I always appreciate these sorts of videos that involve more of the maintenance side of keeping exotics. Unboxing and enclosure builds are exciting to view but I imagine get people into the hobby who aren't as prepared for the regular upkeep because those videos make up a majority of content.

I hope you all enjoy the video and learn something new! Don't forget to answer today's question of the day!

I also have Exo-Terra water dishes. Though now most of my snakes are in a rack system and have deli cups, I'm keeping all my dishes for if/when I can buy a house and move all my reptiles into awesome display enclosures.
Right now, only my DeKay's brown snakes have an Exo-Terra dish because they are WAY too small for the rack.
But you are super hard core when it comes to washing your dishes. I also use my kitchen sink to wash my deli cups. But I let then soak in super hot soapy water. Then use a similar sponge like yours to scrub them, then rinse and refill. Same when I was using Exo-Terra dishes. And then I just rinse out the sink.

It is funny how the turtles immediately reacted to the new water. You could use a barrier around the bowl to prevent a lot of soil from getting in, like for example pieces of bark that could scrub the animals off when walking. It is just a random idea that I thought about right now, I haven’t tested it.
I usually clean my water bowls with bleach, and I have a problem with mineral deposits too. Also, have you ever witnessed smaller animals like geckos actually using the water bowl?

ET reminds me of my T. apophysis slings, every time I change the water I make the mistake of feeding them at the same time. They love to throw their boluses into the water dish when I just changed it. For the QOTD: I change my reptiles’ and frog’s ever two days, for the tarantulas it’s every week (with the exception of the T. apophysis slings it is 2x a week). Dish soap and hot water are the best bang for your buck cleaner.

Your enclosures are incredible and all your critters are so beautiful, happy and healthy. I don’t know which I like best..love ‘‘em all 🥰 The turtles and Sabzi are standouts for me but then so is that glorious garter snake. Speaking of garters are you planning on maybe getting her a roommate or 2? I’ve heard that GSs do better with company. Of course that could lead to little garter snakes suddenly appearing in the enclosure from time to time unless all her friends are girls 😂. I had garter snakes years ago in a small group and they were so much fun to feed! Sometimes they got to go “fishing” in their water bowl. And I had a litter of babies once or twice🙂😎Anyhow, your videos are all so fascinating to watch, and I look forward to them. Am also watching your older videos since I’m a relatively new subscriber.

Each of my animals have two water sources, if you count my crested geckos ( which *YES* they do drink standing water from a dish) they have three sources, counting the drips from misting. That way, in theory, my snakes can soak in one and drink from the other, and yes every couple days they get changed and wiped clean but I only deep clean them weekly. I also don't mix them up. Each animal gets the ones they have always had.

QOTD: Oliver has a water fountain. It has two filters included. So I take it completely apart every Sunday and scrub every single piece with soap and water. I use bleach on the parts that can have it as well. I top up his water as needed throughout the week.

Very important point! I should have mentioned that I use Reverse osmosis water for all my reptiles and amphibians. This is considered in how regularly I supplement their food since they don’t get minerals from their water :). Hope that helps!

Why? Bc it's not right until it's muddy, Dad! That's why! Turtle's Pledge Clause 3, part B. We GOTTA do it!
I do a vinegar soak, scrub with a tooth brush, fresh water rinse and dry in the sun every 2-3 days. Once a month dog bowls, tarantula water caps, and reptile bowls ego through the dishwasher on sanitize setting, chicken drinkers get a 10% bleach soak.

You'd be surprised. So many people think crested geckos don't drink out of water dishes but I have video after video and several pictures of them drinking. Animals are most vulnerable when drinking and eating so they tend to keep that private.

@@amandastakeonit7402 You might be right, though many desert species live of the juices from the prey. But i keep the water dish supplied in there.

Yeah i agree two days is perfectly fine.three maybe but thats at a push. The water starts to get slimey at 3 days especially if in a warm enclosure and if any natural material like dirt, shed skins and of course turds gets into the water. I saw a video about a guy that keeps several gtp’s and when asked how often he cleans his dishes and changes the water he said FIVE OR SIX DAYS!!! I was like wtf? That is not good especially with species like gtp’s or emerald tree boas that are somewhat fragile and more susceptible to bacteria etc.
I change the water every single day just giving the inside of the dish a good clean but the uneven outside takes a bit longer to clean so i do that once a week. Never had any problems so far. Knock on wood🤛

Thanks for sharing! Different people have differ methods that work best for them and your animals but I agree that I personally, would be concerned about waiting that long to wash my own animals water dishes that infrequently.

    • @Reptiliatus

Thanks for sharing your routine! It's good you still do it every few days because the water sitting + warm temps does produce some bacteria. You can usually feel the inside of the dish is almost slimy.

I am so sorry. I keep thinking I won't comment again, and then you say something or I see something I just have to respond to. SO those really are the cutest turtles I have ever seen. I have never really wanted a turtle because of how dirty they are and they tend to have a lot of health issues from what I have gathered. Anyway, if you put their water right up against say a clean rock, they might go from that, rather than the substrate, into the water.
