Experimenting with EMS VCS3 MkII

- Experimenting and discovering new and different sounds on an EMS VCS3 mkII synthi.
The rhythmical pattern is created with the noise generator into envelope section. The "Off" control is round at about 1, so the envelope section is opening and closing very quickly. Osc 1 is then set relatively low creating a "click" sound that I managed to tune/sync with the envelope section so it happens once every three times the envelope opens.
Osc 3 is controlling the filter frequency. By adjusting the response, it self oscillates to create some nice effects/sounds. The square wave of osc3 is controlling the reverb mix.
The outputs of the reverb mix are fed to the the main outputs separately which lets it feedback on itself which can be adjusted with the level/mix controls.
Osc 2 is controlled by the DK2 keyboard, set to cv and is fed into input 1 of the synthi. The input amplifier had to be adjusted to tune the keyboard! At 0, every note on the keyboard sounds the same pitch and at 100 the intervals between each key are much greater than a semitone! The range of the keyboard can then be adjusted with the oscillator control. - And this only makes it mono phonic! The whole process can be done again with a second input amplifier and another oscillator. More practice is needed on that one at present as it takes me about half an hour to set that up!
Thanks for your interest
The best sound effects generator ever. (For me also the best SYNTH ever).
Good performance, there are infinite sounds inside that great instument
good description... I've used the CV input #1 to make each half step on the dk1 = to a whole step & CV input #2 to make each half step = to a minor 3rd. Lots of flute-like overtones
Such an amazing instrument.
Thanks for the break down, very helpful/inspiring.
Nice sounds.
that was tasty to my ears
Nice work. I'd love 6 hours alone with a Putney....... infact my desert island disk luxury would include one ( amongst the other synthesis machines in the enourmous warehouse and the square 100 metres of solar panels... :) )
Men... this sounds amazing
Thanks, more to follow soon
LOL ...
I'm really envious of you, I have a decent vintage synth collection of 19 synths & I'd love to add your VCS3 to my collection.
Although nothing is like the real thing, I amI considered building a VCS3 clone although those patch panels are super-expensive.
I did clone several sections of the VCS3 for my modular synth: the Diode Ladder VCF, the trapezoid generator, & the VCA. This allows me to do a very convincing version of "On The Run. I just need to clone those oscillators next..
great
Haven't done as of yet, maybe I should lend it to him - he might find some gun shot sounds in there or find a patch to mimic the final whimpers of a fatally injured fawn.
fuck.... i need this!
that's what I was going for!
@stomachlining Thanks for the post, thats an interesting idea, I'll try that out!
- Before I had it restored, I had little hope for the keyboard! A lot of the connections were faulty and what did work seemed useless and impossible!
I had input 1 modified to a ten-turn-pot to try to make it easier to tune. Also had the oscillators stabilised.
Really glad they got the keyboard all sorted out - It's a great addition to an amazing instrument!
Have you got any mods on yours?
Watch you don't hit notes by accident leaning over the keyboard like that! Then again sometimes that can sound amazing, I WANT ONE!!!!!!!
@nuggetonline no, but I suffer from mod-envy
no relation to Ted then ?
Do you ever let "Uncle Ted" borrow your VCS3?
Whats a fare price for it with the keyboard? thanks

Well, if you've got the money, you can buy the VCS3A that;s on sale on Ebay for $24,995.00.
You don't have to hurry though as the sale doesn't end until 12/18/2015
+ruben peralta about 7 thousand U.S. dollars if you want a new one but you will be put on a waiting list for about 2-3 years before you receive it. ( without keyboard )
+TRIGUN 2-3 years? more like 6 or 7 if you're lucky ;)

do you work out?
No bicep curls or barbell rows needed, just buy a VCS3 - bodybuilding's best kept secret.
