Mika and David, perhaps the most legendary team mates in all of racing history. These guys were basically married for 7 years at McLaren - to my mind still the highest ever point of the team. Yes, Senna and Prost maybe raced at a higher level, but their ugly, aggressive rivalry scarred the team and the sport more than it left a lasting positive impression. You always get the feeling that Hakkinen and Coulthard truly respected each other and always worked for the betterment of the entire team. Bringing them together in the present day always guarantees a good time. There's so much love for these fellas in the entire motorsport community to this day. And I'm glad they experienced the naked violence of a Rally1 car on gravel. I rate rally drivers as being much, much better than even F1 drivers, so Mika and David having panic attacks while Kalle attacked the Sardinia stage made me so happy.
I'm not disputing anything about how crazy sport rally is. But it's also a very common theme that when you are good driver (in any category), you are a terrible passenger at high speeds. 😃 Often good drivers have a need to be in control and they also understand the margin of error in a higher level than others.
@@magicofshootingstar It's because there are so many more variables in rallying than in circuit racing. It's not just the unpredictability of the circuit grip; it's also the unevenness of the surface. Hit a bump in just the wrong place while at high speed and there's almost no way to save the car. It all happens on real world roads, so your reactions and feel with the car, as well as car control, rhythm, scope of commitment and anticipation have to be so much more developed - all while processing information from your co-driver.
@petertromp8786 I understand that but I'm just saying rally drivers are often as scared if they get to go to be passengers in two-seaters. Or Indycar. Or other disciplines 🙂

I've always thought the co-drivers are even crazier than the drivers. For Coulthard it was an out of body experience to just sit there. Now imagine reading pace notes like both of your lives depended on it.
Both of their lives depend on the actions of both of them, and for sure both are scared of their own actions and those of the other. But should be about the same level of fear for both. Why would anybody be scared of a world-class driver being behind the wheel of a million-dollar car, by the way? Not only he can drive thousands of times better than you and me, he also has as his Number 1 Rule to avoid crashing at all costs. Every racing and rally drivers must avoid crashing, even if that means compromising speed. Not only due to the expensive equipment, but also because crashing means losing heaps of time or even the end of your race. That in turn means you can't keep driving and using that experience to improve your skills.
@@zwjna I would certainly be very scared as a passanger no matter who was driving. That being said, I would be more than happy to drive a rally car and push myself to the limit. The difference is in the feeling of control. For the same reason I love racing but I hate rollercoasters.

@@janbo8331 As far as realism goes, I indeed like it better! It's been a long time since I don't play Dirt Rally [1], but I can remember some things. Here they are: the exaggeratedly high grip on loose surfaces, specially when going sideways, and the very low weight of the cars. Weight transferring is not much of a problem, nor a need. That is specially noticeable with the Group B cars, which in real life were so understeery and unresponsive and needed some aggressive driving to make them turn. Some of them had permanently locked differentials, and they all had very primitive AWD systems. Yet on Dirt Rally they steer immediately and are faster through the stages than WRC cars, which is for sure not realistic at all. The Monte Carlo stages are icy and snowy, but they feel extremely grippy - compare with [2]. The cars on tarmac feel like driving on gravel but with much more grip. They slide laterally easily, which for sure can't happen with proper tarmac tires and the high grip of the sealed surface. They should feel more like a train. Hairpins are quite easy with the AWD cars on Dirt Rally: there's no risk of spinning the car immediately if you throw the rear around too fast and you don't have proper throttle control. I don't quite remember now, but I believe I was throwing the cars sideways around hairpins, going flat on the throttle, and nothing would happen; just drive off nicely. This is a common source of controversy in the world of NGP physics, in which it's easy to lose control on the hairpins. People believe AWD cars shouldn't spin on tarmac hairpins. Most likely they don't know they can setup the cars to avoid that, and that such spins also happen in real life - and that for sure WRC drivers avoid spinning at all costs on them, since there's very little time to gain in those, but a lot to lose.
