can’t have table food! What do they think dogs eat in the wild? What do they think chickens eat? I don’t understand folks! We’ve become TOO COLONIALIZED! You’re right! We’ve got to go back to what our ancestors taught us! My grandfather that kept hogs kept a bucket in the kitchen! Our food left on our plates after a meal, went into that bucket! We fed it to the hogs! It was called slopping the hogs! My grandfather grew corn! So the only other thing they ate was corn off the corn stalks! That’s it! For people who didn’t grow up like that, they don’t know! It’s good they have someone like you to teach them!

I never thought of meat 😊I do give them veggie scraps. I did wonder about bagged dog food and what people did in the old days, I don’t remember my dogs having teeth problems like they do now. It all makes sense 🌻

You are so right! Feed them scraps. That's how I saw it growing up in country with my parents and 7 siblings...and we never stopped working and we always had plenty. Use everything and keep on working.

Your videos make so full of inspiration. I’ve been nervous thinking why did I just purchase these beautiful birds? I don’t want to fail them. God knows I kept thinking that I should be saving the table scraps for them. Then I find your channel. Just wonder if it’s safe for babies?

Best video I've seen on this topic, too many people forget how we did it back in the day of real men and real women. Now if it aint bought at the store it aint no good, I think the old tried & proven way's are the best way's. Thank you for this video, you got a new subscriber and 55 year chicken keeper. GOD Bless!

    New results Gen 2 birds.
Its official. My largest egg hatched (77.20g) is now my alpha rooster. Bigger eggs ARE SUPERIOUR.
    He is a splash/blue cross.
Obtaining the Gen2 flock cost me 1.5 year premium feeding Gen 1's. This was exclusive 12 hour days harvesting, preparing, each morning, feed of which calories mostly meat. Fish, road kill deer etc. At an ultra low cost of $1,000 per bird.
Bottomline was strongest possible healtiest birds & egg size.
Maria Hall Jersey eggs were 18 Large
    18 Xtra Large
    2 Jumbo. (Up to 72g)
My Gen2's were much much bigger.
    8 Extra Large
20 Jumbo (up to 77.20 grams)
    Is bigger better? Yes.
Bcuz my largest egg is now my alpha Gen2 Rooster. He is 9lb 4oz.
I do have 9lb 8oz Blue/Black cross but he is month older.
I spent all mornimg re compiling data (pictured) bcuz thwitches destroyed my earlier records bcuz these facts expose them. They also reveal me as th chicken king of kings &they DESPISE my ruling (obliterating lol) their roost. It means the end of them.

Deer calories vs (my) 6 Jersey Giants.
(Your results wont vary. They wont even be remotely close. I developing a new seperate breed of Giant @an ultra low cost of $1,000 per bird with utterly revamped approach 2managing thbirds 2max out on egg size &fat. (Champion breeders averaging 62.5 grams per egg my birds averaging 71.30g per egg & 1.5lb fat @6month butcher &bigger egg bigger chicken roosters up2 36" tall @5months.
    Thdata:
    54.96lbs meat in 6 12lb Jersey Giant.
Calories tell dffrnt story bcuz chest cavity &meat PACKED with fat.
    Not apples2apples.
    42.96lb meat &12lb fat =
    (21.437 calories meat) &12lbs fat = (48,900 calories fat) in 6 my12lb Jersey.
    Note:
Normally 8.16lb meat in 13lb chicken, or 68%, but my Jersey have 1, 2 lbs organ fat chest cavity so we estimate 9.16lbs meat per 12lb bird)
    6 Jersey Giants =
    48,900 + 21,437 = 70,337 calories per6 12lb wagyu (fat rich) Jersey giants.
Versus (if) your deer yields 78lbs meat u will have 42,432 calories.
Note deer must weight 175lbs. to yield 78lb meat.
(Whitetail bucks average 150, fenales 100lbs)
Threality is average deer yields 52lb meat or 28,288 calories.
6 of my 12lb Jersey giants yield 70,377 calories
