  • Who’s afraid of the Big Bad AI? I’ve been having deja vu lately: my prediction is that history is about to repeat itself in a profound way. But what happens after that? Join this important conversation for image makers in the comments.
And for those who were wondering if I moonlight as Flash Gordon the thumbnail was AI generated from a clip in the video to be “futuristic”-- buckle up!

One thing I learned a long time ago was no one really cares how a work is created, other than the individual making the work.
Would Shakespeare’s plays/poems/sonnets be any different or better if he’d had available modern writing equipment rather than ink and quill? Would a typewriter or computer altered what he created? Perhaps how he created it, but I’d argue not his finished product. It doesn’t matter.
It’s not the process, but the final work that matters.
And yes in photography the process the photographer uses (digital, LF film, Polaroid, etc…) will affect the look of work. I project my still images to 6’x8’ on a wall in a darkened room.
But I’d consider my work a failure if I had people approaching me asking me, “What was your process?” (Fortunately, no one does - they are captivated by the imagery, which is what I want.)
I know my process works for me - it gives me the results I need for my intended results. But, that process is a means to an end.
Lord help me if the process ever becomes the goal.

All the things that manufacturers do to preserve integrity and authenticity of digital image (from camera or Photoshop) can, with more or less effort, be faked. This will be more and more possible in the future. So the only way for photographer to prove authorship would be to have the negative (or positive). This is how I see the future of film photography.

It’s definitely one of the minor reasons I shoot film!

The same thing happened with early photography. Early photographers had to copy what painters were doing at the time, pictorial photography was created to be taken seriously. It took a very long time for photography to be considered art in the same way as painting. Fast forward to today, yes, I have a 102 mp digital camera and I also have several Holga cameras that I use. The camera is just a tool and we choose which tool to use to capture an image. Now throw something in which is uncomfortable, AI, and we start the whole discussion all over again. Is AI cheating? Can anyone "type" in a description and create a world class image using AI? You are correct in saying the technology will improve much faster than expected, or as faster as we would want. Is this a game changer? It does feel a little disturbing that all of the hard work we put into capturing an image, then printing, can all be tone in a text command line. So I guess we will either need to buckle up, or maybe like you say, get a seat at the table. Good topic!

Ironically ai which has nothing to do with photography (ie making images in a camera) has the potential to make a lot of photographers redundant.

Let me start by reminding the Merriam-Webster definition of what photography is: the art or process of producing images by the action of radiant energy and especially light on a sensitive surface (such as film or an optical sensor)
Now with that out of the way let's talk about AI. This is no mere Reformation of an art, this is the complete introduction of something new. Our definition of photography whether it's digital or film has to result from someone walking out somewhere and pressing a button. I've never heard of any "AI Artist" calling themselves a photographer. There are distinct lines between the two categories and I personally believe that they are completely different areas. Unfortunately they both output about the same medium so inevitably there will be a clash.

AI won’t affect hobbyists who just want to take photos. People that work as wedding, event photographers won’t be affected either. Not everyone wants AI, they want real photos.
