Episode 5 of Get Lost on Amtrak series
There's something romantic about a dining car on a train and the Southwest Chief did not disappoint! The food options were great--healthy & tasty for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Butternut squash chicken salad and a signature steak for dinner? Yes please!

Been there! Done that!
Had the steak and baked potatoes on a trip to Atlanta. Brought my GUITAR along and actually had a JAM SESSION with a couple of people on the train!
Awesome!
I always ride in the front of the train because you get there sooner than the other passengers.
delano62 seems legit
Yeah but you have to leave earlier too.
Actually, you arrive at the exact same time as the guys on the end of the train. You just have a shorter walk to the station from the ramp.
@red headed stepchild *bruh_sound_effect.mp3*
Duuuuuuuhhh.
Today I'm departing Ft Worth TX heading to Chicago. Never rode a train but have saved up and I am ready to go today, finally. I have a roomette which is the smallest private room available, costing $360.00 total with a trip length of about 24hrs. All meals are supposed to be included so this should be fun. I'm expecting decent food, but not gourmet quality. I shall report to you folks all during my trip so you can see for yourself what train travel is like in 2016. Leaving in about 2hrs and I'm excited. Lets go!
I did complete my trip to Chicago and for the most part it was great. I had planned to report along my trip but unfortunately there was no WIFI on Amtrak like their website said. Come to find out, only some trains on the east coast have WIFI and its intermittent and cannot be accessed on any particular train at anytime. Sort of a hit and miss situation. Other than that, the meals were good, Basically the 3 meals a day consisted of breakfast made to order and served in the dining car or in your room. Lunch always consisted of burgers and sandwiches and dinner included either chicken or steak or seafood and baked potatoes, never any fried potatoes or fried anything. There was always a pasta entre' option for dinner also. Any snacks between meals could be purchased in the 'lounge car' like can cokes for 2.25, m&m's and snickers or twix were 2.25 also. Chips were 3.00 and a hot dog in a bun in a cellophane package was 6.50 and that's about it. Lots of booze is available on Amtrak, however, you are much better off to bring these with you in a small ice chest. They actually encourage you to do this. Some ice is available on board in amounts like the hotels have in their rooms using the square buckets you know? The 'Roomette' I had was perfect for me. I was by myself so I just slept on the top bunk and always left the lower area configured with regular seats and the picture window shown in the photos. The ride was really smooth and quite comfortable. Room temperature was easily controlled. All during my trip I would imagine myself back in the day when train travel was the only reliable method to go long distances and I really think it will return as a major way to travel in the future. Energy requirements will demand it. I could adapt to train travel very easily as most people could, I believe.
There is one other thing about the Amtrak system that I have to report to all of you and it has to do with moral of Amtrak crews. Out of about 15 people on my train, only 2 had a good attitude with a friendly smile and demeanor. The rest basically just punched the clock like they had to and did the minimal things required for them. They acted like they were doing you a favor by letting you ride on their train. I learned that most of them earned $26 to $56/hr. Excellent benefits included. Job security is assured as they would keep their positions regardless of whether Amtrak made or lost money. For what these people actually did, this is totally ridiculous. The system is out of whack! No wonder they have major losses on many routes. I wanted to post wonderful reviews about my trip, I really did, but I have to be honest about it and there are major problems with our public train system that have to be fixed. The good thing is that they CAN be. The system has just sort of lanquished and deteriorated over the years. Many of the cars need to be refurbished and not necessarily replaced because the basic structure and utility of the cars remains solid and well designed. Most of the tracks my train used were in good shape and very smooth. There were a few portions of track that were uneven or bumpy but easily repairable. Our train averaged about 75-80 MPH but could be increased to 100-120 MPH with some minimal track improvements, some of which are happening now. All of the basic components are there in the Amtrak system, it just needs a makeover and a commitment of more passengers which would easily happen with improvements. Moral of the employees must be raised and better passenger service should be the main goal. Sleeper car ticket prices are too high and must be more reasonable to attract the numbers that are needed. Coach and Business seat prices are reasonable in my opinion. Overall my trip was good and I'm so glad I went on Amtrak. It has so much potential. There is no reason why America can't have one of the best rail transportation systems in the world. On my trip to Chicago it was such a relief not having to drive and park my own vehicle, buying gas and all those hours behind the wheel. I could relax and really just observe our great country while traveling smoothly down the tracks. What other mode of transportation allows me to do that? I thank you for reading and I would be happy to answer any questions anyone has. I would encourage everyone to experience train travel yourselves on Amtrak, which is very safe and a unique experience that you won't forget. I plan to continue on a trip thru the northeast then into Canada to enjoy some of their beautiful country by rail. Best wishes to all of you!
John Collins and gas was 69.9. I remember in 1965 it was 29.9!!
Yes Amtrack employees just go through the motions at $26 an hour and most are not even LEGAL US citizens....
@@mikemanners1069 26 an hour is not terrible pay, and I'm pretty sure all of them are legal. And some of them are honestly really friendly
Makes me want to take a cross-country train trip!
I've travelled on Amtrak train (even former private RR Company before Amtrak merged) for 50 years. So, I go once (sometime twice) a year in any part of USA as I love it and no matter if on time or delays.
the dining car gave me tons of nostalgia since the last time I train-traveled.
Oh my. Kelly reminds me of when I used to ride Amtrak in the 70s and 80s, and all the FUN I used to have. (sigh) Enjoy your twenties, folks.
Bill Anthony you can do all of that in your older years as well....
@@carryeveryday910 Nah I'm 50 already and too old for that shit too. I can't stand going more than 50 miles away from home anymore.
Kevin Rose That’s a you problem lmao just cause you don’t like leaving the house means everyone is the same.
@@carryeveryday910 Yeah I like being in the comfort of my own surroundings. Others might like more adventure.
Some travel tips for AMTRAK trains. Book a few months ahead of Summer travel and obtain a ROOMETTE sleeper. They are affordable compact and cosy. Our daughter got a Roomette from San Francisco [ Emeryville] to Denver for $375.00 and that included five meals. A coach seat cost $175.00 and passengers might spend about $100.00 for the meals. . , so the Roomette is a travel bargain! Always have at least a six hour connection between long distance trains. Buy an AMTRAK travel pass, which is well worthwhile having. These can be bought domestically, unlike the Eurail or Britrail passes, which MUST be obtained overseas, before use.
Looks like you got better food then I got last time I wrote the train. I went from Los Angeles to El Paso. Breakfast was just outside of Tucson, and it was obviously something that came from a micro wave. I understand that a train is different from a restaurant, but When airline food is better than what you're serving, time to pause and reflect.
Amtraks food can be great or can be bad. But most of the time it's great!
Same Cafe Car guy in this video was on my train from Chicago to LA, now 3 years later...as you said, the Cafe and Dining Car staff are all quite helpful and friendly. For a Government run thing, food and choices were just fine.
Uh , 4 ur information, Amtrak is NOT run by the government.
@@reynaldogarza3775 Its not "The Government" but the Federal Government is the majority stockholder.
Really great video!! I'm getting on the SW Chief tonight to go to LA. Thank you!!
Aceace, so nice to know such a classy gentleman as you present yourself, might be a fellow passenger on the train. How lucky would that be!
A few years ago I took Via Rail from Toronto to Vancouver. Stayed there for a couple of weeks. I then took the Amtrack to Portland, Or. Hung out for a few months Then eventuality from Portland to Chicago. A trip I've always wanted to take. Took the sleeper cabin option on the across continent journeys.Great time.
Much better than a freaken plane and all the security check people go through.
kazuza9 I'd much rather be on a plane for a couple hours than on a train for a couple days.
Excelent video...I would like travel in Amtrak!!!
Amtrak is the best way to travel in comfort. I'm ready for my July1-18 train trip to Los Angeles then back to Phoenix July11-14 then by bus to Hermosillo,Sonora,Mx. then back to Tucson on Wed July 16 so I can get on the sunset limited @0800 July 17 back to San Antonio. Then I drive 125 miles to Victoria Texas to my home.
Sounds like my friend from England. He never flies he takes the ocean liner over. He says the time in travel is with no jet lag and great eating. A train I suppose is similar in that you savor the journey. Hmmm, that's got me thinking.
I would take Amtrak over a plane any day and it isn't because I'm obese I always preferred to take Amtrak or any type of train to get to places. I know that people like to rush to get to their vacation destination but isn't having a vacation you're supposed to not rush to get to the place you're going to and just relax? People are rushing too much nowadays that they're forgotten how to relax.
briansivley2001 If you're going on a vacation you"ll want to leave your hell hole of a city and get to your vacation spot ASAP. Amtrak doesn't do that
American trains are outdated. The same distance can be covered in a few hours here in China. Google China CSR trains. Ironically, the American railroads was built with Chinese labor back in the days.
Also, Amtrak does not molest you before you board the train.
The moment you leave your home train station you are on vacation. If you do not get that then best stay off passenger trains! US passenger trains are poor in comparison. Yet they are the only option some have. It would be nice if the US government supported train as they do cars and airlines. US Government has convinced tax payers trains are not worth the investment. Yet most of the world knows better! Poor comments on this reply are of no use.
Riding from California to Chicago on Amtrak is a great lifetime experience. Once.
Thank you this was the video I was looking for!
The train food isn't bad. The lounge cars are nice. But sleeping on a coach seat is almost impossible, at least for me. Nice video.
Karl Piepenburg How far do the Coach seats recline? I have a difficult time sleeping when seated. I prefer to lie down which eliminates the pressure points noticed when trying to sleep seated.
they reclined about like a living room recliner. They were fairly comfortable; I just had a hard time sleeping. On an overnight train from Chicago to Jackson MS, I slept a grand total of 45 minutes. Next time, I'll spend a little extra and get a sleeper.
Karl Piepenburg I think the sleeper really is worth it!
+Karl Piepenburg 100% agree, if you're on an over night train spring for the roomette! The coach seats are impossible to sleep in. They're comfortable but sleeping is all but impossible unless you count sleeping for 10-15 minutes at a time until the sun comes up.
+Kelley Ferro On some occasions :). For me I never been on a long distance train but from what I see, I guess coach is good. For some people eh not so much.
I've ridden the train on the Northeast Corridor many times and the first couple trips I ate food on the train.WOW,what a ride awaking. Not only was the food terrible,it was expensive,so I started bringing my own.Trip from North or South Carolina to Connecticut can be quite expensive food wise.My suggestion, bring your own food and snacks
Elijah Jenkins III yes not only do they not COOK as they say they do any more but it’s plastic
I’m so tired of people claiming everyone is so nice
Amtrak’s true objective is to destroy train travel.
I wish the govn would get rid of Amtrak and allow competition to return!
It's irrelevant to this video.. On the long distance trains if you get a sleeper your meals are included and the dining car has a kitchen so they actually prepare the meals. The meals are expensive if you're in coach and choose to purchase them but 90% of the people in the dining car have meals included.
But the sleeper cars are expensive, so the food is expensive either way.
Depends on the train and when you're traveling..We did the Texas Eagle from El Paso to Chicago this past summer for less than $500 for 2 people in a sleeper and have the Sunset Limited booked from LA to New Orleans after Christmas for about the same amount.
@@GrasponReality weird flex but ok
Missing those days when dining carts were full
The train is a wonderful way to travel. It sure beats being crammed into a 767!
Kelly let me tell you about our experience on the SWC. We also left Chicago. After Albuquerque we were alerted that anyone who had 6:30 or later reservations were out of luck. They had ran out of food in the diner and the cafe. I'm diabetic and had no food. By the time we got to LA. we were starving and my sugar dropped to where I was eating sugar packets off the table. They finally told us they were about 90 meals short.
Surprisingly That food looks pretty good
Wow that food looks good.I mean it looks 100 times better than airplane food.lol
Uhhh, WHAT airplane food?!
Technically it's true. But the airplane food is fresh but they are frozen before it is taken to the aircraft and the flight attendants warm them up for you.
John Collins omfg XD
you know the ones that they would give you in first class on domestic and international; and in economy class on international
John Collins So true..
And dont forget Delta they give you pretzels, peanuts, and the famous biscoff cookies :)
John Collins lol that sucked
Well, now Amtrak has done it. I just read this morning that they are doing away with the traditional dining car and offering pre-packaged foods. There goes the last vestige of civilized travel. The dining car was the one place where you felt elegant; from the linen tablecloths and napkins to the beautifully polished silver coffee pots to the spotless stemware. I realize it probably wasn't cost effective, but it made traveling by train and event. Now we have stale egg salad and rubbery meat sandwiches to look forward to. Gross! You might as well fly because you'll have the same crappy kind of food to look forward to. I for one, lament the end of an era.
The food better be good. The ticket is EXPENSIVE!
seeing Amtrak trains makes me wanna go on a trip through the Swiss Alps during the winter, just sounds so peaceful when you think about it
Amtrak runs over the Continental Divide through the Rockies west of Denver in both directions during the day. There isn't a more wonderful scenery after a snowfall in the world. The route along the Colorado River is great too. The California Zephyr.
Actually, Amtrak is more comfortable than European trains and the food is much much better. The only advantage the European trains have is speed and being on time.
Can’t wait. I’m taking the trim from Los Angeles to Seattle In January.
Thanks from Orlando
My family and I did this exact trip from Chicago to Los Angeles last summer. We really enjoyed it. We got rooms as well. This is so much better than the bus.
Great video ! Eat on the train looks delicious ! Just one question: someone here would know how to call the music we hear throughout the video, please ? I am french and I love this music ! Thank you in advance.
I just took an Amtrak train trip from Philadelphia to Charlotte it was 10 hours. I had a viewliner roomette, when I tell you, it was so nice. I prefer to travel by train than by plane or car. The only issue is when I arrived in Charlotte, my attendant was no where to be found and I had to practically run through the trains all the way to the front of the entire train luckily I ran into the conductor who let me off the train. That was the only not good experience. Amtrak does need to work on their service providers on the train some of them you can tell were having bad days.
Food on my Amtrak trip was fair quality but expensive. Steakhouse prices for about Denny's quality and small portions.
locker125 I knowwwwwwwwwwwwwww!
+JD Straw When I took the train and had a roomette all your meals were included.
True. All compartment passengers get all meals included, plus access to lounge cars on the train and First Class lounges in the stations that have them.
Yeah, I know. Looking at the prices on that menu is like looking at the prices in an LL Bean catalog.
Please, you just insulted Denny's with this comparison. Dennys food is far better than Amtrak food.
be sure to take extra snacks on your cross country trips, you never know when you'll see a needy passenger or a hungry child.
I had to give a guy on the California Zephyr $5 for food (he hadn't brought enough money). People don't realize that the reason why coach is so cheap is that Amtrak doesn't provide any food with the ticket. I personally couldn't imagine taking coach for a 2-day train trip, but for some people, it's all they can afford.
I always bring some honey buns, peanuts and/or mixed nuts, as well as some crystal light lemonade. Honey buns go with coffee for the morning break, and peanuts with lemonade make a good afternoon break. Nothing fancy.
yes carry my own snacks
TouchyBanana The food isn't that expensive to resort to MREs. I can afford a dinner at the diner every day on the train, but I do economize for breakfast and lunch with snacks I bring aboard. For example I use their microwaves to warm the sandwiches I bring aboard. Peanuts make a great snack, but I also bring apples too.
TouchyBanana So you prefer fake artificial and heavily salty food over real food? I see high blood pressure in your future, and possibly a stroke at a young age too.
Yum.
Passengers with "meals included" tickets get a DIFFERENT MENU than those who are paying for their own meal. The menu items are a lot cheaper quality than the people who pay for what they eat. So don't think you are gonna get steak and potatoes twice a day included with your ticket price, although it IS available for those who pay at the table
Unless things have drastically changed for sleeper passengers, this is not correct.
That has not been my experience on the Coast Starlight sleeper cars. It would be a little awkward in shared seating in a small car to have different menus. If I ask to have what someone at the table across from me is having, do you really think they would say: “Oh, you’re traveling First Class? Sorry, that’s only available to Coach.”
Took a cross country trip on Amtrak. We were on a ten day trip. The food is nothing like she is showing it.
Amtrak changed their dining to Flex Dining to save money. It's a rip off.
You got to sit alone for dinner? They usually pair up in fours. Went from Chicago to Sacramento. LOVED it!
Yum the food looks good as well
You left the biggest part out: community seating trumps anything good about the food. Several people stunk so bad it ruined the meal. One crackpot with crazy eyes insisted on bringing us to Jesus complete with hand holding broadcast prayer. Then there was the nervous white lady listing off all the mixed race people she knew who had beautiful skin to her three companions of color, loudly and all through dinner. And the scammer who talked someone into buying dinner and ordered two full meals. It's a little better if you are served when you arrive at your table. You can sneak out as soon as you're finished. Some of the servers treat you as a group which extends the misery of a bad situation.
+Jo Ebak I thing you took the koo koo train.
+Jo Ebak Yes, too bad they all don't look like the one hosting this video. I've run into a bizarre groups in the dining car myself. I always get a sleeper room. There you can get the attendant to bring your food to your room.
+RickAZCA I've ridden the Empire Builder many times and have never encountered any of the people described above. In fact, the communal dining is always one of the highlights of the trip for me.
Jo Ebak I also don't like the community dinning, luckily we always ride with 3 or 4 people but it's the lonelier people who are the worst. I had a similar experience with an older woman but I can't exactly remember what was off about her. We did actually meet a nice new yorker for dinner who was a pretty cool guy. And my dad and I sat with a couple for breakfast which was kind of awkward but they weren't bad.
Benjamin Wilson ROFLMBO. I'm trying to imagine that horrible odor.
The last time I rode a train was in 1994, and I was 12 years old. I remember below the Lounge/Viewing Car was a highly-ventilated designated Smoking Room, which doubled as a hole-in-the-wall snack stand and liquor bar.
While I have _never_ smoked in my life [so far], is smoking still allowed _inside_ of the train, or only outside at station stops?
Smoking is not permitted aboard the train, thank goodness. I would hate to go to the concession stand and choke on cigarette smoke while I over-paid for my morning cup of coffee.
Was curious, about traveling by train. I just wanted to experience the nostalgia of it all. Thank God, for these UA-cam videos. They are so informative, and because of this avalanche of information. It has helped me with my decision. You could not pay me enough money to travel on a train. From the videos I have gathered. (1) That trains are ridicuously expensive. (2) Staff are paid well, but don't act like it. Their rude behavior shows in their treatment of the passengers. (3) Poor quality of food, considering what you pay. I have a microwave. So, I would expect a little more, than a glorified TV dinner when I vacation. Best to furnish your own food as back up, because of this. (4) Bathroom's are not necessarily clean. So.....one can only imagine, how sanitary they are.(5) Depending on which travel package you have. You might have to climb down stairs, to reach the public bathroom below. There was also mention of a public shower.😖 😖 😖 (6) Not to mention cramped, boxy rooms. A claustrophic's nightmare. ( I am talking about myself here, and yes. I do realize that it's a train. And the space wouldn't be that much. ) This proves that saying to be true. "You can't miss nothing you never had."
i reallly like the amtrak system. unlike and airplane when you have liquid resrictions (typing is crap)
While this is very helpful and friendly-bubbly, you should try to travel SOLO. The experience is QUITE different. I went to the dining car and was seated, then the server came over and said I HAD to share the table with someone, and since the table seated four (no tables for two), when I said "I'd rather not (sit with others)" she PUSHED ME OVER to allow three people to sit at the table.
In an aside, you DO have the option to eat in your roomette/bedroom as an option, which would have been a more friendlier option instead of being pushed, but I had to ask for it.
Additionally, the meat, which was a fried steak (the chicken was sold out), or some-such, made me quite ill. My point being, just like a plane, book your meal when you make reservations!
Wonderful video. Thank you.
Unfortunately the food on Amtrak sucks now! Very poor TV dinners! Too bad. It was one of the nice things about train travel!
Cuanto cuesta esa comida como la que usted comio. ? Felicidades por el video con tan buena información de los alimentos.
Wow the food looks really good, I can't wait till I go on Amtrak next year!!
Need "Sea legs" on the trains, I lovet it!
I thought the food was good, I had Prime Rib and a big ole Omelette with everything for Breakfast
Cooool! Regards from Brazil
I took the Vermonter last year and was the victim of a bad hotdog from the "cafe car." Had to have been; it was the only thing I had that day to eat. Spent the entire ski vacation curled up in a fetal position or draped over a toilet. You don't see those colors occurring in nature.
From now on I pack my own food.
You look so bubbly and happy to be on the trip. I hope you had a glass of wine at some point.
sure did!
Meh. It looks like a cross between airline food and hospital food. I'll stick with the food I bring aboard. Thanks for the video. I've always been curious about the food in the dining car, but never wanted to spend the money to find out.
2021...MY how Amtrak "food" has changed!!!!!
I am crying. now that amtrak has gotten rid of dining service on the Lake shore limited and the Washington DC - Chicago route. Looking at what I could have had.
been there my dad works at amtrak we get to go anywhere we want for free .not trying to brag
Sophia Quijano what's to brag about?
Most people would just fly
You could just hop a freight and go anywhere free you don't need to have special privileges because of where your parents work.
Nice perk!
take the train out of either boston mass,or Pittsburgh pa and keep the camera recording what is going on out side,i want to see if the trains leaving either pa or mass go a certain way
AMTRAK says that if you DO purchase the sleeper ticket, with meals included, then you do NOT get "extra" food, just the portions they give you. . . .
🛑 STOP 🛑 You're Making Me Hungry
Wish we could have a such luxus-train in norway too.
Its awesome that Amtrak pays you for this
Shut your mouth.
the snack bar on the amtrak is expensive
Thank everybody using the northeast corridor for subsidizing your trip.
Unfortunately Amtrak is cheaping out on the dining cars for the eastern coastal runs to Florida. Cafe service only with the roomette and for double the ticket cost, you get dining service. Almost $700 for an overnight train to Florida. What a rip off.
Ok my english is not that good, but i am planning a trip in AMTRAK from Los Angeles to Seattle and i need some answers, please give me a hand... the food, is it included in the price? or not? is it expensive? is it good? give some advice for my trip please.
I love it 😍
If you’re in a sleeper all meals can be served in your room.
+Kelley Ferro What do you think is the best time of the schedule to take the train to enjoy the best possible views from Chicago to LA ?
When you have a room at you get a meal for free is that correct and what time do they serve supper
sweets takes a flyer so cool!
Great Video Series
make sure your credit is good. meals very expensive in the dining car...food in the cafe is microwaved so beware of anything with buns. beer is 8 bucks a bottle...
Meals from the dinning car are complimentary with a sleeper ticket.
"All meals are hand served..." You left out microwaved lol
This dumb blonde doesn't know the difference.
How do you make a RESERVATION for lunch and dinner on Amtrak? I already purchased my tickets.

Ótimo vídeo, Parabéns.
Believe me (first class) she is traveling. Amtrak stopped having great meals on the Auto train which use to be fantastic. I know she isn't on the Auto Train but you pay more for less now days.

Wonderful video, after you. What is the ticket price my dear?
Do you have one for the Texas Eagle 22?
Dame the train food prices are stupid expensive!
L menu and prices on Amtrak please
Meals are included in the ticket price if you book a sleeper.
Honey, lose that giant purse. There's not room for it on a train and you end up bumping into every person you pass.
Since you can't lock your roomette door from the outside, passengers are forced to bring their valuables around with them onboard. That does look awkward and clumsy though, you're right.
Was that Maz Kanata at 1:54 ? LOL :D
I didn't learn anything, isn't that the point of these videos.
For superliner - Two things very wrong so far. The dining car is NOT a panarama car. It’s above the kitchen.
ALSO, the snack bar is not below the dining car. It’s below the panarama car.
I SHOULD GET PAID FOR FACT CHECKING!!
Wouldn't the vegan meal be healthier than the meat options?
Nice video.
Pater noster qui es in caelis.....panem nostrum quotidianum da nobis hodie....amen
Food on Amtrak is far to expensive!!! I'm gonna take a greasy bag of chicken next time.
OK.I love to travel on Amtrak, but the Food was HORRIBLE back in the 90's My 8&9 yr.old took a spoonful of Ravioli and said YUCK😞yet..It was SO expensive.I NEVER purchased a meal again.
I’m on this exact trip in 2021, thanks to covid the food is microwaved in plastic dish ware and it’s the same quality, maybe even worse than airline food. And for some reason it is like a trillion degrees in my room.
