So glad you are reacting to this, such a good movie. The fetal position is because he has a back ache, the king. If you get beck to Oslo in the summer, go and visit the Oscarsborg fortress, they do really good tours and you can stay in an hotel in the old barracks. They time the tour so that the big cruise ship from Oslo to Kiel passes just as Blucher would have done, and you can really see the scale. Incredible! Also all the soldiers on the fortress where brand new, thankfully they had that old great commander! Not the parliament, but the royal palace 😊 and yes we understand the German by subtitles and quite a lot of us learn it in school so we understand some of it. 😊 That the toy pig understand Norwegian, Swedish and Danish is significant as the king is a Danish prince and the crown prince wife is Swedish. So the childs grandfather and mother, he is the current king today, the one with the toy pig.
Norway needed a new king after splitting with Sweden in 1905, Haakon was a Danish king and Olav a prince. Haakon said yes, if the Norwegians says yes through a referendum on.. The Norwegians said yes, and he became king. He decided too, the son had to just follow..

Fun fact about German. In a pamphlet the Germans gave to the soldiers that were going to Norway, made to prepare them for Norwegian culture etc, they wrote that "Most Norwegians understand German if you speak slowly and basic German." Whilst that's not 100% true, it's not very difficult to understand many of the German words.

And that it understand English may be due to the Kings then dead wife was English (one of King Edward VII daughters, she died 1938).
So the languages that are Norwegian and from the childs grandfather, grandmother, mother (and most likely the ones he understood at the time).

Norwegian movies in general don't tend to have as high a budget as this, but in the last couple of decades there has been a number of high budget WWII movies. There was "Max Manus", "The 12th Man", the TV miniseries "The Heavy Water War" and this one, just to mention a few. Also, shot as a movie, but turned into a miniseries by Netflix, "War Sailor". It has a fictional main character, but he's sort of a composite of real stories, and I think it's also well worth watching.
There was also a period of war movies just a few years after the war ended.
Actually, I think another movie you might watch is "Hamsun", about the world famous Norwegian author who perplexed us all by siding with the Germans. Played by Max von Sydow, no less, even though that means that he speaks Swedish.

In Norway the marriage is sealed with the priest proclaiming "So shake your hands on this!". We have the wedding ring on the right hand as that's the hand that is used to seal the marriage. As for the the Kings words about being chosen, in 1905 when Norway declared independence from Sweden, there was a referendum where the choice was republic or a monarchy with Prince Carl as the new king (as King Haakon). The latter option got 79% of the votes, so he was democratically elected. Even now after each general election, there's a vote in parliament about the dissolvement of the monarchy, but the vote have never been close.

King Haakon had a really troublesome back pain, therefore you see him lying down on the floor in a fetal position.
King Haakon was elected king by the Norwegian people. Therefore he was known to never make a decision without thinking it through and always with the best interest of the people. Understandingly it may seem a little undecided at first. His son King Olav and grandson King Harald inherited this trade later on.

If your interested in more of what the Norwegian Royal Family did during the war i recomend the mini-series "Atlantic Crossing".
It takes this history a lot further, including the king`s and governments exile in London, and Marthas friendship with FDR in Washington.
Its also a high quality production, naturly much more englis in it tho.
Also the mini-series "The Heavywater War" (also about the war ofc), is to my mine the best norwegian tv production ever. (its on Netflix.. or atleast here it is..)

A no, would mean that the germans would overtake the country by massive war actions. He said afterwards that the faith of the norwegian ppl on his shoulders was painful. So, a bit of extra information.
The little boy in the red knittet jumper that travels with the king is prins Harald, our king today. He was three years old when they escaped, he is today 87 years old. It sets things in a perspective, it's not as long ago as many would believe.
The two canons that shoot at Blücher is named Aron and Moses (with a sibling named Josva, but they didn't have enough people to work it), from 1893, is made by the german company by the name of Krupp who supported the nazification of Germany and supplied their troops with weapons and ammunition both in the first world war and the second. It's a bit funny and ironic when you think about it.

It is always interesting to watch movie reactions, doubly so when it's from your country about our history.
The guy upsetting the king in the car is his son, then Crown Prince and later King Olav the 5th. He was a popular and beloved king, but he had a temper. I was lucky enough to meet the wife of a man who worked closely with Olav, and she said he could have an absolutely foul temper in private.
King Haakon the 7th was a much beloved king, and he was a good and gentle man. During the war, people in Norway painted the "H7" symbol a a show of resistance in Norway. It was a capital H with the number 7 imposed in the middle of the H. He even won the hearts of some of our communists by proclaiming that he was their king too.
Norwegian movies are, to put it mildly, a mixed bunch. Our biggest international hit of all time is "Flåklypa Grand Prix", named "The Pinchcliff Grand Prix" in english. It is an animation film with animated puppets about a bicycle repairman and inventor making his own car (Il Tempo Gigante!) to beat his former apprentice in a car race.
I can recommend "Konvoi" or "The Arctic Convoy" and "The War Sailor" if you want more good Norwegian war movies.
About Denmark, the topography of the country does not lend itself to a prolonged resistance. It is flat and ideal for motorised and armoured forces to waltz through, especially if your opponent is an army ill prepared to combat tanks. I would recommend the Danish movie "9 April" to get an understanding of how difficult it was for Denmark to defend themselves.

@@NordicReactions Norwegians love movies about as much as anyone else, I'd say. The output of domestic movies has been somewhat uneven, to put it mildly. My recommendations for Norwegian movies: "De dødes tjern" (The pond of the dead), a Norwegian horror movie from the 1950s, the aforementioned "Pinchcliffe Grand Prix", "Trolljegeren" (Trollhunter), a found footage horror comedy, "Orions belte" from 1985, a cold war thriller about three men in the Svalbard archipelago stumbling onto an illegal soviet listening post, "Fritt vilt", slasher movie set in an abandoned mountain hotel, "Død snø", zombie comedy, "Ni liv" (Nine lives), about an SOE operation that went awry, later retold in the movie "Den tolvte mann" (The twelfth man.). I can also recommend "Shetlandsgjengen", a movie about a Norwegian ferry service that made roundtrips from Shetland to Norway to drop off and pick up SOE personnel and refugees, and "Kampen om tungtvannet", an early 1950s movie about the sabotage action to deprive the germans of heavy water to be used in the development of nuclear weapons, and using a few of the real saboteurs playing themselves. Not to be confused with "The heroes of Telemark" starring Kirk Douglas.

It is a good movie, but still a simplified docudrama based upon real events. There is no doubt about Haakon‘s stance, and he was as brave and very good man. He is the main figure, but the reality was far more chaotic, nuanced and complex, as were the many political and military stances and actions taken - or not taken. These people were not the almost cardboard-like props often shown in the movie. A lot of dialogue and many meetings, conferences are recreated, some more or less invented, without very good sources.
