I wish I could find my grandad on one of these videos. He was a jockey and later a trainer. He was an apprentice at 14 in London! He is 89 years old now ! He has a photo of him winning a race in Newmarket. I love my grandad so much :)
This very horse and the very race is one that Pete Best’s mother Mona pawned all her jewelry and bet the money on ... a 33-1 longshot named “Never Say Die.” (she liked the uplifting inspiring name). She used her winnings to purchase a 20 room victorian house at 8 Haymans Green in Liverpool. Eventually the basement of which would house 'The Casbah Coffe Club' -- Liverpool's first Rock and Roll club -- which gave 'birth' to the Beatles' career. Pete Best her son was the bands orig drummer.
Very true. This race with a young jockey Lester Piggott and horse Never Say Die were pivitol in helping the young Beatles get their start. Had another horse won, Mona Best would of never had the chance to buy that house. Thus the then Quarrymen wouldn't had got their early start to have a place to play as a band. Other circumstances would have had to come into play. But of course John and Paul were determined to succeed so who knows. Maybe they would have hooked up with Ringo sooner and had an even earlier start! Fate has a strange way of manifesting events that become monumental. God bless Lester and that horse 'Never Say Die"
one of the easiest derby winners ive seen , also a very easy winner of the st ledger , lester was banned at the time of the st ledger so couldnt ride ..
