Nena - 99 Luftballons (Cover)

My recreation of “99 Luftballons” by Nena from 1983. Only the English language “99 Red Balloons” was sold in the UK back then. I always thought the German version was cooler. The English and German versions naturally have very different lyrics to match meter and rhymes. I’ve chosen to cover the German version here. The English translation of the German lyrics is all my own, for good or bad.

Thanks Ashley! I was never very good at German at school, but took it for 3 years as an extra subject at University. We had an excellent teacher from Hanover. I would love to do the B-side at some point: "Ich blieb' im Bett" (I'm staying in bed).

Interestingly, the colour of the balloons isn't mentioned in the German version. But it's very hard to shake off that colour association from the English version.

@@iarecharmed the Germans are that efficient they would just expect us to know they were red. The English version never charted in the US but the German version was Nena’s only US hit.

Ein schönes Lied was die Kriegstreiberei und das total irrsinnige Wettrüstungen kritisiert.
"Alle hielten sich für Captain Kirk" allein sagt schon so viel aus über Nena. Diese Lady war pissed off und das aus gutem Grund.
