You need to do a new video on Megaman, this one doesn't have that much. These games deserve more! thanks.
Why don’t you make one
@@EnjoySackLunch not everyone knows how to edit videos.. I do youtube videos & I sure wish I knew how to do more than basic editing....
@@Gameboy-Unboxings well maybe one should think about the labor intensiveness of creating content here before just randomly just shouting out demands on what “needs” to be made?
And correct that line about Inafune being the creator of Mega Man.
@@EnjoySackLunch that's true. I retract my previous statement.
Now that it's been a near-decade later, I'd love to see you do this video again, using all the techniques you've learned since!
... but this was awesome!
agreed, maybe time for a HD reboot!
Even during these old shows you made, all the present features that make this channel neat are present. Nice to look back and see how far you've come.
You forgot to mention that ProtoMan is also known as Blues in Japan when you were mentions the characters with a Musical connection.
I didn't even know about that one. In fact, I've never heard anyone talk about it. Nice info!
No problem.
Rush may also be a nod to the rock band of the same name
Whereas 'X' and 'Zero' can be tied to programming references, and Sigma is one of the letters in the Greek alphabet. Doppler...is an obvious throwback to the inventor of radar and weather forecasting as we knew it back in the 1990s.
When I think of the 'X' generation, I think of Isaac Asimov's 'I, Robot' gone horribly awry. Far worse than the movie adaptation by story telling standards.
But in lieu of this, having X as a potential protagonist in 'I, Robot' would of made the storyline interesting since VIKI's neural pathways are made of the same material (?) that powers the X-Buster...
John McHenry But Proto...
This reminds me of a PBS show during the 1980s.. yet I cant..stop... watching..........
Right? The cheesy camp is part of the charm for me. I'm hooked.
More like the mid-90's IMO. But nonetheless...
I thought Norman was about to go AVGN when describing the cover art. 😂
You should check out the European box art for Mega Man, it looks like a blockbuster movie poster. It's awesome.
Still weird, but in an awesome way! I like how the later games are the same layout and characters but in a more accurate art style.
This video turns a decade old this October. Happy birthday to a good old video!
Do you plan on going back and doing a more in depth one
aspetty rite just when it starting getting interesting it was over
A follow up that goes more in depth would be terrific. Concur.
I was surprised at how short this was and didn't seem to go into as much depth as your other videos. Perhaps breaking up some of the versions? For example what prompted the character's reinvention in the X and Battle Network games as well as the impact it had on those consoles.
It would be perfect for the 10 year anniversary of this video
This would be great to redo. Especially since it’s so dated
Your videos' quality has improved over the years.
no shit sherlock
Mo lol
Yeah I was like man this video isnt nearly as good as the first one of his I watched then I saw this one was made in 2009. What a difference 11 years makes
Gotta say, I feel like this episode is incomplete
Same
Enzo Etz it’s ten years old, of corse it’s incomplete.
@@vectorandcinderace9844 ok
I grew up in the 8 bit era (born in 84) so I lived to see the evolution of gaming from 8 bit to what it is today. Great time to be alive for gaming.
I know this is pretty old but Inafune only created the character designs and even that is inaccurate because the same Inafune admited that he only did halg of the job since when he arrived the development team they were already making the designs of half of the cast. He didn't create anything else besides that.
After the director of the first two games decided to leave then Inafune took control of the franchise sonto speak.
Interesting
almarin davidhi It's nothing elaborated. I knew it beforehand and it is on the Wikipedia too.
Thanks
Smash brothers music.
HE PREDICTED IT
Tom Franzese LOL Me too.
That's Zelda music....had me confused tbh since megaman's soundtrack is iconic, he even said it in the video!
I still remember my parents letting me rent MM2 back in 1991. By the time MMX came out it completely blew my mind!
Broo. I just got into your channel this year and going back to this phase is brutal! But glad to see your roots. You did an awesome job. And still continue to do so! Thanks for always sharing.
i think the japanese cover art for rockman was too cutesy for american audiences, like how kirby is always angry looking on american box art
chibii honestly I prefer the rockman look. I started with MegaMan 3
That megaman 2 cover art is the stuff of nightmares though, I can see that having caused quite a few childhood traumas.
Apparently, anime on game carts wasn't marketable for the American audience.
I found this channel through the "Punchout" video. It was so thorough well made and the featurette length of it was absolutely awesome. This Mega Man video needs a remake. Please give us the mega man history the way should be told.
I just started getting into your awesome documentaries. This is one of the oldest ones of yours I've seen. Holy crap, you look SO different.
As a bassist, I've always loved Bass and Treble, and to be bluntly honest, that was the only reason I started playing Mega Man; just for that subtle hint. :)
its just sad that now Capcom abandoned megaman and their fans...
i'm still sad about the cancelation of Megaman Legends 3... i was going to buy a 3ds just for that game...
Probably because they didn't want another X6.
capcom abandoned mega man but his creator did not well kinda
check out mighty number nine or gunvolt
There are multiple reasons for that. First the series has been selling less and less. The second info that is not publicly released is that they also want to avoid disputes with Keiji Inafune and Akira Kitamura. They both are credited with Megaman's creation. Rather than risk being sued by either of them, they would rather not make another Megaman game with that possibility in mind. They are a company after all, profits above all else. :(
Thalesperes mega man 11 is coming you can't kill a legend
I only play Mega Man on NES or Game Boy. I hate the graphics of the SNES games and all other releases. Even the Sega Mega Man games!
It’s so cool watching the evolution of your videos, thanks for all the great work!
I have been watching your show, or mini documentaries. I wanted to say, this is a quality production.
This episode is definitely one that needs to be revisited. I think Megaman could be at LEAST a long episode if not two or three (one for the music, one for the gameplay mechanics, and one for the spinoffs like Megaman X).
the not-megaman on the us art looks constipated and is ready to dump some logs right then and there
Those bad Mega Man cover art reminds me of this nonsensical poster of an english version of Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind called Warriors of the Wind. That poster was stupid and didn't even make sense compared to the movie.
Have you seen the poster of the movie yourself? Also, what is 'Murica?
+Spyder Soup Yes, I've seen the poster. And 'Murica is America (with a southern accent)
I see, at least America does respect Japanese art and anime nowadays.
+Spyder Soup That's very true
Glad YT TV recommended this and I wish I woulda seen this back when it came out.
But yes, an updated video would be awesome as well.
I always thought that Megaman might possibly was inspired by Astro Boy.
hackerp49 Mega Man was originally going to be a licensed Astro Boy game, apparently, so you're right.
hackerp49 Astro Boy?!?? Ughhh
Rockman is one of five reasons why I remembered Astroboy in October 31, 2021 after 2014.
This video got me into megaman as a kid I was obsessed with the blue bomber I looked up stuff on the classic games the MMx games battle network, I got Starforce 3 for my birthday
I even watched Captain N and the weird ruby spears cartoon
2009 Good times Good times
i love these vids, so informational. keep up the good work
Why am i getting a 10 yr old video in my recommended.... I'll still watch it tho
Been watching ur channel all week!!! I been having a shitty week but ur videos have helped me
I feel so old right now....
This is an incredible channel, awesome work since then man, all the videos are great 😄
I just love those historical phrases you put at the beginning of your video mcfrosticle
I could listen to this guy all day 😁
I once read an interview with Keiji Inafune where the interviewer asked which was worse, the Mega Man box art or the Titanic disaster. His replied that at least the Titanic had some survivors...
Man your videos have come a long way.
Excellent video, mega man is one of my all time favorite capcom characters along with Ryu from street fighter
My discovery of Mega Man was accidental. I was maybe about 11 years old. I asked my mom to take me to Blockbuster Video to rent a Nintendo game and they had basically nothing left on the shelf that day other than this game. The cover art looked like utter crap! I didn't want to play a game about an old man in home-made armor, on a futuristic tropical island! But, it was this or I was going home with nothing. One of the best gambles I ever made in my life!
I love your videos of gaming history, but please do more in-depth ones like the Wolfenstein, Star Fox (I never knew about Star Fox 2), Sonic! Keep up the good work!
Have you thought about doing updated versions? I personally love this video, but now have great production value and quality. I guess, I'm saying I'd enjoy a remake. Although, I also udnerstand moving on to new stuff.
0:43
That thing gives me the creeps (and THAT "thing" is "Mega-Man")
Hoping you would do an updated and more detailed video about Mega Man. Your videos are awesome! 👍
Also, I can almost see you channel AVGN and say "What were they thinking?!?" when you were looking at the box art. 😂
keep these coming man, they are the best
this is an old comment
Mega Man 7 is one the hardest games I've ever played, but so much fun when you advance in it.
I find myself humming tunes from the Mega Man games often. Very catchy, defined music. My favorite: Shadow Man level in MM 3
I believe we got a box art different from both Japan and America in the European countries. As I remember it, it was pretty cool :)
That is a very good opening quote, it is also one of the reasons that i encourage people to have an interest in history.
The outro having Zelda music on a Megaman video hurt me in ways I cant express
Only seeing this now.
it's almost a DECADE old!
Keiji Inafune is not the creator of Mega Man, he has made that statement himself.
He only made the final design for Rock for the original game, before taking over starting with 2. He basically removed the more complicated details that made Rock look even more like Astro Boy than he already does.
This episode just begs to be remade
If I'm not entirely wrong, the reason Capcom had to rename Rockman was that name was already copyrighted for the US market by a Boulder Dash clone made for the Commodore 16 and VIC-20 a few years before and that was the main reason for the name change.
You've come a long way.
Fun fact: the megaman 3 cover art is the funniest by far, because megaman is shooting laser at sparkmans crotch and he's looking straight at it
I know this video is 6-years-old, but here are some facts I know:
1) The box art is the unholy child of an era where the traditional anime/manga style from Japan was just confusing to the US audience and d00dz with gunz were the standard. Just look at the staggering amount of 8 and 16-bit era cool manga-style art that actually matched the in-game graphics that became deformed abominations in the west.
2) Capcom didn't greenlit Rockman 2 until it was way under development. Inafune and some other members of the staff worked after-hours and showed a half-done sequel to the higher-ups.
You know I remember watching a bonus video they had on the mega man anniversary game. They talked about the cover art and how it was actually done over night to met the deadline.
I'm new to your videos so I'm not sure if this is a thing you do. But I liked how you stood by your Phi Alpha Theta framed recognition. Another wink wink for history.
I love this! i wish it was longer. Mega Man has such a huge universe
In the last issue of Game Informer (issue 238), there is an article on the Mega Man franchise. It says that Inafune attributes the bad sales of the first Mega Man to the horrible box art. It's a good thing that when I was a kid, I looked at the BACK of the box and got the game. It was amazing! I didn't realize you could use the boss's weapons until my friend figured it out, though.
Please go back and remake this in glorious HD!
I find it somewhat ironic to put video of an 8-bit game in HD! 😄
I know, I'm sure you mean the rest of the video as a whole.
I'm just being a smartass while watching this on a Galaxy S7 with a cracked screen through someone else's prescription glasses. 🤔
I love you vids, man. I was wondering tho. How do you play all the music different tracks from games in your videos? Do you have to pay royalties or is it something else? Hope you get back to me. Thanks.
These are awesome, keep up the good work
the music was also what made mm great !!
I love you Gaming Historian
understand where the information coming from decades ago. but contrary to popular belief, mega man was actually created by akira kitamura.
If you look at the cover art for both Mega Man and Mega Man 2, it's obvious that Mega Man didn't originally have an arm cannon and that he was originally supposed to be using a handgun. However, because the bullet sprites were so large, it resulted in people perceiving it, as if he was shooting from an arm cannon. This is likely why they ultimately updated the cover art in Mega Man 3 (which makes it appear as if this was always the idea).
ok Norman, we need a more in-depth video of this story
good video. i remember what a sence of scope it gave the game to pick what bosses you wanted to attack. how hardcore was megaman? he picks a dude off a chart and then home invades him, murders him, and takes his powers.
You got so many facts wrong. Mega Man was blue because of personality said by Akira Kitamora. And Akira Kitamora created Mega Man. Even Keji Inafune said Mega Man's design was already created when he joined Capcom.
Megaman is my favorite game series and it like has the best music of litteraly on the nes
Great video, also the European megaman 2 box art is very interesting
"I want the actual HISTORY of Mega Man."
*Liked*
*Subbed*
OK so I know this is am old video but I kinda just discovered your channel. I can explain the box art for part 2.
I met the artist who did the box art and he said the play testers showed him the game and he asked what megaman was using to kill the robots and the play tester didn't know and said a gun. So the artist drew him with a gun.
Also you need to do a more in depth video on this franchise. It's my favorite and your in depth videos like super Mario world are some of my favorite would love to see a new megaman video game
Mega Man 1 and MEga Man 2's box art basically showed you that they didn't believe in the character enough to simply put the Mega Man animation on the box cover. Nor did they understand you can shoot people with an arm cannon rather than a 45.
Here from the "What facts did I get wrong video?" Yeah you can feel the AVGN influence. It's not unwatchable, but a remake wouldn't hurt.
The music at the start of the episode makes me think you should do an episode on hudson soft
Rock / Man, brother of Blues, brother of Roll.
Rush is the Dog. The cat is named Tango. The Bird, is Beat.
Bass and Treble are named Forte and Gospel in the Japanese version.
The only ones not named after music genres to my knowledge is Eddie and Auto.
Rockman, Paperman, and Scissorsman...the eternal struggle is real.
You are full of great information. Any chance we could see Seaman? Keep up the good work.
Wow your are a great commenter guy.
*you are
Sorry auto correct
Hey buddy. Don't even worry about the auto correct. We all know what you mean and we all make mistakes. Now get out there and have a super day.
I agree with several other commenters that you should revisit this topic and give us an updated take on the history of Mega Man.
yep, gotta love the tropical background and Tron outfit :-P
mega man III is just WOW ill never forget this game
In the Megaman X 5, for those who didn't know, the villains take the names of Guns 'n Roses members such as Grizley 'Slash' 'Duff' McWhalen, 'Squid 'Adler' 'Izzy' Glow and "Axl'e the Red. The Megaman series as a whole may be my favorite, next to The Legend of Zelda, not only for the awesome gameplay, but it's music base. Here's hoping Inafune does good with Mighty No. 9!
Not to mention that Inafune intended to make this the last Megaman X game for the series and start with Megaman Zero.
what is the opening music from?
You need to update this, you’re giving inafune WAY too much credit.
Wait a sec... It sold more than EXPECTED, but was not the huge hit capcom THOUGHT it might become?? WHAT???
Yeah that was unclear
Wait a second... Mega-Man has been in more than 100 video games? Isn't that more than even Mario has been in?
No way. Mario has starred in tons of sports game and party games.
Wait, Roll was Megaman's *sister?* There goes that Battle Network ship.
The Mega Man 1 box art might be trying to resemble one of the color changes from the robot master weapons, but still, why the heck does he have a pistol? He doesn't even shoot bullets! He shoots lemons!
great topic sharp execution as per usual
Aside from the first game's cover art, which was badly drawn for a professional piece of artwork, I think those 'realistic' depictions are brilliant in a silly fun sort of way. I actually loved MegaMan 1's art too as a child; I only owned the first game and never understood why it looked nothing whatsoever like the game. It was like if Super Mario Bros had a picture of realistic men kicking turtles on the box, it made me wonder if that was what it al looked like "to the characters".
Great vid.
Great video! Keep up the good work
Woah I didn't even know these videos went this far back 😂.
I have 23 different NES games. Including Megaman 1-5. I can honestly say I spend more time with those 5 games than all the rest including all the games I borrowed. I don't want to know how many hours of my life I spent on them but I still love me some Megaman !
please do an nintendo world championship 1990 episode
You should do an update on this episode.
I grew up with it under the original name of Rockman. I still prefer that over the Megaman name.
"Please Rate and Subscribe"
Blast to the (not so far back) past!
I think you should look up the EU-cover art for Megaman 1. It's quite a significant difference compared to the American one and I was surprised that you did not include that one.
