Spot on! I've lived in Arizona since 1976 and I gotta say one of the things I miss from Detroit are the Coneys. Whenever I try to explain what makes Detroit coneys the best, I first have to explain that the ONLY toppings are onions and mustard! Don't forget the looseburgers!! There are now a couple Detroit Coneys here in the Phoenix area and the Detroiter who opened them is doing it right: mustard and onions, looseburgers, Better Made chips, Faygo soda (Rock and Rye, anyone?)...anyway, Lafayette was my favorite, too.

Born & Raised in the Detroit area, and Lafayette was my go to also. God do I ever miss those Coney's.
If I had to choose just ONE thing to make me move back to Michigan, the Coney Dogs would be the deciding factor for me hands down!! Period.

Very few people seem to be aware of this key difference - Lafayette used to use a Winter's brand hot dog while American used Dearborn brand. The garlicky and spices of the Winter's (called an L-901) is one reason Lafayette was superior. Unfortunately, Lafayette switched to the same dog as American in like 2015. That destroyed the notable difference. The chili is different as well. Lafayette uses yellow onion compared to the American white onion. The yellow is superior on a coney. The coney special with meat in addition to chili is never mentioned, but is superior to the regular coney.

I am a fan of the original Nathan's Coney, but Lafayette and American are really good as well, Lafayette has a bit tastier chilli. It's crazy that two rival brothers operate next door to each other like that. It's cool when you come by and they have someone on the sidewalk trying to get you to come eat their Coney over the other.

From across the creek in Windsor Ontario. No trip over the border is complete without two Coney dogs and a chili fries with cheese. I honestly love both American and Lafayette. Best dogs on Earth!!!
There is nothing on this planet quite like a coney from either spot.
Lol the 2 franchises are related or at least used to be. Their origins are 2 brothers ( from NY via Greece) decided to open a hot dog stand and brought their native country’s hot dog sauce brought it to Detroit back in the 30’s had an arguement on the kind of onions and franks to use thus American Coney Island was born. I always was a Lafayette fan since i was a kid still am but will eat American as well no bias.

Haha, we filmed this road trip a few weeks back; our filming schedule was nuts. We ended up having fun at night though. We need to do a meet up with fans and get beers in the future.

I agree with Dakota Mahan, Cincinnati Chili Coney’s are the best in the country. Gold Star is my favorite, with Skyline Chili a close second.
It’s not even close, in my opinion. I’ve had Skyline a bunch, and compared to a Detroit coney with their snap and chili sauce, it’s amateurs and pros. But everyone is totally allowed to have their opinion - I went into my first skyline experience sooooo excited and would probably rate it 3.5 out of 5.

The best we have where I am in Florida is a place called VooDoo Dog where they bacon wrap and deep fry their dogs. Would love to go to Detroit just for this. Another great vid in the bag, boys.

Lafayette all day closest I ever had to Lafayette was in Clearwater beach FL called detroit Coney Island the owners are actually relayed someway to the Lafayette owners at least that’s what they told me
