Saban lives by the old school American way of life which is, "ask not what your Country/College/Work place can do for you but ask what can you do for your Country/College/Work place. These newer generations are always about themselves and what can they gain from everything instead of giving the best they have to everything they do. It's pure selfishness. Just like proper English requires you to put yourself last when naming others. Instead of saying, "I and them" people should say, "them and I." It all comes down to selflessness NOT selfishness.

As a Vol fan, massive respect for Saban and what he accomplished at Bama. I also don’t blame him for leaving. He can spend weeks, months, or years to develop great talent who can just up and leave the second they feel there’s a net benefit somewhere else. Coach Saban was always the head of the ship down there, and there’s no doubt that while he was still the top dog down in Tuscaloosa, NIL and the new transfer rules definitely stripped him of a large degree of control he had over the team and culture he spent years building.

With 134 division 1 football teams it’s not hard to see that the level of competition at the top is not the level of competition being played at points further down the list. However, there is still some exciting football being played at all levels. It may be “pie in the sky” thinking, but, it would be good to see a division created above division 1. Wishful thinking would be that the networks would support/promote both leagues with there also being a way for team to advance to the higher league. Create a salary cap and contracts so there isn’t “Wild West” free agency every year and make Coach Saban the first

As it did with bear Bryant, Frank Thomas, and Wallace Wade. For whatever reason, the school has a rich history of grabbing up winning coaches. It wasn’t a Saban dynasty. Never was. Clearly there’s a change in the structure of the sport and that will mean that not all of the people who thrived under the previous structure will thrive in the new structure. But I think, overall, things are going to settle back into exactly what I mentioned is what I love above. You’re going to have all of that but through different coaches. All along that path you’re gonna have a bunch of “well that’s a shame that X was forced out by the changes” moments. But football is still football. The best are still going to win. There should've been guard rails in place, but instead it's the wild wild west during the gold rush

And there were plenty of starters on those teams who weren’t even drafted, so if you were an NFL caliber player why weren’t you playing?
Plus, the transfer portal has been around over 5 years. It’s not some brand new thing, and he had already adjusted to it. I don't recall if this happened before or after that but the reduction to 85 scholarships was also costly for Nebraska.
Non coincidentally both corresponded roughly with the retirement of Tom Osborne.
In the new era of college football the recruiting advantages that an Alabama has had over a Nebraska are diminished with the ability to pay for top flight recruits. Its another point a player will have to consider and another place where a program can be innovative in its approach.
This change in CFB now corresponds non coincidentally with the retirement of Nick Saban.

Will the quality of play on the field be better or worse with NIL and the transfer portal? Will the players be more successful in life and tthe NFL? Will there be a more or less level playing field in NCAAF, with more level resulting in more interesting and competitive games? Will NCAAF prosper or decline? These are the questions that will be answered in the next season or two. I'm reminded of the old Chinese curse: "May you live in interesting times."

The "edges" Saban didn't have anymore were complicit "authority" figures at the conference and NCAA willing to look the other way when modern day Alabama did things under the table. This does not undercut the incredible quality of coaching and development he also brought to the table, but players have looked for playing time and financial inducement for 50 years now. What's my evidence? Alabama football was on probation four times in 14 years, only being off probation for 16 months during that period. But somehow, in the next 14 years, squeaky clean. And that just so happened to coincide with their rise under Saban, who started there in 2007. The 2002 violations were for paying $150k for a player to commit and arranging for another student to take the ACT test on that same student's behalf so he would qualify for admission. The 2009 violations were athletic department-wide for things that ended, miraculously, the moment Saban walked on campus in 2007. Weird, huh?

I think there needs to be a cap on the transfer portal example like if someone transfers they have to commit to a certain number of years at the school college football has become semi pro football But the thing is, it’s always been that the only differences now, the players, the ones on the field, taking the risk have the power, and in my eyes, there’s nothing wrong with that the coaches didn’t have a problem before when they would recruit players, then leave for a more attractive job or a better opportunity in general now that the players have the power Nick doesn’t like that too bad it is what it is times have changed

It was fun watching a player start as a freshman, evolve his 2nd and 3rd year and then watch him stay one more year or go pro where we can continue to watch them. It was the sport of football. Winning was extra and Conference and National Championships were bonus times. Now the sport is all about winning at any cost. It's different. One coach understands this and is successful at it..... Lane Kiffin. He rarely recruits. Lots of one and two year wonders. And the team wins. Nice to win, but the real football fans lose the excitement of watching young men turn into adults.

Doing something because you enjoy doing it is very different from doing something because you get paid for doing it. People used to play college sports for fun, because it's enjoyable. Gradually they started to play for the scholarship (and a few $100 handshakes, let's not be naive). Then for a chance at the pros. Now it's straight up for money. It's not bad to want those things or to give them to players. But the more extrinsic rewards you offer for playing a sport, the more you attract players who want the reward and don't care about the sport. It is what it is, not even passing judgement on it, but it's made the sport less enjoyable for me. The thrill is gone, as BB would say, just a little bit.

I've got no problem with the transfer portal, but there should be some limits and constraints. Now the NIL is outta control and is what's ruining what we love. There should be a salary cap because a true freshman should not make more then a senior. Example a grad transfer with eligibility should get to transfer wherever he wants for the most money because he fulfilled his obligation as a student there for he is rewarded with a bigger pay scale. With unlimited transfers about to happen your going to see a bunch of kids with no degrees at the end of their eligibility wondering what they did wrong. IMO the kids should get 1 transfer without sitting out excluding the grad transfer and coaching changes. thoughts? @JoshPate

This comment proves that you don’t know how NIL operates or is even funded. It’s literally in the name. Players are making individual money off of their name, image,, and likeness from outside forces. The schools are not paying them directly so your reference to a grad transfer or any other classification is irrelevant. It’s about the player capitalizing off of their NIL based on their potential and the boosters willing to pay.

I think what we are going to see in the next 4-5 years are teams with a lot of talented HS players who can't win games because their players are too high on their NIL deals and the like. It's going to be harder for a coach to instill discipline in the players because they can just say "Well if coach is going to ride me, I'll just transfer somewhere else". And they'll know that they can transfer because other schools are talking to them throughout the year.
So instead of 4 and 5 stars developing into NFL caliber players, we'll start seeing a bunch of them coming out of HS with a lot of fanfare, then flaming out in college because they were more interested in getting money than thinking long-term
NOW TO BE SURE, this is not ALL players. But these are teens who are coming out of HS with a lot of hype and now they've got people dazzling them with dollar signs. It's very easy to turn a kid's head at that age with the money these schools are throwing around and I think it's going to lead to losing some players who could have been all-stars and I think we're already starting to see a bit of it now.
Take A&M for example. Jimbo assembled top recruiting classes, but the kids were running wild behind the scenes and (from picking up context clues in The Pulse) ignoring coaches trying to build them into the players they needed to be, instead complaining that the coach was just picking on them. With the talent, he SHOULD have had AT LEAST one 10 win season and should have been averaging 9 or better. But he only managed 9 wins twice. GRANTED there was a lot of issues on the coaching and playcalling itself, but I'm sure the ability of a player to threaten to hit the portal with other schools whispering in their ears didn't help.

Yet NIL kept Ainias Smith around an extra year. NIL used correctly is a motivation to young men, particularly if it is tied to performance. Want to make more? Get better. NIL will also encourage guys to stay in school instead of jumping to the NFL early. Guys could easily be in a program for 5 years and earn their degrees with higher success rates. Want to fix college football? Give athletes 5 or 6 years of eligibility. Then they can earn master’s degrees, this is how to build maturity and consistency in programs.
