This is a long song but those few minutes go in no time when you close your eyes and just take it in. I was sitting here thinking, "do I really want to listen to a 20 minute song". Before I knew it, it was time to go to the next video.

This song was written by the great songwriter, Jimmy Webb. Glenn Campbell had a hit with it in 1967. Isaac Hayes version is definitely his own spin as only he can do it. It always makes me cry listening to this. Thank you!

this song was such an example of musical artistry. I had this album when it was released, and to this day this song is on my playlist. Such a different expression of a Glen Cambell song. I miss music. there was a time when a 15 to 25 min song was not surprising. I mean most times you were smoking and blasting your Pioneer or Kenwood with the huge floor speakers.

I saw him perform this at a concert in the 70s, gold chain vest and skin tight pants full orchestra, fantastic. They don't do this anymore, what a shame.

I think that these were the days when all the musicians, the recording artist....all recorded in the same studio at the same time. Can you imagine what that would have been like....to be in the room while they cut this?! OMG....

I always visualize in the song that the guy is driving on the lonely freeway at night and when chord changes after "...and she didn't know that I would really go" he starts seeing the sun creeping up.

Notice how Ike incorporated other song titles in his music? "Can I Change My Mind" by Tyrone Davis. "Prisoner of Love" by James Brown. "You Keep Me Hanging On" by Supremes.

For mature ears and patient listening. Isaac laid the story out beautifully. The music and production of Stacks was awesome. One has to have lived and loved to appreciate the depth of his Lyrical content. You play this one when you can sit still for a minute. Classic!!!

Black Moses aka issac Hayes…. One of the greatest vocalists of our time. His voice had a commanding presence and this song was remade for the movie dead presidents. It was also the song forest Whitaker was listening to as he was drunk thinking about his ex wife in Jason’s lyric. Aka mad dog

      Hey, JJ-
I have a song for you to review.
The artist is "Q-Tip", (from rap group "Tribe Called Quest"), and it features singer "DeAngelo" in the background.
      The song title is "Believe".
I hope it's okay to request a song for you to review this way. I still didn't understand how to do it in the format you had suggested.
      Thanks, JJ

In the original version of the song. The storyteller finally breaks up his woman and drives from LA to Tulsa after several earlier attempts to leave her. Issac adds his own elaboration to the song in his long introduction

  • @anumbus

This is one of his greatest songs. This is way more than just a song. It's a journey down the road of a man's life and how something that started off so good can go so bad and how love is one of the most powerful emotions a person has. It can blind you so badly that you will put up with emotional abuse when you know you deserve better. The man was cheated on repeatedly but, he couldn't bring himself to leave her because he loved her down to his core but, even the deepest love will break at some point and he had to love himself enough to gather the strength to leave. This song had to be this long because every part of the song is essential. You need the whole Rollercoaster of this story and his orchestra had to shine. This is why he was called Black Moses.

Wow, I thought my man Black Moses' stuff fell completely off the map! He definitely was the newly crowned King in the late 60s and early 70s, then along came the new gun....Barry White. Fans then tried to pit them against each other, but they actually loved, and respected each other's music, and was real cool with each other throughout. Thanks for giving shine to my dude.

If you don’t know it, this was the album that saved Stax Records, which in 1969 was near bankruptcy.
Issac Hayes wanted to do an album his own way, which was significant because his prior Stax works were all traditional 3 minute songs. No one had ever before done an album with 4 sides and 18 minute cuts.
In fact, recording executives felt that black people would not purchase albums because most were poor in 1969.
They were wrong. The album was a huge hit, creating an icon of Issac Hayes.
A year later Director and Producer Gordon Parks would listen to the album intently and chose Issac Hayes to score his film, Shaft. And the rest as they say is history.

That was Isaac Hayes at his best. I am surprised that such a young guy like you had the patience to listen to the whole song. Ike has several songs in the 10 to 12 minute range but this was his break through album.

I reviewer is at a disadvantage because he wasn't surrounded by the times and related experiences of joy, pain, hurt, and love. Older folks reviewing it would express more emotions because the other experiences ride with us. Thanks for the format.

    • @montauk6

"Too dang long" and "Isaac Hayes" don't belong in the same sentence, all due respect. But if you think this is long, check out (when you got a moment, that is, LOL) the UNCUT version of "Do Your Thing": 1/2 hour, no commercials.
