escapist is 404'd?
@@AftermathRV They just made a change on the site's hosting due to errors we were getting and they didn't tell me. Should only be down a few minutes.
That opening feels like it's getting faster. I hope it reaches a point where its just a step down from being white noise while remaining understandable.
@@theescapist Aye aye, it worked a few minutes later as promised, thanks for keeping me updated!
I hope Yahtzee's intro for escapist membership keeps getting faster and faster
Eventually it’ll only be a couple of seconds
I'm kind of hoping that it just gets slower and slower overtime and eventually the entire first segment takes up 5 minutes...
Play at 2x speed
It does. Six double taps get me right past it. It’s like a speed run.
Play it a 2x speed. Its just the best.
Travis destroying a TV over Sonic The Hedgehog having blue arms is 100% in character and shows Yahtzee really cares for the source material.
There's definitely a jump button. Granted, you can't always jump over everything and may sometimes still have to walk fifty yards around a chest high road hazard post but still... there's definitely a jump.
Hilariously enough, he realized this fact in the post-zp stream
So its like wizard101, completely useless?
@@azzzanadra damn that's a deep pull
@@ellog100 if your 3d game doesnt take advantage of the third dimension why even make it 3d.
But what's worse is to give us the means of verticality and then not use it at all.
@@azzzanadra i was just surprised to see someone reference wizard101
For some reason modern Travis Touchdown gives me vibes of modern Johny Knoxville. Just an old ass dude trying to reclaim the glory days of his youth. And kinda, sorta succeeding??
It fits Johnny Knoxville though. Surreal to see the transformation he and Steve-O went through through the years.
Travis is acutally based on Jonny Knoxville
I love this description, keep doing what you doin
I think Suda literally said in an interview that Knoxville was a huge inspiration for Travis' character.
That's cause Suda based Travis on Knoxville.
Ackshually, the game *doesn't* start with a cartoon about a boy and his alien friend, it starts with Travis doing a video essay about a beat'em up he loved as a kid in the style of a *Tim Rogers* video.
Was it actually inspired by Action Button? I know Suda and Tim know each other but I never noticed that.
I didn't catch it was supposed to be a UA-cam video essay at first lmao
So, long story short, this game is like the opening of Love Actually:
"This is shit isn't it?"
"Solid gold shit."
I mean... that's explaining like very Suda/Grasshopper game so I don't even mind.
Finding a modern gamer who would call Killer 7 a masterpiece on their first run is like a 1-10 odds when it used to be 7-10.
I relate Suda51 to Hawaiian pizza, you either love his stuff or you don't. I knew what I was getting into with no more heroes 3 and it was a fantastic ride.
Considering Suda actually got Takashi Miike to cameo in NMH2, it makes perfect sense to me that he'd prioritizes talking about his movies over fluid map design.
BRANSTON PICKLE IS BACK THIS ISNT A DRILL
I think you meant this isn't a dill.
@@Cooleepable Having never had the stuff, being a yank, I was unsure if it was dill or sweet and you know a Britbong would call me on it
@@davidrobichaux9073 It's actually available here if you want to try it out, at least in the Midwest, at World Market for a reasonable price, or on Amazon for an absurdly inflated price. I'd assume any large-ish city has somewhere that sells it.
@@Cooleepable I've got a world market!!! Branston pickle while watching 2007-2009 ahoy!
It's funny that Yahtzee talks about an unsubversive moment in the game regarding the RPG fight when you can actually end the fight really early by killing the menus and refusing to play by the rules.
My favorite part of these videos continues to be when Yahtzee says "Was that slow enough, Nick?!" at the 35 second mark
Yahtzee, the game has a jump button in the overworld. It's the same button used to jump in the designated fighting areas.
probably the best joke in the video. absolute masochist refusing to press the B button
To be fair, you can barely jump over anything, so you might as well not have the jump button to begin with.
@@yamazaki752 true, Travis cannot clear walls, but knee-high fences aren't a problem. Honestly, the overworld jump is helpful, but not as much as it could've been.
It doesn't do anything though.
I think this Yahtzee describes Suda 51 mindset perfectly. He can make totally weird, fun and unexpected things where you fight a football player in a mecha suit, an earthquake robot that says everything literally or a Russian astronaut that lived in space since the Cold War. However, he can also make pointless smug self-indulgent bits like a long drawn out RPG battle where the joke "le funny self-aware vidyageim" and repeating the same joke several times. There is no middle point with Suda and I think that's why people find him fascinating: you either admire his style or you are annoyed by it. Or both at the same time.
I feel like this applies more to his recent games being both NMH 3 and Travis strikes again. Everything after the first NMH, he only worked as a producer or co-director (loli pop chainsaw being his least attached work) back than Suda were put critiques or "deconstruction" of game tropes more subtly and mixed in the game play in his games rather than characters flat out pointing it out and explaining it. An example being in the Silver Ward how the characters make small remarks at all the bullshit puzzles they do but its always said in a way that fits the characters and the world they live in, rather than them flat out saying "I guess this just what we do in text based adventure games." Suda has just changed, spilling his spaghetti everywhere not caring about subtly cause now hes back and feels he has to be more wacky now.
So...should I mention there's actually is a way to skip the JRPG boss fight in game?
I love the dude's work but I think that he can make his ego get the better of him when it comes to him directing his games. But he definitely isn't kojima bad though.
@@shawklan27 I guess? I wouldn't call it ego since he doesn't give off that impression from interviews or reactions to reviews of his work. It feels like any other creative director who has a vision on stuff that appeals to him and set's out to game from it with the resources and crew he has.
He only has done it in NMH, as far as I'm aware. There are other suda games you know
"Sonic does not have blue arms"
Chris-chan? Is that you?
Nah, he's in jail
@@USMC49er yeah, I know. Sucks we won't be able to watch the hearing next week
Pretty sure Travis wouldn't bad touch his mom.
@@SuccubiPie mostly because she's dead
to be fair the average sonic fan is just as bad .
Remember the meltdown over sonic's eyes on sonic 4 lol?
Now I'm confused, because he said the second kind of game interests him more, but all the imagery he used are literally levels in Psychonauts 2. Yes, literally.
What do you mean???
@@dubstepbeecorsi6892 I think I was referring to the "stream of consciousness" at 1:44, there's smiling teeth (like in the very first Psychonauts 2 level), and rainbows coming out of his brain, which is also a level you play, which has very sixties psychedelic vibes :)
I always forget that Kazuhira Miller and Travis Touchdown have the same voice actor.
Isn't he the same voice actor as The Medic from TF2?
@@CyberLink70 He is!
@@UnexpectedDanger "Ze downvard fucking dog is not as revarding as ze hurting, boss"
As someone that ordered the collector's edition and is now stuck waiting for the publisher to actually finish making the prints, this at least gives me a reason to be patient and appreciate the reprieve before starting to panic track the site for updates.
So I finished it this past weekend - it was short, fun, and quirky like previous games. It's also deeply flawed. The open world was kinda very janky, both in performance and design. The lack of levels leading up to each boss fight was incredibly disappointing. The music was kinda meh this time around - a few decent tunes, but the previous two NMH games had far more catchy tracks. And the lack of alternate beam katanas was a bummer.
Despite this, the combat was solid, if a little repeative (Yatzee's HP Sponge joke is dead on). The story suits the series greatly. The characters are a blast (I greatly enjoyed Travis and Bishops' rants at teh start of each ranking). The various references to all sorts of things, ranging from old school anime outros to Terminator, are a hoot. And the minigames were great (although the racing one could've done with some tighter controls, IMO).
Without being a completionist, I burned thru the game in about 15-ish hours. It was short, sweet, and a lot of fun. While not as good as teh original, IMO, it's still a solid entry in the NMH series. I'm hoping for a bit of DLC to wrap up some loose ends, though - they leave quite a few lol
Pixnlove? Waiting on that, LRG for 1 & 2 and playasia to ship the killion dollar trilogy. The former being suspicious as fuck.
@@wormwood5073 Yep... Already annoyed I couldn't order the signature edition at all.
I have a love/hate relationship with these kind of stream of consciousness games. I rapidly oscillate from finding them incredibly interesting and entertaining to completely insufferable.
@GiRayne I unironically love it. The combat was arcadey and fun, the characters over the top yet endearing, and the soundtrack SLAPS!!
@GiRayne It truly is a chaotic masterpiece. Like an old grind grindhouse, exploitation film or something!
Weird, I didn't even know the pro controllers can even get the joycon drift. I've only ever seen it on the...well, joycons
switch controllers in general are fucked
When I first saw the bosses for this game I thought it would be some kind of dream sequence where Travis ate too much of some esoteric Japanese snack and got trapped fighting imaginary anime characters. That's probably the twist at the end.
For anyone experiencing Joy Con drift. You can reduce it by taking a Q Tip and dipping it into some Hydrogen Peroxide.
Then you take the wet end and circle it around the analog stick. The way it's designed it has a weird gap that you can expose by pulling the stick in a direction and then running the Q Tip in the opposite direction of that.
Make circular motions with that for a bunch of rotations. Then you rotate the tricky stick around 10-20 times. After that point wait like 30 minutes. The drift should be considerably reduced. Unsure if this works for Pro Switch Controller too as I don't have one.
---------------------------
Tldr: For people struggling with Joy Con drift, hydrogen peroxide on a Q Tip, specifically in a circular motion, moving the stick along with the Q Tip should help.
Good luck to any Switch havers
Is this another DIY recipe for those cool crystals?
@@HiddenEvilStudios I've actually tried it out, it works decently. Obviously nothings perfect. I use my Switch a lot and Drift is very annoying.
wasn't the actual fix just to put some pressure behind the analog sticks? kind of like the fix for the old PS3 controllers
I put the joycons in a box everytime.
Super Paper Mario's random RPG point was funny because the game still didn't really acknowledge that it was a game, other than the passive references that still feel like a part of the world.
The characters acknowledged it was happening, but it was just a weird experience for them, not a reality bend.
For that one they didn't even acknowledge it. The door in Chapter 7 just shouts 'Can I get a little UNDERCHOMP?!' and away you go to the suddenly turn-based boss battle. Unless you're talking about the visual novel part in Chapter 3 which Peach does remark on, but yes not so much that it gets tiresome.
I think it was more the fact that it was referencing when the series was an RPG
doesn’t super paper mario establish that death in the mario multiverse is literally called “getting [your] game ended”?
Ah the jump button. The one thing you constantly forget while being a lazer sword weedwacker......and then die by an attack that requires you to jump.
I think Suda 51 has been overly encouraged to make things "weird" when he's best at making things odd but plausible. My two favorite characters in NMH1 were Dr Peace and Holly Summers, neither of whom is especially zany.
Dr Peace is a great little subversion of the "cool assassin" archetype. He's functionally a loner, not because it's cool, but because his work has alienated him from his family. He understands the power structure of the inner elite, but he's keenly aware he's not really part of it, only included in it when he's useful to them. And he knows that killing him will merely put Travis in the same unenviable position.
Holly, meanwhile, whips out a barrage of implausible attacks (leg-fired missiles, digging holes instantly) despite otherwise seeming a relatively grounded character. Like Dr Peace, she's a remarkably unaggressive person who serves to make the player question why Travis needs to kill these people, as well as reinforce the title of the game: sure, these assassins aren't heroes, but then neither is Travis.
One can argue that characters like Bad Girl or Jeane are villains and deserve to be killed, but people like Dr Peace and Holly are no worse than Travis and arguably better people.
Same reason why Captain Vladimir was my favorite in 2. The idea was kind of zany, but he was really just a man who wanted to go home, but deluded to think he couldn’t.
You should go play his Silver Case trilogy (Flower Sun and Rain included), they mix strange supernatural nonsense with the extremely mundane and one of The 25th Ward’s endings leads into Travis Strikes Again.
I'd say every boss is as bad a person as Travis. They all make their money from killing.
@@kirbles2035 They get paid to kill. Travis PAYS money to kill them.
@@blackhammer5035 That makes him sound dumber but not eviler; both sound pretty evil.
4:00 you can actually destroy the RPG display and make it a normal fight
It was nice to hear him mention Branston Pickle again
There was a ton of stuff to find in the overworld of the first game, that's how you found all of the t-shirts! You could also get the radar functionality so you could dig stuff up.
And it's been said, but there's definitely a jump button. How the hell do you miss/forget that?
Not even Yahtzee is safe from the drift.
No one is. It WILL happen to all of them, it's not the typical "10% of manufactured" issue, it's a literal design fault and they're completely denying it.
I'm glad this game seems legitimately good and isn't just our biannual update on Suda51's current mental state.
...which do you think that the latter description applies to?
I guess 5:58 is the best summary for NMH3 (and other "Suda games") I ever seen.
So how long before Yahtzee's intro turns into an incomprehensible jumble of British mumbling?
The show is called _"Zero Punctuation"_ because _"Incomprehensible Jumble of British Mumbling"_ was just too long and awkward to use as a title.
He's barely even British anymore
Ending with "but of course I was vey, vey drunk..."
@@jaspergood2091 bitter, cultured, slightly perverse, and judgemental..the only way he can be more British is if he was a badger
Seems Yahtzee has been watching a 60 part documentary about a certain individual.
You gotta do an end of series marathon
Forgot how much I enjoy hearing Yahtzee say suda 51 😁
Yahtzee, there's a jump button in exploration mode...
...even if you can't jump over most of the fences.
Not sure how to feel about this game anymore. No More Heroes is an awesome game, but I've found that I have an upper limit to the amount of surrealism I can take before I start getting annoyed by it.
Maybe just because I'm 31 now and helping to take care of my nephew. I've officially become my dad.

2:07 Worst possible time for a Chris-Chan reference, Yahtz. Still hilarious though
It shows the glorious effort they put into marketing NMH3 when I actually adored the other games but I didn't even know this one was a thing until this video.
well, most of the trailers didn't show gameplay as a joke
Yeah
This is actually really ironic, because I think this is the most well marketed a NMH game has been. It was revealed at E3 multiple times, showed up in multiple Nintendo presentations... Honestly, I don't know how you missed it lmao
@@KashKey- the thing is, most of those trailers were troll trailers with no gameplay. some didn't even say it was NMH till the very end

Been looking forward to this one and it's a lot more positive than I'd have expected lol. You can jump though.

Suda51 and Hideo Kojina should have some sort of duel with one another at some point. Maybe rubber duckies at 50 paces, or something. The winner can fight SWERY, or whoever it was that was behind SHORT PEACE: Ranko Tsukigime's Longest Day

Holding off on watching this video I really want to play this with no ones option. After a month of playing it off and on because work and life, this is an accurate summation of the game.
I couldn't get past the second or third "grind the same two minigames to progress the game" areas of the first game
Someday this will end and I'm pretty sad about that. Even sadder, I'll probably forget all about these videos eventually.
More reason to enjoy them in the present! If you won’t be able to reminisce in the future, then at least nisce in the present

Hey Yahtzee, I've been needing to get this game out of my head but am not sure what engine to start with. It would be a 3d golf simulator where magic is used to do wacky nonsense. I was thinking Unreal but people don't seem to talk about which game engines are good for which game genres too much, at least not that google can find.

Watching for the phyconauts 2 review. Hurry up Yahtzee, I’m about to pass out from lack of air!
I do agree with you on the self aware humor being used too often and abrasively and also agree on the hyping a boss to only kill them not just twice but like 5 times, it does annoy me like months hyping them, speculation videos of what their capable of, and humanizing moments with FU before the fight, only to be reduced as a joke for "real" boss when they would have been better of as side or optional bosses
this October the game is getting a multi platform release
1:24 Torille, Suomi mainittu!
Yah as someone that loved NMH1&2, I really hated how much it banged on about being self aware and all the references. I got sick of how lazy it felt and got turned off from the game. I also got annoyed with how spongey the enemies were (especially the regular enemies). It never clicked for me like the first two games did and I had no drive to keep playing it.
Also to be fair NMH3 does have a jump button, but you can't jump over fences.
aww i red up heroes III as in HOMM III and was like: the fuck? no more heroes III ? but i just watched a livestream of it :(
But there is a jump button Yahtzee.
Erm.... Ther is a jump button in the ipen world. It isn't very high will only get you oveer so many fences but it's there.

Next sequel, Suda 52.
Did he not ever try to jump? There is jumping in the overworld. As long as you're sprinting you can actually get over fences.
You know, in general I don't think Yahtzee and I agree on game types, there's a ton of stuff I love that he can't stand (and vice verca.)
I do generally enjoy his characterization of games though, and even if I disagree with him on the end point, he's damn near perfect with his description for the most part.
That said, I think I've finally found a game series I can agree with him entirely on.
Thanks yahtz

Wait, so did Yatzee ACTUALLY do the whole RPG fight when you're supposed to break out of it and then have a real boss fight?
I thought that was clever cause it kinda went beyond the "Lol, we're gonna do a bit but make fun of it the whole time"
When Travis gets so frustrated he actually breaks the RPG UI, that was great.
