When Sonny was here in AZ w the YavCo charter I played several shows for him , his anniversaries, and his birthdays before he went back to Oakland. He was always very gracious to me and loved my old school country music I play w my band. He definitely had an amazing presence, a Born leader and cool dude.
I agree with you that Sonny Barger had a significant impact on how MC’s operate today. Someone you’ve not covered that I also feel has brought a lot of positivity especially in the 1%er world is Scott “Junior” Erickson.
@@DemonsRow check out the book “The Unknown Mongol”. Junior was the National president of the Mongols twice, and even managed to negotiate a truce between them and 81 back in the day.
If I were to build a Mt. Rushmore of influential bikers, I would have to add David Mann to it. As I was growing up I cant remember not walking in to the home of friends or family members and not seeing at least 1 of his pieces of art. His art work painted a real picture of the motorcycle culture. May he Rest in Peace.
I was fortunate enough to have been one of the lawyers for The Grateful Dead for around 13 years in the 80’s & 90’s. That relationship introduced me to the Oakland HA & Sonny through their pre-existing relationship with The Dead (HA were Security at Altamonte etc). Sonny has always been a heavy weight in the Biker World. It doesn’t take too long to figure that out. I remember his retirement run to Arizona through LA.
Met evil k in mariloma (sp) likable fella he was doing time for hitting a jerk reporter with a baseball bat, I remember him saying once while making atemp at Grand Canyon and said something nasty about 1 percenters, lost respect for him from that statement
I know that I will get slam for this but the one that inspired me about motorcycles is Evel Knievel. He is know longer with us but he was a legend in his own right. Okay he broke just about every bone in his body but you have to admire his courage and never give up attitude.
Me and my friends smashed ourselves on our huffy bikes with plywood jumps every time “ABC’s Wide World of Sports “ broadcast a jump. My buddy lost his front teeth and I got 9 stitches on my forehead lol.

Sonny is a huge influence on the lifestyle and deserves hella respect. His life story speaks for itself. David Mann and his paintings of the lifestyle have influenced countless people. He didn't just paint it though, he lived it. This i know is a personal thing but my dad is one to me. He started a MC right after getting back from Nam. It's still together after 50 years. My dad and 2 other people had embraced the culture and had enough influence to bring another 100 club brothers along. It's not easy being president and dealing with MC politics and keeping 100 other like minded individuals in line. When I say in line I mean out of jail, sometimes even keeping them alive but always from fucking up. The photographers that were around taking black and white photos in the 50s and 60s were heavily influential to me. Those biker photos from some of the older clubs are just the fucking coolest ever. They truly bring out something inside and absolutely make you want to get on a bike. The people taking those photos then had no idea how important they are now by showing where it started.
It’s crazy, I randomly went down the OMC rabbit hole just yesterday because UA-cam suggested me a video about the Hells Angels (because they’ve fascinated me over the years) and as such I came across your channel. And then, just today a legend of the culture Sonny Barger dies. Maybe there was something in the air that drew me to this topic at this time. Needless to say, RIP Sonny. We’ve lost a true American original.
Growing up in the East Bay down the road from Oakland in 60's, we all knew who Sonny Barger was and the Hells Angles. We chopped our Schwinn Stingray's and made cuts out of our t-shirts and rode around town like badasses. Our parents were horrified and put a stop to that. Funny looking back. Good times.
#Ghostin my Favorite on so far along with Evel Knievel & Hulk Hogan & #JesseVentura another legend - there are so many it's hard to name one without naming another and another - keep bringing the fire Bro
I have watched a variety of your videos the last couple of days. Not really binging, but maybe the next step down. It has been very educational, and I even subscribed to the channel. I knew a little about the biker culture, but admittedly most of what I knew came from biased sources. I have also known quite a few bikers through the years, some of true stand up people. Most of my contact came when I worked a small convenient store right across the street from a biker bar in Roseburg, Oregon. That was a little over 30 years ago, I rather miss those days.
Jesse Ventura was a (MONGOLS) Member before becoming American politician, actor, television presenter, political commentator, author, and retired professional wrestler.
You should do a thing on Donny Petersen (The Canadian Sonny BARGER.) he was an Hamc member and was the national spokesperson for HAMC when his club the para dice riders MC patched over to the HAMC in 2000 and took over Ontario and Canada and he was an award winning author of Many books and was considered the encyclopedia of motorcycles as he was a technician and owned heavy duty cycles in Toronto.!! @Sose
A true Mentor, natural born leader, and genuine original, his written account of his lifetime experience’s have rendered him as only one of the best life Teacher’s of the Era,
LLH&R to all of the 81 for their loss and respects to you Mr Barger. You were an American legend to be sure solid start to finish the real deal. Great leader of men legends live on even after their death. Gone but never forgotten. May he rest in peace and my deepest condolences to all his brothers friends and family He was a great man.
#Ghostin Great vid Sose. I read(listened on Audible) Sonny’s book and it was eye opening for sure. You’ll definitely learn from one of the founding fathers. But you asked about Heavy Weights…you did a vid on Robert Patrick of the Boozefighters Ch.101 but have you read up on the founder of the Boozefighters? Wino Willy Forkner was one of the founders and in my opinion one of the first cultural icons. The article about 99% vs 1% of motorcycle enthusiasts was written after the Hollister “riots” in 1947. Wino was not allowed to enter the races because they had partaken in a few drinks so they began racing up and down the streets of Hollister. There’s a lot more to it but it’s a good read I assure you. Unfortunately Wino passed in 1997 but to me I feel he was and will always be the original outlaw before there was such a thing.
Most deff Sonny is a legend,we have 3 of his last few books,1 is autographed. Also at a book signing I got to bond w/Sonny for about 5mins over horses & get a picture w/him. One thing I learned from his books is when you have an important meeting to always be prepared. Itz always hard to get to speak or get a photo w/him cause he is usually surrounded by ppl waiting to greet him. A few yrs ago i was at 1 of his big B'day parties, that same wkend the Blue Angels were in SF for their yearly air show & flew over the club house in Oakland. In all the years I've lived in SF which is most of my life I've never seen the Blue Angels fly over Oakland,I believe that was for Sonny. L&R #WeGhostN

Some inspiration for the ladies...Bessie Stringfield, first black woman to ride solo across the U.S. on a Harley...in 1930-40s ! And this guy, Dave Barr, holds the distinction of being: the first person to have ridden a Harley-Davidson Motorcycle around the world, (across Europe, Russia, and Siberia in the dead of winter) He also served in active duty in the U.S. Marine Corps in Vietnam and also served in the armed forces of three other nations. He's also a double amputee. Thats a heavy weight !
I would say Tobie Gene Levingston. The East Bay Dragons MC are exclusive to Oakland. However, everyone from the East Coast all the way to Japan know who they are. That's a sign of a strong reputation. As far as a bike builder, I recommend the OG from South Central (apologies, I can't recall his name) who started the raked out chopper craze. Choppers are synonymous with biker culture. He and the black biker set still doesn't get the recognition they deserve. If someone in the comments knows who I'm talking about please reply with his name. I believe his son has carried the tradition too if I'm not mistaken. Keep pumping out the content. Ghostin. I got to meet a talk with Sonny at West Coast Internation Motorcycle Show. Not for very long because like in this picture, he was surrounded by many! Naturally he wanted to know about my bike? My 86' Yamaha Venture Royale just placed 3rd out of 168 bike show in Washington, so I was invited to show bike in this motor cycle show! (They gave each bike entered in show a limited printed poster of Marlon Brandon on bike with trophy tied too handlebars!)(I still have it, haha!) Enjoy visit with Sonny!
My Dad who ran a club for 24 years and raced harleys and my thoughts are the old school clubs know what the hell is going on too any clubs from today have no club I been robbed by my own so called brothers 💔 my heart to see what happened to the clubs no all but a lot I had to walk away I couldn't deal with the bullshit anymore I have respect for many club but not all.
Bruce "The Dude" Gale started the Sons of Silence. JR Reed from the Sons definitely deserves to be mentioned in the talks of the Mt Rushmore of MC culture.
When I think of heavyweights Sonny is first to come to mind down here in TX we all know about Chambers and Taco was a heavy weight....every club has their founder but Sonny still alive and well sitting on 2s....so yeah to me he the biggest MC heavyweight. He brought in so many things to this culture and the 81 I respect cause of all the legal stuff they've done to solidify the HA.....salute Sose great video
Great video man Sonny is a legendGotta give a shout out to Sunny and Evel Knievel, up here in Canada we got a different Mount Rushmore I'd say in terms of influence in the country. Ps normally I would not write a long comment like this but your question intrigued me. 1. Walter Stadnick(definitely a MC heavyweight, former National President of the Hells Angels in Canada, by far the most influential, and was responsible for expanding the Hells Angels into all Canadian provinces except for one, multiple other deeds are note worthy.) 2.Bernie Guindon (founder and longtime President of the Canadian Satan's choice, which was once the second largest Club in the World behind the 81) 3.Yves Buteau (former President of the Popeyes Motorcycle Club, facilitated the opening of the first Hells Angels chapter in Canada and was a key figure in the Satan's Choice Popeyes conflict in the 70s) 4.Joseph Baribeau (Canadian Motorcycle racing legend) Dishonorable mention: Yves Trudeau (former Hells Angel and former Popeyes MC member, notorious Canadian serial killer turned government informant, killed 43 ppl, his actions were extremely influential just not in a good way lol)
I can't imagine doing that kind of time. I served a 15 year sentence, by the majority was on paper- ended up doing a few years total inside. It changes a person-- you get out and realize the world has moved on without you. If I heard you correct he served over 15 inside--damn

#ghostin yes
Thats awesome tim
My Dad who ran a club for 24 years and raced harleys and my thoughts are the old school clubs know what the hell is going on too any clubs from today have no club I been robbed by my own so called brothers 💔 my heart to see what happened to the clubs no all but a lot I had to walk away I couldn't deal with the bullshit anymore I have respect for many club but not all.
I agree ive seen the same
To me the mount Rushmore of 1%ers Sonny barger, the dude (SOS), Taco Bowman and Jesus; the ultimate 1%er
The dude?
@@DemonsRow I can't remember his government name. I'm gon havta look it up. I'll hit you back later
@@DemonsRow his name is Bruce Richardson
Bruce "The Dude" Gale started the Sons of Silence. JR Reed from the Sons definitely deserves to be mentioned in the talks of the Mt Rushmore of MC culture.
🙌Praise on this episode, even before watching.🙌
Much love
When I think of heavyweights Sonny is first to come to mind down here in TX we all know about Chambers and Taco was a heavy weight....every club has their founder but Sonny still alive and well sitting on 2s....so yeah to me he the biggest MC heavyweight. He brought in so many things to this culture and the 81 I respect cause of all the legal stuff they've done to solidify the HA.....salute Sose great video
Thank you jaybird
Great video man Sonny is a legendGotta give a shout out to Sunny and Evel Knievel, up here in Canada we got a different Mount Rushmore I'd say in terms of influence in the country. Ps normally I would not write a long comment like this but your question intrigued me.
1. Walter Stadnick(definitely a MC heavyweight, former National President of the Hells Angels in Canada, by far the most influential, and was responsible for expanding the Hells Angels into all Canadian provinces except for one, multiple other deeds are note worthy.)
2.Bernie Guindon (founder and longtime President of the Canadian Satan's choice, which was once the second largest Club in the World behind the 81)
3.Yves Buteau (former President of the Popeyes Motorcycle Club, facilitated the opening of the first Hells Angels chapter in Canada and was a key figure in the Satan's Choice Popeyes conflict in the 70s)
4.Joseph Baribeau (Canadian Motorcycle racing legend)
Dishonorable mention: Yves Trudeau (former Hells Angel and former Popeyes MC member, notorious Canadian serial killer turned government informant, killed 43 ppl, his actions were extremely influential just not in a good way lol)
I did one on evil not many watchef
@@DemonsRow yeah I seen that one I liked it.

Barger is the top of the food chain of Mcs.
👊👊👊
I can't imagine doing that kind of time. I served a 15 year sentence, by the majority was on paper- ended up doing a few years total inside. It changes a person-- you get out and realize the world has moved on without you. If I heard you correct he served over 15 inside--damn
#ghostin Va Happy New Years ! B well !
#ghostin
Much love and respect! Love the knowledge you’re dropping on the masses. Sonny is def the GOAT in my opinion. Have you covered Indian Larry? He was a bad ass and his frames were legendary! Plus he was just as real as it gets! #indianlarrylegacy
ML&R Sose. STILL #GHOSTIN
