- To further our dive into “Rap Fans React K Pop” series, we’ve got an EXO reaction. Particularly, their song 2016 song, “Monster”. Slowly but surely, we’re rounding out the bases on the different pockets of K Pop. The goal is to check out a few different acts so we could have a more informed opinion on the genre as a whole.

Exo are known for their R&B and soul music. Check out their songs sweet lies, ya ya ya, and tempo it’s very different from this. If you want super hype songs check out Obsession, ko ko bop and love shot. They have many different sounds and have won many awards for their music. They even have the record for fastest sold out concert at 0.2 seconds.

EXO is one of the biggest kpop groups
It’s sad that their company doesn’t promote them in West at all even tho they have many west fans as well like myself (they marketed towards Asia)
But even without promotion they have managed to gain many international fans and they were even called to play at Coachella(but their company didn’t let them for whatever reason)
They have many many records and they have also performed at Olympic Games as representatives of kpop
Their music is top tier u have to listen to more of them and not only their title tracks but also their b sides

Because they went straight for a concert urgently without promotions + i read an article from 2017 that said people camped outside and it was hard for the staff to control them but the show was successful + ur so lucky that u went to their concert
I think it’s because they debuted around an era where Kpop was still mostly focused in Asia, also with their concept of having Exo m and Exo K directly felt like way more Asian oriented. Ofc A lot of groups were touring in the US and Europe but it was on a way smaller scale that what they had in Asia. exo toured in Asia in such big venues I guess SM decided to focus on this region because It was more profitable, and they were already planning to make groups more oriented towards the western market ( like nct) but in between Kpop became big globally and that’s why it feels like there’s a void not having Exo touring worldwide but honestly I feel like SM doesn’t really plan on really expend them in the western market which is not forcefully a wrong thing. I honestly don’t get the wave of groups and company doing the most to sell groups to the western industry, I feel like it’s actually making Kpop loosing its charm trying to westernize more to appeal the US/ European market. Exo is getting their bag in Asia and are amongst the most known so aside touring to please fans because they still have fans worldwide I don’t see SM moving Exo to a more western audience.

I will love to introduce my favorite group to you gyus, so welcome to *"EXO-planet"* , actually they are one of the biggest band in Kpop, if all the other groups are talented, EXO are monsters, they got every thing specially vocals (all the members are vocally amazing, the vocalist can Rapp and the main rapper sing crazy, they have the best vicalist and the best dancers in kpop), EXO's *Chen* has 4 octave vocal range can hit 5 female key, they sing all music styles, but officially they are kings of RnB, also as you see all of them are superb dancer,
PS: Korean Government Officially Awarded EXO With The Title *“The Nation’s Pick”* , they are the most awarded band in Kpop and 4th in the world (till last year - even when they boycotted all awards shows since 2017 - this year they may have lost this position) kings of vocals, not well know in western country lack of promotion.

Oh EXO is one of those big big groups
They are trendsetters and idols of idols
EXO started out with about 12 members. They debuted in 2012. It was two subunits, EXO-K Korean and EXO-M Mandarin. There was some ish and three of the members (Mandarin)left. After they left, they created subunits EXO-CBX and EXO-SC
Although, I Stan (ride or die) BTS, EXO is fantastic. Chen, Kai, Baekhyun, Chanyeol. The guys have solo albums too. ✌🏾
EXO is one of the top vocal groups in the business. They have done a number of genres with the essence of R&B.
Their songs like Tempo, Call Me Baby, Overdose are upbeat, Don't Fight The Feeling is a bright piece.
I would also recommend their B-sides like Sweet Lies, Ya Ya Ya, and Paradise.

They received the first Prime Minister's award at the 2017 Korean Popular Culture and Arts Awards for their contribution to Korean culture. They were included in the TOP-50 most popular male groups in the world of the last decade according to "24/7 Wall St" (EXO took the 10th place, becoming the only representative of Asia, indicators in Billboard, Spotify and Wikipedia were taken into account). They were included in the Guinness Book of Records as the group that received the largest number of daesans at the MAMA Award. They are the security ambassadors of Seoul.

Everything EXO is involved in, and I literally mean almost everything -- which includes "Monster" -- is connected in some way to their concept and storyline. EXO's MVs are kind of like a movie -- it's a movie that has been going on for the past 9+ years -- since predebut -- and it has no sign of coming to an end any time soon. The one thing you have to keep in mind with all of EXO's MVs, and I really mean all of them -- including their sub-sub-unit MVs and a majority of the member's solo MVs. And because Baekhyun and Kai are involved, even SuperM's storyline -- is that they are all connected and they all tell a little more of EXO's story.
"Monster" was released in 2016, so there are 9 members in this MV.
EXO debuted in 2012, and in order to really understand EXO you need to start from the very beginning and watch both of their "Mama" MVs -- EXO-K (Korean) and EXO-M (Mandarin Chinese) versions. From day one, EXO's concept is that they are aliens from Planet Exo and they came to Earth with superpowers to protect the Tree of Life from the Red Forces. Each of the members has a superpower that is unique to them.
Exo, as in exoskeleton, means "outer," so as a member of EXO they are outside the ordinary.The group's concept comes from the real term exoplanet, which is a term that is used for a planet that is outside our solar system, so their name was chosen to represent the fact that they are stars that are "out of this world" when it comes to their talents.
So each new MV or project from EXO tells another part of the story, and over the years we fans have started to create a timeline and idea of what we think each part of the story is telling us.
As the English lines in "Monster" say ... They're "Creeping, Creeping Creeping .... Creeping in your heart babe" "You can call me Monster (because) I'm creeping in your heart babe." "She got me goin' crazy." The song's called "Monster," so the words are about acting like a monster: "Don't be afraid, love is the way ... i'm sorry, you make me sooo craaaazzzy, you know you dooooo."
So the floating watch and the car that is on fire in reverse, etc., I think was -- on top of being a metaphor in the story -- also supposed to be the members using their superpowers. And the snake, like a monster, mirrors the beat of the song, which kind of slithers like a snake as a metaphor for the way the guy slithers in and out of the relationship stealing warmth and affection from the girl, but in the end, leaving her cold and alone like a cold-blooded snake, etc.
However, the lyrics of the song have very little to do with the story in the MV. You should look up an English translation of the lyrics. Because the lyrics tell a different story than the story in the MV. In the song the members are talking about a girl and they are telling the girl that "You can call me Monster" because I know I am bad for you and I will ruin you. I know that when we are over that I will have destroyed everything that is good about you, but I don't care because I want you so much that it doesn't matter to me. But the MV is about EXO's origin story and about the fact that they have come to Earth on a mission.
Also, the majority of the choreography for "Monster" has to do with the members using their powers, so when/if you watch the dance practice and/or watch a live performance, if you know what you are looking for, you will see that each move is done for a very specific reason.
The X they make to represent EXO is only the beginning of the story in their choreography. Every move of the choreography has been designed to be an extension of their story and it uses elements of their dance to represent several of the members using their powers. For example, D.O. has the power of super strength, so during his part in the song and choreography you will see that he waves his hands and the other members are pushed away from him or pulled toward him. When you see Suho in the middle of the group and they have a hold of his arms, he rotates his body around like swirling water because Suho has the power to control water. Xiumin has the power to control snow/ice/frost, so during one part of the choreography you will see that each of the members pause as if frozen as he moves in front of them. Sehun has the power to control wind, so during his parts, you will see the other members shuffle around him as if they are creating a windstorm. And the part where they are sitting on the ground is supposed to represent a sundial -- EXO gets their power from the eclipse and their powers are affected by planetary and solar phenomenon, so the sundial is meant to represent the passing of time and their connection to the sun.
You should also make note that "Lotto" is a prequel to "Monster," so when you watch "Lotto," just keep in mind that what you saw happen in "Monster" is what is going to take place after or in conjunction with the events in "Lotto".
How "Monster" and "Lotto" tie into EXOs larger storyline is a little open ended, but because "Lotto" is thought to be the prequel to "Monster," I think the story starts out in "Lotto" where the members have somehow infiltrated this big gambling ring and are undercover as they work to uncover a clue or something they need in order to accomplish their tasks here on Earth. I think the underground gambling establishment is run by a gang of bad guys who are probably members of the Red Force.
"Lotto" is where we are introduced to a girl who is being held captive. And ultimately, I think what EXO are trying to do is rescue the girl from the Red Force, but they are trying to do it without blowing their cover or being found out. So, that's why you see in "Lotto," and continued in "Monster," the members are fighting against the police because the police have come in to take down the gambling ring and rescue the girl, which is also what EXO are trying to do. However, the members of EXO don't want to be discovered, so they play along as if they are part of the bad guys. EXO are supposed to be going about their tasks here on Earth incognito, and humanity is never supposed to find out that EXO are other-worldly beings, so they are trying to keep a low profile.
As we see in the end of "Monster," Baekhyun disguises himself as one of the police and helps the other members escape from the back of the police van before they are taken to jail and/or captured by the Red Force, etc.
You also see Lay crouched in the middle of what looks like a pile of people -- I'm not sure whether these are the FBI agents, or if these are members of the Red Force -- and I think he is checking to make sure they are OK and possibly trying to use his power of healing to fix things and heal the injured.
Because some theories believe that EXO are traveling between time periods and dimensions, I think in "Monster" they also might be showing how some of the members are arriving on scene at different moments in the timeline of events that are taking place in the MV -- the members don't necessarily arrive at the location together -- as explained in their Pathcode teaser videos leading up to their "Call Me Baby" comeback. For instance, in "Monster" you also see Kai standing on or near a giant pile of people as well, and he seems to be standing over them. Some have pointed to this as possibly showing evil X-EXO Kai -- Kai's alter ego clone that was created by the Red Forced and introduced in EXO's "Obsession" MV -- who has done something bad, but I think this may be showing good EXO Kai, who has just shown up at that moment, observing what has taken place. Because Kai has the power of teleportation he is the one that is in charge of bringing the members together and traveling between time and space, so I think he has shown up from a different time or place and is now trying to figure out what has happened, etc.
In EXO's "Obsession" MV the members in the bright colored clothing with the crazy makeup and hair are supposed to be X-EXO and the ones in the black or dark colored clothing are supposed to be EXO. So, in the parts where they are dressed in all black in "Monster" I think this is showing EXO, and where you see them in the clothing with red accents, this might by showing X-EXO. At the time when "Monster" was first released, we had no idea about X-EXO's existence, but since "Obsession", we have started to go back and reanalyze some of their older MVs, and it appears that what we thought was always EXO, may have been in fact X-EXO some of the time.
As you can see, EXO's story is always evolving and changing, and just when you think you have one part understood, SM introduces a new piece of the story and changes the direction of the narrative.
Also pay attention to when you see red and blue light. As mentioned, in EXO's MVs when you see red light this is where the Red Force has control, and when you see blue light this is where EXO has the upperhand. However, if you see purple light this is when EXO and the Red Force are battling for control -- red and blue mixed together make purple.
Unfortunately, as you can see, what makes EXO's storyline even more difficult to follow is the fact that nothing is ever in chronological order. So you really have to pay close attention to every detail, to even begin to make connections.

As ARMY it makes me proud when people like EXO. They deserve the same respect and popularity as BTS, these two debuted almost at the same era. They've immense talents, concepts and discography but sadly their label company does a shitty job at marketing them. I wonder where they'd have been otherwise.
EXO has many genres. but mostly they are more Rnb style. Their vocals are amazing, they are known as the king of vocals. EXO consists of 9 members. Every member has talent.

Exo is a really good group, I'd also suggest listening to p1harmony, they are a rookie group but they have high potential and I loved their newest comeback called "do it like this"!
To say that in EXO someone is better and someone is worse is simply IMPOSSIBLE because absolutely every participant is unrealistically talented, this is literally an IDEAL GROUP. Every EXO group and solo album is on a completely different level to this day, even after 10 years of career. I am absolutely not afraid to say that EXO is a real K-POP, now there are countless groups in the fourth generation, but they absolutely do not stand out in any way, trying to focus more and more on the West and POP music, thereby becoming monotonous and disposable. EXO is the only band in the entire K-POP industry, by the way, to this day where literally every member sings amazingly, including rappers and dancers. Minute popularity does not determine the talent and legendarity of the artist, because even after 10 years of his career, EXO songs are literally sung by the whole of Asia, because EXO is the real K-POP. I will never stop admiring this amazing band, even if 40 years pass, let a billion more bands like bts be released, they will never surpass EXO because their music is timeless, this is what defines the legendary artist.

First subgroup EXO-K, leader Suho became the 1st member(trainee) of SM Entertainment in 2006; the following year 2nd member Kai by his father’s encouragement auditioned and got accepted; same time Chanyeol won 2nd place in Smart Model Contest and Sehun had to go through four auditions for 2 years before getting accepted. The subgroup’s last two members(trainees) to go into EXO-K during 2010/2011 were D.O and Baekhyun. Every XO-M subgroup leader Kris went through Canada’s Global Auditioning around the same time Lay went for an audition at Changsha; both subsequently moved to South Korea, while Xiumin goes with a friend to audition winning 2nd place he became the next member(not including the friend) to join EXO-M in 2008. Within two years LuHan and Tao were scouted into SM by one of the company representatives in Myeong-dong and during a talent show, the last member to join the subgroup EXO-M was Chen in 2011. In December 2011 they’d finalized their group name to EXO; which is short for “EXOplanet”. Their first tv performance was at SBS’s Annual Gayo Daejun Event on Dec 29th. They’ve won many awards and nominations for their variety of creative music genres, solo projects, show appearances and performances.
*The title track “Overdose” of their third extended play album ‘Overdose’ is a catchy and popular song that EXO-K along with EXO-M which all 12 members are present) brings a hip-hop R&B based urban dance tempo made by collaboration of a world renowned producing team ‘The Underdogs’ who worked along with Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, Chris Brown and Kenzie who wrote number of hit tracks. The amazing catchy lyrics describes a man’s fatal & powerfully addictive love as if overdosing on sweet drugs in a realistic sensuous manner while stuck in a Maze attracting music addicts worldwide. Its also was the last song / music video before members Kris Wu & LuHan left the group and company then later down the road Tao decided it was best for him to leave but it wasn’t because of the members, it was of the mistreatment on top of other things just because they were Chinese (South Korean & China dont get along at all) and also during that time LAY had to go back forth to China for his solo projects since then he’s been having to be absent for a long awhile but never left the group and continues promoting as EXO member within his solo work. Zhang Yi-Xing (LAY) made a solo comeback with his first full album released two tracks; pre-release “Give Me A Chance” which was on his bday within the same week dropped title track “Namanana”. As of right now he’s still currently having to promote as an active solo artist for the past five years now and he also had finally made it to the 2019 Grammys red carpet along with BTS and GOT7 Jackson Wang. LAY played a main role in a chinese drama called “The Golden Eyes” which you can watch with VIKI TV app with free standard membership.* Before pandemic Lay was traveling back forth to China promoting his solo music on top of EXO which has been causing non-stop childish fanwars between international, korean, and local fandoms since China literally has kept him on his toes doing overload of Chinese related events on top of his overly busy schedule. He has constantly said he tries to continue helping his brothers EXO when he can but on low-key terms; also he has a previous single track/MV called “Grandma” which is about his deep love & gratitude for his grandmother who he misses very much where I heard he filmed in his old hometown.
Kai has a few dramas and movies that he’s done overtime & some artist collaborations along with Baekhyun who also has some artist collaborations of his own. Kyungsoo (D.O) has a few films and dramas that he’s starred in. Chanyeol had starred in drama called “Missing Nine” and has some solo songs where he sings & raps. Suho with Baekhyun had dominated fashion world when they attended Privé Alliance Event. Xiumin enlisted April 2019 and month later D.O decided its best to enlist early so he enlisted June 2019. Suho will be enlisting toward the end of the year. On other hand it’s reported that Chen, one of main vocalists is the first korean member of EXO to make a solo debut but he’s not the first EXO member overall to go solo. They are still a group; the members themselves are preparing for the next step in their career, so when the older members have to enlist for at least 1 1/2 to 2 whole years then return they have something to fall back on until the rest of the members return from military. On the other hand, Kris had played a role in the third XXX: Return of Xander Cage movie with Vin Diesel along with other roles before that and Luhan has also been in some chinese movies & dramas. Tao has a previous comeback called “AI”, the MV and song very interesting (I unfortunately haven’t heard much about Kris, Luhan, and Tao) besides their acting. Since there’s not much of EXO-M, Chen & Xiumin were added to EXO-K until LAY can someday return from his solo projects; he NEVER left the group nor has any plans to leave either.
Lay has stated in many interviews that is he’s still part of EXO and doesn’t have plan on leaving the group, he’ll always be there for his brothers when he can be when they need him and also he’s said that “Namanana” (which is his first solo title album) he made the word up that was inspired by the lion king song “Hakuna Matata”, his role is a traveling postman. He filmed in Western Australia and that one scene is called Pink Lake (Lol yes it’s a real lake) and another scene I believe it shows that he gains his healing [unicorn] superpower back from his power orb after opening the package which indicts he’s still with EXO. EXO is the only group that has consistent story line since debut... so, every EXO's mvs are related to each other.. it'll be complicated for u guys to understand the story line bcoz u just discovered them 😅 but I'll appreciate it if you react to them more.. maybe, Obsession next? or MAMA.. because MAMA is their debut song.. and there is an introduction of their storyline in that MV too..

I appreciate honesty, better than saying nice things when you don't really mean it, like some do just to gain views.. and it's the first time I think of Monster as "generic" hahah I don't know, every time I see this one MV I feel that it sounds profound, that the message passes to you easily, even if you don't know the meaning, I would feel that it tells a story, not only because it is very cinematic but the scenes together seem to be there for a reason, precisely because they are very specific , well but maybe this is the thought of someone who knows that the K-pop industry invests a lot in things like theories and means deeper in music videos than in the west
