Replace Honda Accord Tail Light Assembly (2006 And Newer)

  • I show how to remove/install a tail light assembly on a Honda Accord. Honda switched to LED tail lights starting in 2006. My car in the video is a 2006 Honda Accord sedan. Other models/years of Accords may be a little different, but the basic process is the same. This will probably also apply to Honda Civics.
A couple lines of LEDs on my passenger side tailight had stopped working and I was going to fail my state inspection. The process of replacing the tail light assembly involves removing the bumper cover, or at least partially disconnecting it. Unlike older Honda where you could just replace a bulb, on these newer Honda, you are forced the replace the whole thing.

Thanks for all of the detail, but it can be done without taking the bumper off. Follow the same instructions for the inside of the trunk, but instead of taking the bumper off, just use a 10MM socket and your arm easily fits behind the bumper to take the two bolts out that hold the bracket.

The only thing is there is a metal flap a attached to the taillight that goes back behind the bumper cover. If you don't remove the number, the light is almost impossible to take off

Have to agree with Nicholas. For a 2006 Accord, you have to unscrew the light from the bracket from underneath. You also have to remove the two bolts in order to wedge the bumper down enough to remove the light. You have to remove the screw and bolts by feel as you can’t see them because your arm will be in the way. Good luck trying to align the screw and bolts blindly to reinstall. Honestly, it’s so much easier and faster to remove the bumper like RJ shows: just 3 screws and a nut.

Thanks for taking the time to make this video. I just replaced the tail light assembly this morning on a 2007 Accord. I would not have tackled this otherwise.
Since my issue was with a cracked lens (preventing the car from passing inspection) I ordered the assembly "shell" without the LEDs and used the old "guts" in the new assembly. The shell cost me around $65. I didn't spend very much time shopping, but some online sites wanted around $150 for a complete assembly.
I absolutely hate the plastic push pins/rivets. IMO they're not made to be removed and reused. I've had them break on me many times. Fortunately, the pin under the rear section of the bumper came out relatively unscathed and popped back in fine. I can't understand why a plastic pin would be used in place of a metal screw.
The screw holding the liner is also crap. It's plastic and the groves are very tiny and shallow, so it's easy to damage it when putting it back. I wasn't able to snug it down, but hey, it's just holding a trunk liner.
I also struggled with unplugging the incandescent bulb and wiring harness. The plastic flanges used to protect those connections also make it very difficult disconnect them, because they also obscure your view.
As someone else here said, why does Honda integrate the assembly into the car? It looks cool, but IMO it's another reason why labor costs for maintenance on vehicles are ridiculous.

Thanks for posting. A couple of things. If you pull the bumper too far away it’s a pain in the neck to put back on. If you aren’t able to put it back on take its off totally, two clips underneath the car. Also I had a leak which appears to be coming from the gasket surrounding the headlights. Know issue and my car is 18 years old. You can buy replacement gaskets, much less than replacing the headlights themselves. Other option is to try shin etsu grease. This is made by Honda. It actually helps to restore rubber (I’m trying it) about $20 for the grease. Replacement gaskets are somewhere around $30.
Also for others on here a car upholstery remover is invaluable. Great to remove the plastic pins.

(Maybe don't totally remove the little mud flap. I think it's better to leave that third screw pointing back in and just let the mud flap stay where it is while replacing the light(s).

Thanks RJ. Followed your video for my 2006 Accord and it made a daunting task easy. I’ve seen some posts here saying that you don’t have to remove the bumper. Theoretically, you don’t have to, but aligning the bolts when reinstalling is next to impossible. It’s much easier and quicker to remove the bumper like RJ shows: 3 screws and one nut to remove the bumper. Bumper snaps right off and back into place, just like the video shows.

Hi. Great video. I'm having trouble figuring out which is the turn signal bulb. Is it part of the led board? I have no battery in the car but I know when it has one the drivers side just doesn't work. It doesn't flash on the dash, doesn't click and the lights just don't come on even in hazard mode. Tried replacing the switch but I have the same issue and I can't find a separate fuse for the left turn signal. Thanks!

Where did you purchase the light assembly? I have a 2007 Honda accord with a broken lens. I ordered what I thought was the correct one from ebay, however, it was not the full assembly with the lights. No lights were in them.

    • @RJTheBikeGuy
      @RJTheBikeGuy  9 років тому +1

+Linda Souza Yeah, I have seen that. You can transfer the insides from the old one, to the new lens assembly. I got my taillight from a auto salvage place. It was the whole assembly. But the lens had a small broken corner. But the lens assembly on my original light was not cracked (just the LEDs were not working right), so I transferred the insides from the taillight I bought, to the old lens assembly, and installed that.
