Technically it's craft ice cream. In Spanish the word is "artesanal," therefore the word gets lost in translation and we tend to make up words to try to fit the closest word with a similar meaning. However, artisan is technically not wrong either. In El Salvador, they call it artisan because it's made on a small scale by local growers or producers using simple home tools, and unique processes; they also use natural ingredients. Therefore, they're not profiting on a large scale like franchise brands. Beer for example can be an artisan. Artisan beer is called craft beer. Some people like it, some don't.
