Samsung's top tier mid-range phone for 2024 is the Galaxy A55. I've been putting it through its paces for the last fortnight to find out if it's worth buying or not. Turns out... it depends...

I returned my s24+ for the A55 and do not regret it. The s24+ photos were blurry and grainy and the camera had trouble focusing on the subject. Most of the photos I took it looked like a small circular area in the center was clear and the rest of the photo around it was blurry and the whole photo having an overall grainy effect. My s9+ does a better job and I compared the s24+ and A55 in the shop and I was amazed at the quality, even when you zoom in a lot the A55 captures so much detail. At more than half the price too!
Same for me except my main reason was the terrible speakers on the s24 plus, the a55 has excellent speakers and is an all round solid device. No regrets here either!
oh really? I was thinking about buying the s23 but if the A55 is as good as you say, now I'm not sure, how is the phone today? Do you still recommend it instead of s24?
@@nahomimishel2380 yes it's still a great phone!
@@nahomimishel2380 es! Is really!!!
Omg i thought that i was crszy to swap my s24+ for midrange smartphone haaaha. Ive got a55 too 🎉😂
Of course there’s a big ass spider just chilling in the garden in an Australian channel. 😆❣️
Correction: That's a normal ass spider. The big ass spiders are much larger.
Omg.. I just busted out laughing like a maniac reading these comments.. I really needed that laughter 😂😂
Would love to give Sumsung a few more hundred dollars and get an S series but I hate no SD card support, so I'll get one of these instead. Thanks Sumsung.
Bought the A55 on March 25, 2024, which was its release date in Australia afaik.
The antenna tests stronger than 2 older Samsungs (A32 5g, S21).
What test?
Calls are not as flaky on the A55 in the same low reception spot.
So all antennas are not the same.
Great review your one of the better reviewers out there in my personal option.
Appreciate that! While I've got plenty of experience writing reviews, crafting them for video is a skill I'm still working on (and will be for some time, I suspect).
4:16 The cameras are the same. However, you have a different GPU, wish is much more important for your photo quality.
Sure, it can be -- and that's the basis for Samsung's claim around better low light photography, though I didn't really see much evidence of that in my testing.
Never pay full price for a Samsung on release.
I just got one from Amaysim, EOFY sale $399 AUD
Actually, I'm not sure, but I do have some doubts about whether it's a good deal to go for a mid-range product. I always think it might be better to buy a refurbished or second-hand phone that is two or three years old, or even older, which would cost the same price, but at least you're getting something that was considered high-end at the time.
For the same price, you get something that is mid-range-is it really worth it after all?
Wouldn't it be better to spend 500 euros on an old flagship that was top-of-the-line at its release rather than spending the same amount on something mediocre that you will keep for several years?
That's the question I'm pondering.
I want a comfortable for typing phone for social media, texts, emails, calls and video calls. With big battery and good camera, is this a55 better then iphone 11pro (my current one)? The keyboard is driving me crazy on my current phone?
Yes
Large screen is much better to type, it's 6.6 inches😁
It has a better keyboard but it's not a better phone. Doesn't have more powerful silicon or anything. But Android has way better keyboard options, and the IOS keyboard is a joke.
But this is a mid-range phone in the iPhone 11 was a flagship. It's an older flagship but still it had class leading silicon at the time.
Probably better off. Just getting an s23 on the resale market, that way. At least you're getting flagship silicon and it'll be less expensive than a brand new a55
@@michaelcorcoran8768 thank you for the comment, I've decided to stay with my iphone 11 pro for the moment,at least as long as it is working. I have never had any problems or glitches with it and more ppl commented similar opinion as u and I've decided to keep it as long as I can.
On the A55 you can install any keyboard you like. I have one and I use Gboard, I upgraded from an A52 and I love this phone so much. Feels and works like a flagship phone for 1/3rd the price. And it works really well without any real lag either, it's a very smooth experience. I haven't tried playing games but just for social media and stuff. The camera is very similiar to the iphone 15, but also with AI editing features 😎
The camera looks fibe to me for the price. Ive got an A55 on its way. In upgrading from an A53, which has been fine for everything I use it for.
I'll be keeping my A54. I love my phone so much. 😊
I went from A50 to A55.
In the US I think the price start off around $400 and up
Nothing 2A could do symmetrical bezels at half the price. Not sure what’s holding them back from doing such on the A series.
Even the redmi note 13 pro
Said this before my A71...yes still using it!,for now!...has slimmer bezels which they did on both earlier A70's & A50's!,so they've gone backwards!,will never understand that, they can always optimise the software to work better with the Exynos chip!,can only hope they listen for next time!
@@paulmaynard1384This company killed the A7X lineup, gutted the jack after the A52S and will prolly remove the sd card soon on the A5X line. And then have a bunch of A1X, A2X and A3X to dump the sdcard+jack combo and make them look like features for poor people.
Why don't reviewers review the fundamentals of phones, like antenna strength, ability to read the screen outdoors, mic and speaker voice quality. Personally I buy a phone to use primarily as a phone, not a camera or internet browser or gaming device.
Outdoor screen quality I will note where it's relevant, but the rest is massively subjective if you're talking about phone calls -- much of that is as dependent (and often more) on the mobile phone network you're on, prevailing conditions and environmental factors. I can get a terrible call on a high-end premium phone if I'm nowhere near a tower, and a great call on a budget phone if I'm blanketed in coverage. Doesn't tell me much about either phone, and even if I do, it's only really about that network at that location at that point in time (see also my point about 5G in this very review)
@@AlexKidman
You are missing the point.
1.
Comparative phone transmission and reception performance is objectively measurable.
Indeed, Telstra measures antenna performance and makes recommendations for superior performance in regional areas, via its Blue Tick award.
Optus has a similar test and award called Top Picks.
2.
Pretty much every smart phone has a field test mode that returns RSRP. (dBm). A simple comparison between several phones is possible by using the field test mode simultaneously from the same location.
@@helicart Thanks for the feedback -- it is appreciated! But I do get the point (and I'm 100% aware of Blue Tick, etc; indeed I've gone through Telstra's Blue Tick facility some years ago, an interesting test location and setup). However, their testing (and Optus') is under specific controlled conditions where they control the network and its variables to come up with objective test figures; I can't guarantee that, especially over time where networks are reconfigured, environmental variables change, network stress varies and so on. My results would be subjective due to issues beyond my control. What's more, they can test over multiple phones at the same time, but typically I've got a review phone for a month or less, which means (while it would have value and be interesting to do) I can't do same-time comparative testing of models within a range with any degree of accuracy.
@@AlexKidman
Thanks Alex .
Off the cuff, my quick and dirty approach to antenna comparisons over time would be thus:
- one phone you own (A) becomes your baseline. A is tested from one location multiple times via its field test mode. Over time, you will get an idea of how much dBm varies at that spot for A.
- every time you get a new phone (B,C,D...) to test, you could retest A, then test B,C,D....
Each phone test would require perhaps 3 trials spaced one hour apart.
Ideally, A and B would be tested simultaneously, using two SIM cards from the same carrier.
Using A as the baseline should allow meaningful comparison of test phones B,C,D,....
i.e.
B performs 5dBm lower than A.
C performs 13dBm higher than A.
This isn't perfect, but it is meaningful.
And it is always wise "not to make perfection the enemy of progress".
Because that actually requires effort and appropriate (expensive) equipment.
8:50 Google Tensor ship is also based on Exynos.
Based on, for sure -- but it's not a straight up Exynos, so it's not like I'll see the 1480 itself in a Google phone any time soon.
Nice review, but the A55 seems overpriced. Software updates are nice, but that depends how cpu intensive future updates will be, especially with on phone ai becoming a more important feature
It depends on the software optimization. Samsung knows how to optimize underpowered cpus for their software. ONE UI is the most optimized android OS, even better than pixel OS in some areas. Chinese phone OS cant match ONE UI, that's why they just add powerful specs to compensate their bad software
Samsung midrangers are always pricey at launch. The price will drop by 30% pretty soon. This has always been the case
In my country, the A55 is already cheap at launch
@@laurencemallari5101which country?
How is it over priced it's only 475€
I have a Samsung Galaxy A73. Is it worth changing to A55? I am thinking not worth it. What do you all think?
We have the same sentiments... i don't want to regret.
I made the switch from the a73. A55 is clearly an upgrade from the a73, especially the cameras and the battery optimization.
Wish it was smaller
What bothers me the most is the Exynos processor, the thick bezels and the virtual proximity sensor I could forgive, but not the processor. Btw, 253Hz PWM dimming, again?
It's equal to 7 gen 3 😐

The only thing stopping me from buying the A55 is the weight and hold feel, it's not fun to hold for one or two-handed holding. Add a case, and that's another source of weight and I wouldn't want this to drop on my feet.
You don't even own it yourself, so how can you know that. The weight is definitely not an issue
I've just bought it and have zero regrets, very premium device
Would it be worth it for my A52. I just got a software update a few days ago. How many more updates can I expect with my fifty two.
No more major updates. I have A72, and i'll buy this to replace it. The only thing i will regret is the telephoto camera 🤷🏻♂️
Yes tele Photo will be missed. I also don't like the exynos. My 52 has the snapdragon. It has been working great since the last update. I'm really not sure. What the hell i'm going to do. I'm not going to rush to judgment.
@@garybateman6869 depends very much of wich A52 you have. If the 4g You have the snap 720g like i have, wich to be honest is damn slow, instead if you have A52S you have 778g is not that bad for nowdays. Yes exynos is not as good as the snap but i will see many review of the A55 before buy it. The real problem is that there are no alternatives, i would like to buy S23+ but the price is too much, S23 FE in Italy has only exynos 2200 wich is more powerful than this but is worst, and has only 128gb of rom. However A55 should be better than A54, buy far so i think it will not be a bad choice.
I'm also on a a52 and I think it's best to wait about 6 months for the price to come down then it'll be worth it .
@@Crabby.1 maybe 350€ is good, now is 530€. It's overpriced
By the way, if you believe the screen flash is nice, you should see it on an iPhone. It flashes the ENTIRE screen for like, what, 20 milliseconds? Which makes it work pretty much exactly like a flash.
Samsung's implementation is SO bad I believe it must be intentional. The circle flash is up for SECONDS, which inevitably causes everyone in the shot to squint their eyes.
I tested my A54 against an iPhone 11. Absolutely no contest. Selfie flash is 1000x better on the ancient iPhone.
Samsung likes to degrade the software experience in their A series phones, whether it be the app opening closing animations, blur effects or even gatekeeping the camera assistant app
Yeah, IPhone cameras are better than Samsungs
So same cameras and processor as the A54? Why not just get that on sale?
Yes. Is. It.
Poco x6 pro best mid range phone .
Samsung A55 - 256gb storage and micro sd card 👌🏼
Their night be better mid range phone's but Samsung actually kept the micro SD & I need that.
You could easily say this is a S24 plus and people wouldn't know the difference by looks
I mean I would be able to tell because the bezels are so much bigger on the a55. Maybe from the back or sides I couldn't tell. I don't really mind bezels or anything but it would be an obvious giveaway.
They would by camera, display color, and bezels. I guess if you hold it but don't use it then you'll fool ppl
@@michaelcorcoran8768not noticeable if u get the right phone case😂
So its basically a S24, with a worse SoC and camera system ?
This is pretty much the Galaxy A model; a lower cost variant of the flagship line of that year (or sometimes the year prior)
I've owned a few Galaxy A models, but this years A55 is a bit different. The metal frame is also a suprise for this price point
Your eyes are so blue 😮😮
s23 brand new in my country is right now 552 euro. let me think....
552 euro is roughly $912 AUD, though -- there is a price difference here (and it would depend if your variant was the Exynos s23 or Snapdragon too, though IIRC the Euro ones are also Exynos?)
We all have the same problem. I heard the fifty five was canceled in the United states. Anybody else hear that.
You can be pretty sure that both the A35 and the A55 will make it to the US. That has always been the case with A3x and A5x series, no reason to change that.
It's just that Samsung is releasing it first into markets such as India first because of the difference in the socioeconomic status between Americans and Indians.
Americans are more to likely to get flagships, so they get the phones a bit later to make sure everyone who had doubts between the flagship and midranger goes for the flagship.
There's also the matter of logistics. Samsung has assembly lines in India, Vietnam and other developing countries. So it makes sense for such countries to get the phone first
Because iphone 15 (basic) is so much better than a55 and only a little higher priced.
@@modelbaumok9210 You do realize that the base iPhone 15 with 128 storage costs 800 USD and the A55 will soon drop to below 400?? That's basically double the price. And the 128 iPhone isn't worth it, you need the 256 at least which will set you back 900 bucks whereas the A55 can take a SD card.
Those guys in the US know their phones and probably can't be tricked into buying a55 over fe
I'm gonna ditch Samsung.
I've been waiting for a decent replacement for my 4 years old A71 and new models are deceiving.
Overpriced, ugly bezels, Exynos
The Nothing Phone 2A however
9:27 I don't know which phone to buy among midrangers
Buy an older flagship...S23 way better and looks better also than A55 + it's the same or better than S24 (with all the hype around S24/24+ exynos is inferior to S23/23+)
Poco x6 pro, all the way
What do you need a phone for? It's a no good computer and a no good professional camera. I would take the battery life over the rest.
Powerbanks r cheap though
too bad about those bezels....A similar priced phone from other brands are much smaller AND even Samsung has them at a decent size a few years back with the A52/52S....they they make them ugly af starting A53
Now I see what Apple is doing, they're keeping phones like the iPhone 12 and 13 on sale to cannibalize midrange Android phones like these.
The problem is that there's 100s of midrange Androids to choose from. Not forgetting either that most of them have headphone jacks and SD card support.
The a7's r gone and soon a5's will have to go down in price or offer more. So apple is doing a good thing by adding more pressure
A55 or iphone 12?
Ooh, interesting choice. Something of a preference test in some regards -- if you prefer Android or iOS go that way -- but the 12 is getting on in iOS terms, where the A55 is newer; I'd probably go for the 12 if it was actually new stock, be a little more wary if refurbished/second hand.
The s23 fe should've been the a55
Just spend the extra $100 or so and get the regular S24.. WAYYYY worth it
If that price held, for sure -- I suspect you're mistaking US and Australian prices there, because I've not seen the S24 at $799 AUD anywhere at all. At rough conversion rates, you're talking maybe $450 USD (though I don't believe Samsung US has any plans to release it there to speak of).

" if you want an edge to edge screen from Samsung, you got to spend more money." Not necessarily, you could buy an s22 or an s23 on the resale market for the same price as an a55.
Fair, I probably should have made it clear that I was talking about new phones there. With refurbs you can save money and/or get something better, but it's 100% similar to buying a second-hand car -- you could also be buying a lot of wear and tear, especially on the battery.
@@AlexKidman I think the dangers of second can be reduced significantly by buying from accredited sellers who actually test out the phones to make sure that they are in good condition
For God's sake not for 700 dollars
No phone is "great". A55 is excellent for price and features.
😂😂😂😂Good but not Great??? Right now this phone is 300 euros brand new in stores...the best midrange by a mile at this price...yeahhh, it's a Great Phone
I have the galaxy s24 ultra for my main and a A53 for my second tbh the A53 is still just as good as this performance wise...
Performance wise.
What specific performances are you referring to?
Apps? Ph calls? Camera? Internet? Etc.
It's really not, try gaming genshin or something and you'll see the truth. It's not even close
There are no actual reason for Samsung making so huge bezels either than being a-holes.
A-holes?
That's a bit OTT and aggressive.
They do also make Samsung models that don't have huge bezels. So choose them instead, if that's your preference.
It's a mid-range phone. Of course it's not great.
Mid-range phones can be great within their price bracket -- right now I'd afford that accolade to the Pixel 7a for example, because it's great value for what you get. By comparison, the A55 is merely good, but doesn't jump (within the mid-range, comparing like with like) into the great bracket based on my testing.
@@AlexKidmanI think pixel phones r like an anomaly and don't represent mid range, they are more like flagship killers
