Hydro-Sump Bog Planter for My Massive Jungle Aquarium

  • I knew I wanted to include terrestrial plants in some way when I designed this aquarium, but I wasn't sure how. There was no way I could have them out of the top of the display itself. I had to get creative. That's when I came up with the idea to create what I'm calling a Hydro-Sump. A solution that uses hydroponic or riparian plant growth to filter the aquarium. That way, the system will remain easily maintained because of the benefits provided by these plants.

Hi Tanner, one of the reasons why the stain may have come out much darker is due to sanding with a different grit between the two pieces. (Or if you didn't sand them at all) the difference between the open pore sizes in the wood can be much different. Sanding both pieces with the same final grit will help make sure the open pores in the wood are the same size which will ensure the same amount of stain gets absorbed. Hope this helps!

I agree. As much as I dislike the cliffhangers and as much as I want instant gratification (lol) these ten to fifteen minute updates are preferable to Tanner burning out or longer videos happening less often. It would be helpful to get a full series edit once all the component videos are released.

Some aquatic floating plants like mini water lettuce or red root floaters could be added to hide the baskets from view. There would be no need to keep thinning them to let light penetrate to lower plants allowing their roots to form a dense network adding greatly to the bio-filtration. Floating species do a better job than either fully terrestrial or fully aquatic plants because of the water/air interface.

I haven’t seen a Madagascar Lace “Sword” since I first started in the hobby years ago! As a young teen I had several in a tank with Melon Swords, another difficult plant to locate nowadays. The lace swords are considered a challenge to grow as bits of detritus can easily get caught in the leaves and start to deteriorate. Keeping the leaves clean and algae free along with good lighting helps ensure success.

Cool design! So the water is pumped from the sump, up to to the bog filter, and then overflows/returns back to the sump?
I will say that i love overhead filters, but they have caused most of the floods i have experienced. I think with your design, the sump should probably run dry before water makes it over the top, in the case of clogged overflows. Which is good. You want to replace the pump, not the flooring!
