Payment for sex could be viewed as a "convenience fee", so to speak, as to evade the usual forms of investment (time, attention, validation, emotional support, etc.) which are typically held in higher regard by women in connection to the framework of potential sexual intercourse. Since, historically, the ordinary man has been much more likely to pursue a woman than the other way around, women (those whose autonomy had not been legally neutralized, at least) have held leverage to determine the requirements associated with sex with men. Thus, from this standpoint, I don't think sex has ever been an "equal exchange" per se. The only way an equal exchange would be had is if it were an instance of mutual carnal desire with no prerequisite involved.
