Thanks for the new video. I built a 36' X 48' shop about 6 years ago here in MN. It is a pole barn type building and is fully insulated and finished inside. The roof here has to be rated for heavy snow fall but no hurricanes here. I have been pleasantly surprised how cool in the summer it stays and how warm it is in the winter. The walls are bout 8 inches thick with lots of insulation. I put in floor radiant heat also. It cost me $57,000. I also had them pour extra thick concrete floor at 6 inches thick. It has not cracked at all. It has a man door, two big windows and and 18' overhead door. It also has 14 foot high walls to accommodate my motorhome height. I am looking forward to your build.

Gosh John, I envy you. I don't have a tractor what more a stump grinder or brush mower. Maybe I'll have you call my wife and explain to her why I need those. Looking forward to seeing the start of the actual building go up. Maybe when you get ready a bunch of us should show up to help put the building up. Kind of an old barn raising.

Haha everyone with more that 1 acre should have a tractor otherwise your just wasting time, blood and sweat. I dug a few stumps out with a shovel and an ax when I first got here. That experience more than justified the cost of the stump grinder!

Thank you! I'm moving to Oklahoma and going to buy/build a large shop and this really helps with the research.

Good luck with the shop! I just went through the same process and can relate to the “sticker shock” as construction costs have skyrocketed in the past year or two. A good friend is dealing with the same thing.

Thanks! Yeah it a hard pill to swallow for sure.

In regards to a structural steel framed building to be retrofitted with a crane, you have to consider this point. All of your structural steel must be engineered and built with a future crane in mind. You cannot build it without including a provision for a crane and then install a crane at a later date simply because the steel will not be designed for the loading added by a crane.
I worked in a shop years ago where the owner had not included the crane in the original design and then incorporated one years later. A portion of the building collapsed one day under the crane load and when the insurance company did their evaluation this oversight became apparent and they were no longer liable for damages caused by the installation of a building supported bridge crane.
The local building code authority was also contacted and the crane had to be removed or the building had to be retrofitted to include crane loading. Retrofitting will also include a complete engineering study of your column pilings and grade beams which may or may not be feasible for re-enforcement. This retrofitting could cost as much as a new building in itself.

John check out R&R buildings on UA-cam,they have a unique design of building, like a pole barn, they have built shops, houses etc.If I was in the market to build a shop I would seriously consider it. Keep up the good work and good luck with your endeavours.

Buy the Materials and build a Pole Barn yourself will save you tons of money. I'm currently drawing Plans up to add a 36x60 to my current shop 36x24, doing the labor myself. I am not a construction guy but I know I can do this a lot cheaper. All Materials with Insulation and Interior walls is $36k.
