    Fun fact: _The Amazing Spider-Man_ and _Life of Pi_ both came out in 2012 and feature a scene in which Irrfan Khan talks about a character named Richard Parker. Coincidence?

    • @MrSeyker
      @MrSeyker 7 років тому +67

      I get it, but the movie doesn't do a good job portraying it.
      Like a single moment of him after everything went down looking at the killer sketch and throwing it away would've been enough to tell the audience that Peter is done with his search for revenge.
      Instead, they just don't mention it and it's forgotten. There's a reason for it, but it's not properly informed to the audience (many people when the ASM2 came out pointed out that they never really bothered to properly close the thread of his uncle's killer).

      We can complain about that, but it is not the worst thing done to the character of Uncle Ben. The worst thing is how his death doesn’t have that impact the original one did and he brought it upon himself by trying to dive after the gun that the thief had. It was legitimately funny.

I personally have a soft spot for him because of Platoon.We'll conveniently ignore his two Razzie nominations for Body of Evidence and Speed 2 (although this gives the vibe that he was targeted because of being a big actor in panned films, not that he was bad in them).

      @Reggie Lovato He gave a great performance,but aside from the strained relationship with Harry which wasn`t even as bad as it was in The Comics and one scene where he goes on a misogynistic rant(Norman was a huge misogynist in The Comics in part due to his vow to never get emotionally attached to a woman again after his wife Emily`s death which was partially his fault as he gave the doctor poor advice and in part due to his Social Darwinist mindset),he came off as Willem Dafoe playing Norman Osborn,not The Comic Book Character himself .Chris Cooper may have been older than Norman Osborn in The Comics and may not have had The Character`s trademark reddish-brown hair but in the one scene he had in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 he nailed The Character`s coldness and callousness towards his own son to perfection! "I never imagined I`d die like this, looking at my own son and seeing a stranger."The 2002 Spider-Man Film had the same problem as the 1981 and 1994 Animated Series,it tried to make Norman Osborn when he wasn`t The Green Goblin a sympathetic character when Norman Osborn is not supposed to be a sympathetic character. Even before he became The Green Goblin, Norman Osborn in The Comics was a cold-hearted Social Darwinist with criminal ambitions.

    • @michaelotis223
      @michaelotis223 8 років тому +8

      Jesuz Jr if you were really really into movies at the turn of the century you'd realize there weren't much reboots...sure there were some remakes but the source material wasn't reinvented so drastically.
      Before Batman Begins there were little to no reboots that went in different directions. Nolan focusing on the Batman origins and giving him a grounded gritty feel was the first of its kind especially after the Batman franchise had tanked with Batman and Robin. Just as James Bond had sorta tanked with Die Another Day, it was in need of a fresh gritty start - enter casino royale.
      Of course casino royale isn't exactly saying it was inspired by Batman Begins, but Begins began (no pun intended) this darker, character driven model that films like Casino Royale have followed since. Plus it doesn't take a genius to spot this - Begins came out in 2005 and Royale came out in 2006

    I wish I could have liked this movie. Granted, I haven't seen it since it was in theaters, but I do remember that it was pretty boring. Say what you will about the Sam Raimi movies, but they had a sense of fun about them. The Amazing Spider-Man just felt way too bland and uninteresting! I don't think I was ever entertained by it as much as I wanted, which sucks, because I always had fun the Spider-Man movies (well, to an extent).

      I cannot believe how badly they botched Venom in 3. Here's a little backstory on Eddie Brock. Believe it or not, he has one of the saddest backstories in comic book history.
      Eddie Brock was someone who ran into a stream of bad luck. He was far from perfect, but he wasn't a bad person. His bad luck begins when a man claiming to be the Sin Eater contacts him. However, when Brock writes an exposé on this guy, it doesn't take long for Spider-Man to capture the real Sin Eater, resulting in Brock being fired in disgrace. He didn't lie. He was just given bad information and suffered for it. He was a victim of circumstance. Soon after, Eddie's wife divorced him, his father cut all ties with him, and he had to work for tabloid magazines in shame.
      He blames Spider-Man for capturing the real Sin Eater, but this was merely a way to help him cope with his severe depression, and when he started to feel good about himself, when he started weightlifting and getting in shape, when he started to take back his life, he found out he had cancer. Eddie was contemplating suicide at this point, but this led to him going to a church and ultimately begging God for forgiveness. But of course, this was the same time that Spider-Man was removing the symbiote and it didn't take long for the alien lifeform to find its way to Eddie. Feeling rejected, the symbiote sought revenge on Spider-Man through Eddie Brock, and Brock's coping mechanism of blaming Spider-Man became something very literal. The symbiote was a way for Eddie to take back his life after everything he went through.
      There was meaning behind Venom. There was meaning behind the bond Eddie shared with the symbiote. It turned someone powerless and on the verge of suicide into a strong warrior, and he called himself Venom because that was what he was forced to spew out to the public at the time. That, my friends, is Venom. How does the film handle this character? He fakes a picture of Spider-Man robbing a bank and gets fired for it. He blames Peter not only for that, but for stealing a woman, Gwen Stacy, who wasn't even his. He talks about her as if he wants to marry her but isn't even in a relationship with her. Then, he goes to the church just like he did in the comics, and he asks God, I'm dead serious, to kill Peter.

Spider-Man swinging around in buildings in daylight gets old after a while. I also became invested with Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker. This feels like a more realistic portrayal, and Peter's motivations worked for me here. There are other Spider-Man movies I like better; I agree ASM has some problems.

Gwen doesn't make it, she only prepares an existing antidote. And Connors himself doesn't want to change people into lizards, it is the lizard in him that does it, remember Peter asking Connors "what if the newly added organism takes control?". Here's how I would've explained why Lizard turns evil:
    After Doctor Connors uses the lizard syrum to grow his arm back and it goes wrong and he turns into lizard, he decides he will try and help people, assuming they will accept him, he goes out to look for someone to help and while he's crossing the street a car drives towards him and before it hits the lizard, he uses his claw to stop the car and people start screaming and calling the cops. The police arrive and the lizard apologizes to them and tries to convince he didn't mean to cause harm. The police don't seem to believe him since, well, he's a giant talking lizard. The lizard tries to walk closer to a police offer to tell him he's not bad when that police officer shoots him in fear and the rest of the cops shoot at him, Lizard yells that he's not bad and that he's trying to help. Meanwhile the police shoot at him he gets enraged and tries to stop them by using his tail to knock them down.
    The lizard then realizes that people won't accept him. So he says "If they wont accept me, they'll learn to accept me. They'll learm to accept me once they know how it feels to be like me"
    This will pretty much explain why he plans to turn others into lizards.
    Just a little something I think could've helped explain why Lizard suddenly turns bad. Feel free to add or leave your thoughts

      Why? The Amazing Spider-Man takes its characters seriously, has a hero who always knows how to get out of a tight situation, a female character who actually HELPS Spider-Man instead of needing rescued & whining like a little tool, and in this movie, Peter Parker actually learns how his actions can inspire people, how they too can have the courage to survive. The old movies never had any of that.

    • @DragaoFilipe09
      @DragaoFilipe09 8 років тому +5

      Christian Tyler Hannah But its too cliche. Also spiderman is so unlikable, the bad guy is so stupid and the romance does not make sense at all. The movie feels like its forced. You cant see spiderman, you see the actor. When the movie is bad, it does not matter what it have in difference. It just matter that its a torture to watch it.

    I have a few qualms with this review. While I agree that I don't like the suit, your point that he should be able to afford a better suit because he's able to afford the web shooters that are able to hold the weight of cars, well he didn't exactly make them. Oscorp made the webbing. If you looked at the one scene where Peter's researching, you can see clear as day that Oscorp develops the webbing which Peter pretty much borrows in order to fashion his own web shooters. He probably made the actual web shooters themselves from small scraps lying around. Also there's more than just that one scene where Spider-Man has quips. You can see him taunting the Lizard in the high school for example, when he exclaims, "someone's been a bad lizard". That's like the Spider-Man I know and love.
    Also in regards to Peter abandoning his quest for Uncle Ben, I believe during the bridge scene, after he saved that kid, he finally understood what Uncle Ben was talking about: the responsibility of being a hero. Cause think about it, Peter only became Spider-Man to hunt down Uncle Ben's killer, for revenge. He never once thought of the responsibility of being Spider-Man at all. Imagine it like this, in the original comics when Peter learns of Uncle Ben's death, he hunts the burglar like nothing else. When he discovers that the burglar was the same person he let escape at the wrestling arena, he has this huge amount of guilt that sweeps over him. In here Peter already knows that the guy he lets escape was the guy who killed Uncle Ben. He then learns Uncle Ben's lesson of responsibility. It's handled differently here. While chasing the man who's killed Uncle Ben, he saves a child and upon seeing the father react to his son being saved, he learns right then and there the lesson of responsibility in the most heroic fashion you can learn it. He doesn't need to find Uncle Ben's killer anymore because he's not out for revenge anymore. He's out for doing what is right. Honestly that bridge scene alone made the movie for me, it shows more heroism than the Raimi trilogy ever could do.
    Also the point you made about the city finally caring for Spider-Man at the ending, you could say the same thing about the first Spider-Man. You never see the city of New York as a character where they hate Spider-Man in that movie so why should we care if they're all suddenly supporting him.
    And in regards to Gwen Stacy, she works at the Oscorp lab, plus she's hella smart. Second in her class only behind Peter. If Peter can make web shooters, why shouldn't she be able to make a serum for this Lizard project that's happening in the same area she works in. I wouldn't put it past me that she picked up a few things about how to do a few cross-species genetics. If you've read a comic, you'd know she's hella smart. Plus at least she actually does something, compared to Mary Jane in the Raimi movies, who's job is pretty much just the damsel in distress. it's unsettling to me that you don't give credit to the resourcefulness of Gwen Stacy played by Emma Stone but you praise the incredibly lackluster performance of Kristen Dunst's Mary Jane who is only remembered for getting captured all the fucking time. She's nothing like the Mary Jane in the comics, who knows how to get out of trouble and is able to hold her own really well. Her character deserves little to no praise. Why you don't give the same recognition to Emma Stone is beyond me because she at least does something in this movie besides getting captured.
    I do agree with some of your points like the Lizard needing motivation and my fury with them deleting essential scenes that would help the plot. That scene with his son would have been a perfect addition and why they got rid of it is beyond me. But I feel like you're extremely biased towards the trilogy. I mean I can respect that. They just were't my cup of tea and I will forever say Spider-Man 3 is far worse than TASM. No hard feelings, you have your opinion, and I have mine. I just wish you did give this film a little bit more of a shot. I know character motivations were pretty fucked, but most of your other qualms I just can't agree with since they're pretty flawed imo at least.

    • @swanpride
      @swanpride 8 років тому

      +hadd93 Exactly. Though the motivation of Doctor Connors is clear to me, he really wants to be "whole" again and he takes the stuff even though testing isn't done yet because his laboratory is about to get shut down and he is about to loose access to it. The scene with the son would make it even better, but even without it, you know what he is about.
