Check out this ohmmeter built and coded from scratch using an Arduino, 8 precision resistors, a multiplexer, and an OLED display! It can measure resistance from 0Ohm to 1Gohm with fairly high accuracy and it’s even auto-ranging!
We’ve provided all the code, a parts list, and a schematic diagram linked in the description - so you can easily build this on your own as well.
We have our own Steve Stefanidis, one of Programming Electronics Academy’s technical writers, to thank for designing this great project.
Check out this project build, and watch us test it against an off-the-shelf multimeter we got from amazon.

People I did this project, there is something missing here, is the A0, make sure is conected to X. DONT use Jumpers and make sure if you are using nano that you are feeding the MUX with 5V not with the 3.3V

Great project , fast reading and very useful in daily life of a technician. And yes, ofcourse you should talk more about the logic behind the programming and circuitry.

Hi there I just wanted to say what a brilliant video I've been wanting to billd a test meter and then send the reading over LORA to a remote reader for diagnostic purposes as part of my job. When I get my laptop back up and running again this has made it to the top of the list. Thanks again

Thanks Paul! I love the idea of sending the reading off to a remote device.

@@programmingelectronics Hi there it's hopefully like having 30 meter test leads on your meter

I have looked at quite a few of these videos and your auto-ranging ohmmeter looks to be the best so far. Thanks for posting it. I have a question, though. I do not have a 220 µF 16V Capacitor. I do have a 220 µF 10V Capacitor. Will that work (not too clear about allowable capacitor substitutions)?

Cool! It doesn’t take long to put together and I think it would work fun is a smaller more compact form factor.

    Cool project !
Design a spring clamp that holds the resistor and all the electronics so you can squeeze a handle to open a set of contacts and insert a resistor and test it then squeeze and release then do it all again for another resistor would be so much better than fiddling with multimeter leads .

What if i want to calculate the resitance in the water so I can then calculate the conductivity? If I go with dc the water will go trough electrolysis so I think I need a square wave. Will this work with a square wave instead of dc?

Can i use CD74HC4051E instead of MAX4617? Please help me

Could you expand the project to have a miliohm as well, not only ohms?
If you can do it, I can design a PCB for it, and ppl will be able to order PCBs and build it as a permanent meter to use. And, if you'd have too much time, how about ESP32 dev board to use with CH304A and create a Bluetooth connection with a PC to display scores on the PC/laptop? That would be amazing :).
What do you say? Happy with my 2 ideas for the next videos?

is it possible to do this with a 3.3v arduino?

This is great to be able to control an ohmmeter like this with arduino. I have some homemade vactrols (LED/LDR) and I do analogWrites (PWM) to them to act as a variable voltage controlled resistors. Since these are homemade I want to test all 255 PWM writes to get the resulting resistance for each. Using this arduino multimeter I can automate this entire process. So I can generate say a comma delimited list of 255 resistances for a given vactrol and then export that into a spreadsheet or database for future reference :)

I have some 74HC4051E's here at home. Also they are only 47 cents at Tayda, vs like over $5 for the 4617 on ebay. Is it okay to use them instead of the Max4617?
