Bouchard traded in her tennis career to become a celebrity. Much like Ronda Rousey.
You are out of your mind adding Kuznetsova to this list and not Dementieva or Rios. No Slam winner should be on this list and if so--you better add Roddick to this list or Ivanisevic. Why not Capriati? She lost half a decade in the 90's due to her "issues." 🤨
Rios does not belong on this list, are you crazy?
@@elektrik_exekutioner6822 I said what I said. Rios lost to Petr Korda in the AO Final. Petr Korda! Rios is the EPITOME of not living up to his potential. You can add Guillermo Coria to this list too for losing to Gaudio in the FO final.😂
@@xicanosfxicanosf4433 Both Rios and Coria have reached 1 major final, that's as good as it gets for them. Just because they both lost 1 match they were expected to win doesn't mean they never lived up to their potential. Your argument doesn't make any sense.
@@elektrik_exekutioner6822 what? That doesn’t mean u didn’t meet your potential. Those players deserved at least a slam
@@jensenaussie4453 Maybe they did. But that doesn't mean they didn't live up to their potential.
putting kuznetsova in the same basket as Donald Young and Eugenie Bouchard is just disrespectful
Young was so overrated as a junior.. He is small, slow and not very athletic. All he had was great hands, which is not enough in the men's pro game.
Laura Robson: won Wimbledon girls in 2008 and became the first British female player to reach the 4th round of a grand slam in 15 years at USO 2012, was named WTA newcomer of the year in 2012 and reached the 4th round of Wimbledon 2013 but after that she suffered injuries and had long absences never reached the same heights and retired in 2022.
She was quite a talent but then beset by injuries she never capitalized on her talent. Another player is Sabine Lisicki.
Where is maybe the greatest talents of them all? David Nalbandian...
This one for sure. Man simply didn’t care about playing tennis and went to race cars LOL
No excuse for him not winning a major or two.
@@krogdog Don't forget about his bad luck in numerous semis.
I feel it's a bit unfair to include players whose careers were cut short due to (or plagued with) injury and other health related problems (Soderling, Kuznetsova, Jaeger). It's a shame that they couldn't live up to their potential but definitely not any fault of their own.
Also I get that Kuznetsova is on the list because she didn't achieve as many titles as expected, but going by that criteria Stephens would be a better candidate, so much talent and potential yet unmotivated
Tomic I would include too
Tomic was never that great
Tomic was very hyped up as a youngster. Also I remember him early on giving Cilic a run for his money.
Kuznetsova has a poor record against the greats players like Henin, Serena, Clijsters etc. She even has a losing record against Sharapova. She probally could of won more but often loses matches against some of the greats so no she didn't underachieved. Not many player can say that they have won 2 Grand Slams
If you put Soderling in the list I think I'll choose Del Potro
us open*1 Indian Wells*1 Davis cup*1 his record might be better than all player in your list
but without injury
maybe he can get 3 grand slam like Stan or 14 1000master like Andy
Nalbandian, Del Potro, Dolgopolov... all underachievers with huge talents
Robin Soderling got a crazy Auto-Immune disease
Funny that Soderling and Ancic got Mono which forced them into retirement. Federer got Mono, but was able to withstand it. The Mono did hurt him as it came when he was still in his prime, like 2009 I believe. Not sure Fed was quite as good after recovering from it,
In some sense Ana Ivanović and Jelena Janković could very well both be on the list. When they came on the scene it felt like they could dominate the tour or at least be in the top 10 for years to come. Alas, their era of dominance lasted surprisingly briefly and they have but one Slam combined to show for it.
Verdasco, Davidenko, Tsonga, Ferrer, Berdych, Thomas, Lopez,.......
WEAK ERA RIGHT?! yeah they never reached their potential because in their primes a certain someone would hand it to them time and time again
Dont think ferrer can be classified as an underachiever, his record is supreme albeit never having the tools to take it to the best, he was the best of the rest and one of the most consistent players ever
Fognini as well
Fernando Verdasco, one of my favourite matches was against Nadal in semi if Australian Open...2009 I think.
Berdych was a mystery... He was ranked in the top 10 for many years, but hardly ever won a tournament. He could advance to the semifinals in a grand slam, which is a great achievement, and then lose to a player ranked 100 in a final of an ATP 250 tournament. How is it possible?
Tomas was a handsome, amazing player. I'm not sure why he never won a slam. He had that great run to the Wimbledon Final and I thought he'd eventually win a slam. He was in the top 5 for years.
Rios, Myskina, Dementieva, Robson, Arazi, Leconte, DelPo, Goran, from the top of my head. All - for one reason or another - could've done better. Sometimes the game just isn't fair...
Ana Ivanovic definitely
Man you’re delusionnal about Kuznetsova
And as a french i would have mentionned Richard Gasquet over Gael Monfils as he was considered the GOAT of young categories and finally managed ton never reach a GS final or top 5 ranking
Also Mecir, Rios, Nalbandian, Tsonga, Gasquet.
Brian Gottfried, Radek Stepanek, Roscoe Tanner, Miloslav Mecir.
Imagine Kyrgios with the work ethic of nadal, djokovic or federer
Needs a Makeover and Therapy
Guy acts like a brain rotted TikTok teenager and he’s like 5 years my senior, literal manchild
Imagine Kyrgios with a wrist that worked, a knee that worked, a hip that worked, a spine that worked, a shoulder that worked, an elbow that worked...look at the wikipedia entry. He's been constantly injured with his huge style of play since he was 17. Being in continual pain does give you the odd frustration on court. But don't worry, this latest double wrist surgery will probably finish him. Unless it's a good theatrical makeup job.
@sportslover2356 Imagine Kyrios doing some conditioning to minimise the risk of injuries. Nope - can't do that. Imagine your taxes paying for his tennis training at the Australian Institute of Sport & the countless hours put in by sports scientists & coaches there only to see him never bother to put in the work himself to realise his potential. There are many, many players who play with pain who don't behave the way he did.
Not impressed.
What about Tracy Austin ? Injuries ruled her out but she good enough to rival Chris/ Martina.
Gabriela Sabatini should be on this list!
I think Kuznetsova wasn't about injuries. She actually played 40 straight grand slam main draws, or basically 10 straight years. It really was her nerves that got the best of her. She won 18 titles; but was runner up 24x. She reached 13 Premier/Tier 1 finals but only won 2. She reached 42 singles finals; comparable to Sharapova's 59. She reached the quarterfinals of a slam 16x but only got past that round 5x.
No, she's a headcase. That's all. End of story. But her matches against Schiavone were pure tennis gold. That was a match-up made in heaven.
I agree with you. Should not be on this list .tennis magazine named her a basher .meaning she over hit often
How come Anna Kournikova is not in the list?
Cos she was never that good.
She was more commercial then tennis. He wasn’t that good really but she was stunning
Marcus Willis is probably the GOAT of underachiever. This guy beat Rublev und Medwedew in Wimbledon, was only stopped by Roger himself - and that was his one and only attempt to play seriuos professional Tennis.
Bernard Tomic
Where's Naomi Osaka? She should have been on this list yesterday.
Gulbis and Djokovic went on same tennis academy . In Germany - both were great hopes and talents Niki Pilic students of the game . Pilic said he expected world career from Gulbis ahead of Novak .
you missed Tomic and Hingis!
Hingis??!!! Really??? She's in the Tennis Hall of Fame and a multiple grand slam winner as a teenager. She's still one of the youngest on record to win a grand slam. She also had a very successful doubles career. C'mon now...
@jonj.2418 sure. But she was destined to be one the greatest. 19 year old 5 time grand slam champion. But her temperament and injuries marred her career forcing her to retire at 22. Came back after 4 years then had to retire again. Imagine if she had played through her prime years
Precaution against injuries must definitely be considered during training. I tend to blame the Coaches/trainers when their player gets serious injuries. They should know
JMDP?
Anna chakvetadze
Dinara Safina could have given the list a unique reason - detrimental coaching.
I had no idea Gulbis reached the top 10
What about Fognini. I think.he is an underachiever.
I thought that Jimmy Arias and Andrea Temesvari were both going to be number one back in the day.
What they all have on common... Attitude issues!!
Sadly Dominic Thiem should've been on this list
Pretty soon Zverev, Tsitsipas, Raducanu and Osaka all will be subjects of this discussion...Yes, i know that Osaka has won 4 grand slams already, but just like the author of this video claims Kuznetsova had the biggest potential of all that he included here (although i concur and i think it is Bouchard...) Osaka is that kinda of player for this "still" young generation! Give it 5-6 slamless seasons more and you will have to include her in this list...
Raducanu has a Grand Slam so she's proven herself
@@jonfreeman9682 So did Kuzntesova and she is featured in this video! The point of the argument opf this video is about players not living up to their potential, rather than winning their first grand slam versus not winning it! LOL Raducanu was hyped by the media (and still is) like 2nd Jesus coming, yet did nothnig to leave up to that hype ever since that USO title! I understand that she is still young and there's enough time and bla bla bla, but her results dropped from being grand slam champion to not even able to win a single title, not even of the lowest level for almost one and a half year! Also did you even watch video fully? i doubt it...
@@jonfreeman9682 According to how Raducanu is hyped she should be 3-4 grand slam champion by now at very least, should have close to 20 titles already and holding number one ranking for a year now!...Amount of hyped she is getting is disproportianate to the amount of her achievements sicne that USO run...
@@Summon256 Well she's still young and developing her game so give her time. When Naomi Osaka won her first Grand Slam she was able to go on and win 3 more beating top players like Serena Williams. Some players just need a little more time. Remember when Eugenie Bouchard made Wimbledon finals and everyone hyped her as the next wonder thing with endorsements pouring in like no tomorrow. Well it turns out she peaked early and never tasted anything like that again. Same thing happened with Sabine Lisicki. Tennis is a brutal solitary sport. By That measure Raducanu and Kuzy both did great to have Grand Slams.
How many slams did you think Osaka could’ve won if she was more serious
Hopefully Raducanu will retire soon
Kyrgios could easily have won several grand slams and be a top 10 player... He's incredibly talented. What went wrong? I don't understand...
He doesn't put in the effort of training, lack of mental strength etc.
Read his entry in wikipedia. Continual massive injury coupled with continual racist hatred by his country - famous for racism in all sports. By 2019 he was a total mess with relentless hate articles. He could play a four hour match and win, smash one racquet and the media would show a picture of his racquet - without telling the readers that he won.
@@Mzee1084 Media bullying forcing him to play through injury. People like you jeering constantly. Racist heckling on and off the court. clinical depression and self-harm which helps to hide the pain.
Guy El Monte's he plays too far behind the Baseline that's why it doesn't beep you guys in the in the quarterfinals of the US Open against better teenie in a tiebreaker he was playing 15 ft behind the Baseline not going for winners not trying to win the match trying to have the other guy lose the match that's not how you play professional tennis that's not how you play tennis at all at my book
David Nalbandian is easily one of the hugest wastes of potential. He could’ve won 5-10 majors but was so injury-prone due to his lack of fitness.
Also, who knows what history is going to say about Emma Raducanu. She might go down as the biggest fluke in the history of tennis 🎾
I really like Raducanu's strokes. IMHO, the best in the women's game.
Putting Kyrgios and Bouchard alongside Soderling constitutes a rather big insult to Soderling. Soderling's got seerrrious game till his illness derailed his career...
You have Kuznetsova on the list but not Kurnikova, you are casual 😂😂
Reading the comments, I think it is clear that dissapointing players who never reached their potential like Bouchard, Kyrgios, Bagdhatis, Gulbis, Nalbandian, Gasquet, Monfils, Donald Young, etc do not belong with players who had injuries or had to play superior players. Soderling lost to Roger and Rafa in 6 out of 8 GS and then came mono. Kuznetsova and Dementieva lost to Serena, Henin and Venus. Thiem only GS came when he did not have to play Rafa or Nole and then he got injured. That is not a dissapointing a career at all.
Kyrgios has been continually injured and playing through pain since he was seventeen. If you look at his wikipedia entry you will see that he retired or ended his season often because of knee, wrist, hip, shoulder, back injuries - over and over again. But Australian sport does not allow for injuries in male players so he was always shoved back onto the court too early and reinjured himself. He was frequently mocked and if he 'appeared' to have injured himself the media said he was shamming. By the time he ended up in surgery or rehab they said he was scared to play.
in the era of Borg,Connors, Mc Enroe, Lendl, I think the biggest " underachiever " was Vitas Gerulaitis. Though he won the Australian Open , he never won either the French Open or the Us Open or Wimbledon ( reached the final at the Open 1979 and at the French 1980 , beaten each time in straight sets by Mc Enroe and Borg... ).Though his huge talent he did not have the bright career of a Borg, Connors, Mc Enroe, Lendl or even Vilas ...
Roddick Roddick Roddick
What about safin
Hmmm Daniela hantuchova, with a lot of potential, only won 2 indian wells & other tittles.. you Can Also add to the list guillermo Coria, Gastón gaudio, Elena dementieva,
She wasn't that good
Kokkinakis, cash, pernfors, muster, coria, Rios, capriati, Hingis, stosur, barty, Safina, safin, dimitrov, casquet, berdych, chung, kounikova, clijsters, henin, Seles, dokic, raonic,
You need to look at the intense injury list for Kokkinaks and chung - just for starters.
Forgot Del Potro
Oh but everybody adores delpo. You can't put him on a negative we all hate list. Delpo's injuries were the same as kyrgios.
Fish?
Karolína Plíšková was once the number one in the world for eight weeks and reached two GS finals. But that's it. She is tall, has a huge serve and solid backhand. She could have been the number one for many years and should have won Wimbledon at least once. But she did not. It is unlikely she ever will. Today she is no. 20 in the world. Still a great career winning 25 Mio in price money alone. That is maybe one of the biggest problems in WTA Tennis. Money comes in without outstanding results quickly causing demotivation.
What about Dinara Safina?
Saw her play in Cincy when she was at the top of her game. She literally could not keep the ball in play. I could not believe how bad she was.
@@walliegirl2 You need to elaborate. What year was this? 2009 when she lost in the final? 2010 when she lost in the second round and fell to #70 in the world due to back issues that she never overcame? Don't forget that Steffi Graf had the same problem in the semifinals of the French Open in 1991 (40+ UFE in 14 games) every player has very bad days ( Clijsters 2010 Australian Open third round)
Bernard Tomic
Kyrgios just enjoys the game, he’s not as serious as others like Rafa and Novak
He literally said he didn't really like tennis at one point.
It destroyed him as a person and a player. Watch the interview with Jay Shetty On Purpose December 2023@@chrisf9156
I put Emma Raducanu on this list! She seems to be following the career path of Genie Bouchard!😮
How can you say that. She is still just a kid. imho, her strokes are the best on tour.
Tomic
I'd put Simona Halep over Kuznetsova here, as her winning only 2x Majors is far less than she could have done being so dominant between 2014 and 2020.
You can add Tsitsipas to the list.
I dislike him (even though I'm Greek) but I can't see how he is a fit on the list. He is 24 and he only lacks a Grand slam
Tsonga and Del Potro too
"When she made her ATP debut"🤦♂️
Dude can't even tell the difference between ATP and WTA
He probably just misspoke. Calm down
@@onyx081 Never!
Aaron Krickstein
Come on, Krickstein had no athletic talent. Saw him play Patrick McEnroe at the junior clays. He got the most out of what he had - smart player.
Bouchard should be on the list at least twice - legend in her own mind 🙄
She was never good except for one magical season she got lucky draws in two Grand Slams.
Tracy Austin also very much worthy to be on this list. Two time US Open champion, had to retire very early, at 21, similar to Jaeger.
I don't see Kuzi that high on the list. She's a modern Sanchez-Vicario.
I would also put Andy Roddick on the list.
Gulbis was big threat
If you have kuznetsova, you needed marat safin
Bernard tomic and Hyeon Chung
He mentions the greatest female players of all time and doesn't mention Graf????
That was my first thought too! 🤔
Kyrgios is really a disappointment. I had hope he will emerge a strong competitor against the big 3 but he didn't. However, he still have the time to change and become a great player.
Kyrgios was killed off by the media. He had no idea how to handle the expectations and the way he failed the Australian public. They destroyed him and by 2018 he was already suicidal. Nobody cared except Andy Murray. The media kept attacking him and still do.
