Oh yes Ian.. small towns with long histories are real gems especially in southern Europe. Before modern VanLife era.. after grad school..we got to travel all thru Europe in VW camper. We were almost the only Van Life we ever saw. We could park almost anywhere.
That is so dang cool!! Sometimes we wish we could go back in time. A VW camper would have been so dang fun way back when!!!
@@ian.and.ana.Oh yes... We were strangers in a strange land at 22 yrs old. We are from Malibu and we bought a pop top red vw camper with Dutch plates. In Holland everybody spoked Dutch to us and we were like... Huh?
And in northern Greece in every little town the mayor insisted that we stay at his house for dinner and breakfast. They had never seen someone traveling through in a camper much less anybody from USA. Breakfast at one of the majors homes was our first Turkish coffee ever.
We drank the grounds. Up for 2 days 😵💫😵💫😅
Another good example - in southern France we just pulled into a vineyard with the red camper late night.
When we woke up in the morning and we see were in the middle of nowhere surrounded by grazing land and vineyards. And as we woke up.. out the rear window.- a huge bighorn bull announced that this was his land.. and was practicing to charge us. Well quickly got to driver seat.. and pulled away slowly.

Portugal is so beautiful! I didn't realize just how amazing it was until visiting there last fall so I totally get that it's easy to overlook when choosing the next travel destination. I'd love to do van life in Portugal, it looks like such a great way to explore the country and it's beautiful coast. :)

Especially the area where I believe you spotted elderly lady lurking from her window at people on the path by the water 💙 I am sure I will absolutely adore Algarve video. 2:31 you should do the centre too, bc it is not just lisbon. Many ppl tend to overlook this region, when I think that, if you know where to go, you´ll just find the right places with the best food ever and amazing views. Within my municipality i have beach and woods and i wouldn´t change it for the world
Fun fact: Portuguese is similar to French, Italian, Spanish, and Romanian. All of these languages are Romance languages.

Latin based languages ..so they touch the soul.. while having a word for everything..not like lazy germanic languages that didn't invent words..they pack them all together to make sense..I miss you (3 words)in portuguese for example is just 1 word, saudade..that' s the one of the closest languages to latin..next to italian, spanish or romenian..

fun fact: if you go to the centre, there´s this bay located in a small town, which is shaped like a seashell. YUP, A SEASHELL and this is not man-made. in fact, it used to be way bigger but with climate change, it is shrinking in shape, being at risk of not existing in like 100 years. It is called "Baia de São Martinho do Porto".
How difficult was it to get your van from the U.S. to Portugal?
What was the process to ship the van and did you have any issues with driver licenses

You may should mention that your "hang out" at the cliffs and overnight "camping" there is illegal. If the GNR catches you, you may be lucky and give you an ultimatum to leave or you pay a heavy fine or both.
