Being Canadian, these concession ads are just fascinating, not to mention delicious-looking.
Firstly, the fruit drinks came in interesting square, sealed cups. Similar 250 - 300 ml juices over here were in round cups with ridged sides and foil tops. They also depict them as so fresh, as if just-squeezed. I'm thirsty now.
The various ice cream cornets and sundaes make me crave some ice cream like little else. Oddly, I think it's due to the narration more so than the models shown. The sheer assortment of Gerry Anderson-inspired Zoom treats would have been irresistible to me as a kid. But one especially for girls? Maybe they prefer coconut flakes on top...
Finally, my keen eye has seen a "U" rating logo (universal, like a G rating) on one of the ads, and I saw another on one for a sparkling wine in a similar collection of ads on YT. Rating what are basically commercials? I understand red-band and green-band movie previews, but unless the model in the ad is going to drop her top from pleasure over her soft drink, it seems very weirdly bureaucratic.
Now I want some ice cream and lemon-lime juice. Damn.

@nuipret Many thanks for kind comments, I'm glad that you like them. I received them in the post on DVD-R from David Rayner to upload them on my channel.
David's clips were transfered using a Rank Cintel flying spot telecine (much better than my camera on the screen method). It makes for interesting comparison though.

Lyons Maid, Walls , Mothers Pride Bread, they were all made in Southall in the 1950/60s, a few hundered yards from where I used to live..

Cinema ads seemed really sophisticated in the 60s because they were in colour when you could only see black and white on your tv at home.

I’m totally shocked that Fab lollies were “especially for girls”.......I ate loads of them, not realising they weren’t meant for boys and it’s now clear they were the reason I developed manboobs in middle age......

As I remember it, when they started to use Sellotape joins instead of film cement joins in the 1970s, we had a lot of trouble with the splices and often had to remove them and remake them as film cement joins. The main problem with the Sellotape joins were that they sometimes covered six frames (three on each side of the splice) and the jerk on the image was very noticeable as they went through the projector gate. Film cement joins only covered a quarter of a frame.

There were on average only three 15 seconds ice cream adverts shown in cinemas on any one night, The reel shown on here (and on part one) is made up of numerous of these adverts that were shown over a ten year period from 1959 to 1969. These days, I'm told, the adverts go on for twenty minutes or more before the main feature starts (and, of course, there is no supporting feature, cartoons; shorts or a newsreel.

I used to like that Cornish Ice Cream it’s been years since I’ve seen the advert for it, It just had that unique taste unlike other ice creams but they were expensive so I didn’t get one very often, I loved going down to the usherette during the interval to get some sweets or a carton of Orange or a tub of ice cream if I was really lucky...oh or a bag of Butterkist popcorn and I still buy it today one of the few things that has stayed the same.

Nostalgic v nice thanks. Its funny how teh cinema ads were somehow different in effect than the TV ones. Yes its surely Terry Scott who did the v brief voiceover for the Suncrush ad - although quite a successful performer he was never too proud to do bit parts - probably needed the money like most people.

Thanks for your valid comment. Sadly, 35mm ads are now almost history.
RSA (later Carlton) assembled their own reels to be exhibited on alternate weeks.
They caused a few problems in latter years. The DP75 did not like their often mis-registered splices: The 180 deg. wrap on the holdback sprocket would 'roll over' a tooth when a faulty join passed over it (8 adverts and your lower loop became 2 frames shorter).
One could not assume that a reel of ads (as received) was fit for exhibition.

  • @Ampex196

I've not operated a Ross GC3 but seem to recall that they had two pad rollers on the feed sprocket. I can see how it could happen. Removing the first roller might be the solution (I doubt it would have any adverse effect).
Racks were rare though I do clearly remember a reel with an ad inserted reversed head to tail. It was a fish riding a bike (Guinness I seem to recall).
It might have been much more interesting had I screened it as received!

Yeah the same happened on the ross gc3, the top loop had to be a little bit longer to avoid this, even it is a flat gate machine, so we ran ads/trls on the second machine to start, then run the feature starting with the first machine, and pray in the intermission, sometimes they were made-up with a rack in them,so you had to checkm this was my job---teaboy to do, wheeere is he now...on the roof lol.
