In this episode of WEEKENDERLANDER, we do things with a different focus - Ham Radio. The ham radio guys like to do this event called Field Day - where they go out into the woods (or in our case at the top of mountains) and test various radio equipment. There's a lot of overlap with overlanding with this type of thing, because we're basically just out testing gear, with a focus on ham radio gear. I tested my normal camping setups, adding a tarp awning and some other random gear - but mostly was out testing various ham radio setups like my Yaesu FT-891 with the ATAS-120a, and the Chameleon MPAS 2.0, as well as a variety of other setups. I was also using my FTM-500 and my new Yaesu FT5D. Hope you enjoyed this nerdier mini overlanding trip about radios.

How did the Mpas work with the tonneau cover as a ground plane?
Had an SWR of 3 and dropped it to 1 with a tuner. That was without the counterpoise wire attached at all. I'm gonna toy around with some bonding/grounding though and see what we can do.

Growing up my neighbor was a HAM operator and he talked to Russia,Germany and all over the world. He set up a large tower antenna and beer can “trap”, so the construction workers that were remodeling our house had a high power CB and talked to Australia (I live on the side of a “mountain” facing South in Honolulu) because of my neighbor’s antenna

Definitely go for your general. IMO HF is where it's at for emergency communications.

If the size fits, I suggest 4Runner as it is tried and trued last model year same reason I got my 2023 Tacoma.

I have the vx6r and a ftd5r. Struggling with the programming side. Able to do a video on how you did yours? How you picked the channels, set memory banks, murs?, etc etc? Checking for activity, who’s using repeaters blah blah

@@2ndorder40 I have the software for both. Unfortunately no one in my circle is experienced with this stuff so it’s been a struggle to find frequencies and repeaters that are active/have a fair amount of traffic. I am very green to the subject. I’ve messed around a little with repeater book and have gone to one mtg at a local radio club to meet some people.

99% of the time I just upload whatever I liked getting into that week, which usually has relevancy to the channel. 1% of the time I make a video outside of that general sphere, the golf r video being one of em.
