Sounds like it will be a fantastic series. We made the mistake of planting too many shrubs to fill the new space. We could probably use half the amount and give perennials their space too.
Hi there, I didn't deal with tip blight on my arborvitaes. Never had that problem, just read about it. I might do the research and produce video on it, it wound't be from personal experience though. Happy gardening!
Olga I wish you & UA-cam were around 17 years ago when we moved into our house! 😉 we have a small garden in the UK and I've made all the mistakes you've mentioned. Now we have a few established flowering shrubs, lots of lavender and David Austin Rose's & a couple of Naked Dawn climbers but we need some privacy from overlooking windows. My husband says dig the roses up and plant tall evergreens but I can't bare to part with them. Very much looking forward to the rest of your series. Happy gardening from Manchester England X PS Good old Monty 😉
🌻🐝☀️🌺👨🌾 I love your garden!! It’s a great inspiration to me as I am also a gardener and UA-cam creator. You put a lot of work and love into growing your garden! All the hard work is worth it to me to get to see the new growth everyday it brings me so much joy! l’m just harvesting my first fruits and veggies. I still have so much to learn and I appreciate all of m your tips, tricks that you share! Please Keep sharing! I would love to learn more about gardening from each other.
I am looking forward to this series! I garden in a smallish yard in zone 5b with several large mature trees. Gardening with all the shade and tree roots is a challenge! I've made the mistakes you mention - buying lots of fun plants without a plan, and also giving up and neglecting the garden for several years. Starting again with more knowledge this time!
I have a smaller garden and I still have landscapers come in & handle the mulching for me. I have beds around the backyard, on the side of the house, & in the front of the house, so it just makes sense for them to handle that part in Spring & Autumn while I care for the plants the rest of the year.
Quick question regarding the 7:54 segment Olga: are you opposed to mixed screen borders? They offer an opportunity to grow a great variety of shrubs and trees on a small lot, and the bonus is that if you have, say, an arborvitae that dies, you won't have a gaping hole in your living fence. It can easily be replaced with another tree or shrub you've developed an interest in while satisfying the need to collect a variety of plants. That being said, a mixed screen does not provide the formal/european garden that looks to be your personal style. It's a beautiful style, I just think there is a time and place for eclectic-style gardens on small lots that are just as peaceful and inviting. What are your thoughts on this?
I see the point of growing mixed hedge. I am not opposed to it. I am used to homogeneous hedges here in US, but when I travel in Europe, those hedges grow on me. Plus your point of substitution of dead plant for a different one in a mixed hedge is great.
This is a very inspiring series. Thank you for bringing us such great ideas. I think another important thing to consider when planting a garden is how the sun is in your garden. For example, my smallish backyard has a section that is almost completely in the shade most of the day and has another section that has sun all day long. I have done exactly what you said, for many years I was intimidated by the placement of the plants. However, I am venturing out and trying new things in the garden. I started the rose garden with 5 David Austin roses and am loving it. I want to add lavender and herbs to another part of the garden. Very excited about this journey.
We moved in our home almost two years ago and I’m trying to create some privacy also because my neighbors are very noisy. They stand in their kitchen window and look as if they never see people before. I made a nice garden but it will take some time before it reaches maturity. Great video.
I too wish you and YT were around 20 years ago. I'm in my mid 50's and JUST NOW starting to garden. Why, well, because of what you said. Didn't know where to begin, so I did nothing. Now I'm looking at blank slate and don't know where to begin. What is your advice for FAST growing garden space? What would you do first if you were in my situation? Many thanks XO
Stay tuned, I have friends who are in your shoes. In my future videos I will be talking about restarting all over again I think these videos will be helpful.
I hope you will do more of this series on garden design Olga 😊 Really enjoying your channel. I'm in a subtropical zone ( 9b), but have been experimenting with junipers and arborvitae that thrive thru zone 9. Boxwoods however do not like the heat here. 🌄
Thanks Olga! I would like to know how your Rold Dhal roses are doing? Planing to get the bundle for next year. Do they smell good like LofS? Are they similar color? Can’t tell from the pic in website Thanks!
I just went for a garden walk today and will be filming this video sometime next week. I did an update on Roald Dahl set of 5 roses for you there. Stay tuned.
Shrubs for poor soils I would say, look into verbena bonariensis perennial. It is not a shrub, but it has super deep tarp root and once established, nothing can kill it. It becomes bigger and better every year, needs sun to thrive, and eventually reach the size of the shrub.
Hi, just discovered and subscribed to your channel. Looking forward to this series. I just bought a small lot with a tiny beach cottage and no place to store gardening tools, so I’m wondering what you did with yours after getting rid of your shed?
Welcome to my channel! It is good to have you here! I just moved my tools into tiny shed which I have at the back of my house and the mover went into garage. Not the best solution, but compromises are needed for small spaces.
@@OlgaCarmody I have an odd, acute acute angle at the far end of the plot, à pretty useless space. Maybe I’ll just hide a small shed there behind a hedge. Thanks for replying 🤗
I’m loving your content. I’m learning a lot. Ty. 🙏🏼
I really like your thought precess. Thank you!

as always, another GREAT video Olgo, Thanks !!!!
I am looking forward to the privacy gardening video. Great tips on this video. 🇨🇦
Oh how I wish I was closer to you. I don’t seem to have the know how 🤔. You garden is so amazing!!

That is the temptation of many folks, we are all impatient to fill those spaces as quick as we can...
Very informative site. Can you address how to manage tip blight on green giant arborvitae?

There is magic in collecting first fruits and veg, isn't it? I love my cucumbers right now!

I was there too, those gorgeous plants looking at me from the nursery shelves!

And you know, gardens are there to enjoy! Even if we create something which is not perfect, it is going to be a great space for us to enjoy and relax.
@@OlgaCarmody That is so true.😊

I can totally relate, we garden on the lot with 5 different neighbors. We ALL need privacy from each other. I am the one with 3 kids, mind you!
I am so excited for this series! I have a garden of similar size and am working on many of these things myself.
Great, stay tuned. I am glad my work is helpful!

Hi Olga, I have a 15 foot drainage easement through my back yard. Any ideas what I can do for privacy? Shallow rooted shrubs?
