This is the very first thing I heard him play when he released it on the first album. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing on the radio. "Who is this guy?!" Still my favorite song by him and I think it’s the best he’s ever written.
roy rogers is definently a blues guitar master i love this guy i listen to so much blues i forget who i have and haven't hurd but i definently hurd of this guy about 5-6 years ago totally forgot about his amazing talent and slide guitar..
Yes --but did you listen to any of his other clips ? Remember he is singing the BLUES--and there are many who profess to sing--not only the BLUES--but sing ( ? ) as I said have you ever heard of Mick Jagger-( and I think Mick and the boys are not only great--but they have stood the test of time ( Keith is an extremely creative guitarist ) THEY ARE THE GREATEST ROCK BAND EVER ! I've heard Roy LIVE many times--he is unreal--I enjoy his vocals--and he play's the shit out of his guitar !
Actually the song has had both titles. You will notice that Roy himself calls it "I'd Rather Be the Devil Than to be My Woman's Man" at the start of this video. The late great John Martyn id a version of this tune many years ago [I think it was on hi 'Solid Air' album - but that may be wrong] - He also called it by that name. And, I think it's more accurate, because it's the tag line of each verse.
Fred McDowell....said i don't play no 🎸 roll. ......Delta Blues🎸 Special Blues.... When the black man wasn't allowed to speak the guitar did and we're talking about amplifications frequencies. The stuff Jimi Hendrix later discovered.....
#1: Devil Got My Woman Lyrics, by Skip James, from Martin Scorsese: Best of the Blues Soundtrack I'd rather be the devil, to be that woman man I'd rather be the devil, to be that woman man Aw, nothin' but the devil, changed my baby's mind Was nothin' but the devil, changed my baby's mind I laid down last night, laid down last night I laid down last night, tried to take my rest My mind got to ramblin', like a wild geese From the west, from the west ...cont
Apparently you did Not listen to any of his other clips--and I'm figuring you have NO appreciation FOR THE BLUES. I stand my ground I have seen and heard him LIVE many times. He sings the BLUES with CONVICTION and EMOTION and PLAYS THE DAYLIGHTS OUT OF ALL HIS GUITARS. THERE IS NO ONE THAT EVEN COMES CLOSE TO HIM--SLIDIN' & PICKIN' !!!
...con't The woman I love, woman that I loved Woman I loved, took her from my best friend But he got lucky, stoled her back again And he got lucky, stoled her back again
This is a Skip James song; I believe Skip used EBEGBE, low to high for this tune. That's Em, I think...you could also tune down to DADFAD - same fingering, less tension. Hope this helps.
That's called artistic license. Although it's a Skip James song, it's been played alot all over the South. As these songs often do, one person hears it from another, and words get slightly changed as it moves from town to town, region to region. There are even old songs that have the same melody but completely different sets of words, like "Change My Way of Living" and "Catfish Blues". Two different songs, same melody. And Roy has changed the words to fit his style, from where ever he heard it first.
@men0vi pretty sure covering a song doesn't mean you are trying to fix it... Skip James' original is better certainly but this is a respectable cover for sure.
yotam wntrb which one was that? nothing beats "the devil's hands are idle playthings". You know any similar series? I've already seen "Tripping the rift" and "Rick and Morty". Looking for something decent and new to come along
Sorry--in that clip he sounds like he has a cold--I have seen and heard Roy many times. He can sing--did you bother to listen to any of his other clips ? Then again--remember he is singing the BLUES--there are many other so-called singers that in my opinion CAN'T SING ! NO MATTER WHAT GENRE ! I won't name names-appreciate that many BLUES singers sing with EMOTION ! Ever hear of Mick Jagger ?
Judging by your handle I'd say you were a metal head. I don' think many of the screamers you probably listen to can sing either ! Have a little respect--listen to some of his other clips--not only can HE SING BUT HE PLAYS THE SHIT OUT OF THE GUITAR !
I'm sorry folks. Yeah, he's going to pick. All right, but he lost that Essence. That Soul part of it. That's a Moun. He's sound like Roy Clark or somebody. I don't know is too countrified. I'm sorry.
This is the very first thing I heard him play when he released it on the first album. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing on the radio. "Who is this guy?!" Still my favorite song by him and I think it’s the best he’s ever written.
Amigo Roy Rogers never wrote this song, this song was written and originally done by Skip James.
He is one of the most talented pickers I have ever seen.
Check out Tommy Emmanuel if you like this style. Specifically his rendition of guitar boogie, live is best, he makes it fun for the audience.

I miss my 80's-90's days in the East Bay seeing Roy (& the Rhythm Kings). Too many good times to count. He is definitely the man.

@UnknownBetrayal There's this singing cowboy if I'm not mistaken. This guy was named after that character by his parents :)
Yep. There is no Dale Evans with this Roy Rogers!
Has nothing to do with the capitols. That person making the comments must be brain dead musically. Roy is without a doubt--AWESOME !
I like this as much as Geoff Mauldaur's version--and that's going some. The guitar has the perfect sound.
J'aimerais trouver son album en France merci de me communiquer l'adresse ❤👍
Love to see him on the same stage with Derek Trucks. That would be awsome.
Check Roy out with Bonnie Raitt - “Gnawin’ on it”!!
Saw him and Ron Thompson in Davenport, Iowa....$5 cover
Fred McDowell....said i don't play no 🎸 roll.

Justin, I appreciate your comment even if this is really considered acoustic blues. Great song and technique, isn't it?
That boy got the devil in him.
not really into country but he's pretty good
Check out I'd Rather Be The Devil by John Martyn and his Echoplex. Very different.
Thank you for the correction...

Skip james . Devil got my woman is the most haunting, wierd, spooky, and lonesome tune ever.
I just checked - Roy tuned down to D.
@ashlayblues who do you mean by the "original Roy Rogers"?
Isn't this the one and only then?
WTF!!!!!! It's not "MY" woman's man, it's "That" woman's man! O_O

Is this version in any album I can buy?
@men0vi

he turned a dark song to a boogie blues song umm No skip James nevermind played a slide just his fingers tune to drop d with a f# on the third string
Sure, if you write your comment in capitals you must undoubtedly be right!
Go right to 01:38

Country!?!?!? You have a lot of learning to do.
Your callow philistinism shines like a beacon troll

Fail. Skip James would own you o_O
If it ain't broke...
You clearly don't know what the blues is about.
Ken Blaxley I wish I had a time machine so I could go back and smack you upside the head!
Sounds like he's just shouting. Occasionally in the same key as the song.
Ight, but he can't sing.
Nope, can't sing.
That fools dead though Feel free to post a video of you doing better
