I love the harmonies in the original, but the Spanish language and guitar, and the way he sings it with such yearning, totally changes the context and transforms this song into the story of a man who's missing his people, his culture, his old neighborhood, his home. You feel the love for the city and the homesickness and a sense of displacement in a way that the original, as beautiful as it is, just can't convey.

Very few can take a great song and make it their own. This version is amazing. I would not say it is better than the original but it takes the song to a different level. A different dimension.
Tip my hat to Quentin Tarantino for his impeccable eye for detail , all the way down to the music. Loved this movie that I watched it 3 nights in a row and always cranked up the volume at the scene this song is playing
It's around April of 97 and I am cruising North on Route 41 back home in Chicago, Lake Shore Drive to be exact and I am riding with a lady who was special in everyway. We were both in our late 20's, finished college, she was a school teacher, had some cool dreads and was down to Earth. When this came on the cd I had burned (what a time) we got silent and enjoyed the ride and the journey of the song. Time marched on, we lost contact, I forgot her name but remember one aspect of her, I wish I knew where she was but this song at least is a great memory of her and the time.
On this same album is a cover version of " The Doors" , " Light My Fire" which which was a massive international hit for Feliciano in 1968 and brought attention to the album here, winning multiple Grammy awards.
This song, in Feliciano's version, captures alone the essence of the film. Feliciano played this song by tearing the beat away, exposing the anguish it really expresses. The protagonist of the song would like to escape from his world for a better place, but while he sings he (or she) himself knows that this will never happen: his dreams will remain unfulfilled. And just like the protagonist of the song, the dreams of all the characters in the film, in reality, will also be shattered. The title "once upon a time ..." says it all: this is represented as a beautiful story of friendship and redemption, but it is a fairy tale, the desire for something better that will never happen. A dream. Sharon Tate, her baby, her dreams and her friends won't get through the night. Their killers will end up killed or locked up for the rest of their life in prison. Rick, or whoever he represents, will never meet Polanski and his career will end in oblivion, and Cliff will follow him. Maybe only friendship can survive this. Maybe.
You worded it perfectly. And the ending of the film captures this as well, when Rick meets Sharon and her friends, and you remember that in reality, they all died. Which is why, despite the fact the film has a happy ending, it's very sombre in tone, because like you said, it represents what everyone wanted to actually happen, a fantasy. A fantasy that can never be.

My dad had the album and I pulled it out to listen to Light My Fire in 1995 and I ended up playing this song first out of curiosity to hear Jose’s version and I haven’t ever been able to get it out of my mind since that time. It’s got so much emotion in it compared to the Mamma’s and Poppa’s. It really can bring tears to your soul!
Gracias Jose Te Adoramos Te queremos desde Lima Peru Mucha Salud Papa para ti y los tuyos Bendiciones...
Very underrated progressive pop psych tune of mid 1968. Jose kicks ass with "Light My Fire" and "California Dreamin." 1968 a yr. that will always stick to my mind with so many events with gutsy issues!
My favorite song of the sixties. When they played it in that Hollywood movie I was so glad this was finally gonna get the attention it so deserves. Stone classic.
Joses' voice transcends the physical !!!
Beautiful cover. A part of me will always remain in California! Remembering the way it use to be. Couldn't live there now. Have years of memories.
This version is the best I've ever heard; hands down Awesome job José.

More than gifted talent, Jose pays from the heart !!

Absolutely love this version more than can possibly be put into words 😍😍😍
Agree
This was the correct pace for this song
Oh so beautiful. Such a lovely voice.
Jose Feliciano was a very big artist 🎨 way back .Along with Carole King ..I use to play their albums all the time ... Great Times ⏲ back then ... .
This version is better than the original, and the flamenco flare that he puts on this song nails that whole Southern California experience
Grande jose feliciano . El virtuoso de la música
Amazing version of California Dreaming - Jose's melodic tones are sublime! Cescalovesjazz!
The whole album is just beautifully played and sung.
JUST ONE NEW YORK RECORDING MANAGER HAD FAITH IN JOSE OR WE WOULD NEVER HAVE HEARD HIM,, I BOUGHT THIS ALBUM WHEN IT FIRST CAME OUT ITS CALLED ,,JOSE FELICIANO 10 TO 23
I first heard this version on Once upon a time in Hollywood was on the TV!! I cry !!Hes sings so beautiful Jose!! He actually makes me cry!!
67 years old and I remember the first time I heard him perform on Ed Sullivan... Legendary Talent!!!
Me too !!! And I’ve been playing guitar since the 70s and never realized he did this song ! Then again, in the 70s I was only six years old
All the leaves are brown
And the sky is gray
I went for a walk
On a winter's day
I'd be safe and warm
If I was in L.A
Oh, California Dreamin'
On such a winter's day, hey
I went into a church
I stopped along the way
Well, I got down on my, on my, on my bended knees
And I began to pray
You know the preacher did succumb
He knows I'm going to stay
Yes he knows cause I told him so
Oh, California dreamin'
On such a winter's day, yeah
Well baby, all the leaves, the leaves, the leaves are brown
And the sky is gray
Oh, I went for a walk
On a winter's day
I, I, I'd be safe and warm
If I was, mira, if I was in L.A
Mmm, yeah, California dreamin'
On such a winter's day, yeah
On such a winter's day, yeah
On such a winter's day, eh-hey
Dream on, California dreamin', dream on
Mira, no sienta mal a nena no me tratas asi
Y yo me quiero morir muchachita
Oye mulatta mira, baby, eh California dreamin'
It doesn't matter how you say it
All I want to say is I love, I love
California, baby yeah
I really love, I really love, I really need a little bit of lovin yeah
California dreamin' oh yeah, Calfornia dreamin'
California dreamin'...
Muchas gracias por eso! I was looking for exactly this translation of what Jose sings in scat at the end of the song. Mi español está bien, no muy bien. I was able to make out some of it. Otra vez, gracias!
We use to say you'd be warm anyway
Tambien should be "tan bien"
Merci
no sienta mal a nena → no sea tan mala nena
Y yo me quiero → Que yo me quiero
Por favor, por favor → Por tu amor, por tu amor
mulatta → mulata
Jose once again delivers a soulful performance.
Mira.... this song and Light my fire are my two all time favorites by Jose..bueno bueno.
a soulful voice, a great selection of chords, and strings
Absolutely the best version of this soulful song👋🏽💕💕
Now watching Once upon a time in Hollywood, I just heard this song and I instantly recognized this man’s voice… just incredible and that guitarr, come onnn….!
Rick: *you’re a good friend.*
Cliff: *i try.*
🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Both of them are absolutely cute, gorgeous and charming. A very good and melancolic and joyfull movie. Tarantino Is a master.
Told that to Al Pacino in the start of the movie
Mayo 2020
This movie captured my life.. magnificent, music, fashion, tv, movies.......
I found the movie funny, well made. But pointless... First of all TOO MUCH FUCKING FEET SHOTS. We get it, their hippies and its tarantino, but thats too much.
Wow. This brings back so many memories. My dad has this album and would play it all the time.
