    • @Enders_77
      @Enders_77 2 місяці тому +3

      Academia has done studies on this. The money gets lobbyists "access" to offices but doesn't get their votes. Game theory explains this a bit - why wouldn't politicians just take BOTH sides money and then vote they way they wanted to vote in the first place? Lobbyists have to be able to look at their clients and say "I talked to them about it" and so the money, at the least, buys them access for a meeting. You can, and should, make the case that them buying access crowds out constituent access (which it does) and that's a fair point. But most constituents couldn't make a clear case for why something is good or bad anyway. What you really need is to have a different organization (an association or trade org or whatever) play the same game. That's where it gets a bit shady because they don't have the same capital to throw around...
      Additionally, and you might find this hard to believe, but politicians are stupid. Like, extra stupid. They will pass laws that don't make sense and have TONS of unintended consequences. Their staffers aren't exactly the cream of the crop either. For all the negatives of lobbying, and there are certainly alot of negatives, they also serve as a way to make sure politicians don't break things. I've worked in state government now for awhile and... without agencies and lobbyists some really, really poorly thought out legislation would be passed and it would royally mess up the economy. Think like "every business has to provide a gun locker at their front door", "no business can close without giving a 30-day notice," or "insurance companies have to pay hospitals $1,000 for Tylenol" type shit. It's WILD.

    • @buddygrimfield7954
      @buddygrimfield7954 2 місяці тому

      @@Enders_77 What an absolute load of crap smh. No, politicians "break things" on the behalf of the lobbyists. Not despite them. And no. I suppose that you would say that Pharma lobbyists are simply trying to keep the greedy retches in DC from "messing up the economy"?? Well, how very convenient for them lol! Your comment is clearly just another apologist's crock. You probably heard it from a Libertarian.

    It's ridiculous how when anyone talks about raising crappy staff pay, it can't seem to be done without also raising the salary for senators and reps. They aren't linked in stone! This issue is rampant in higher ed as well: anytime there's a raise to help those $30-40K workers, it can't be done without the $80-100K peeps...which ends up diluting the whole thing down to pennies. Why is it so hard to give low earners a raise without the high-earners getting anything?

My take-away is that many people are self-serving, but not necessarily with the intent of screwing others in the process. The system they work within seems to have evolved into a bureaucratic nightmare over time and a good case was made for evening out the playing field (accountability for the 80% unregistered influence peddlers and financial contributors).
    Many thanks for putting this together. With a long-form conversation, I see that it's been out for a day with 50k views, which in isolation, doesn't seem justify the cost, but makes a great case for what BP brings to this space. I love this! 33 minutes in and both Guests are sincere and respectful in what they say and, um...uh... don't say. This was educational and fun. Yes, it's been not just DEPRESSING, but Empowering! This show has convinced me that I'm on the right path for me. I've been elected to local office and worked hard for reform, but now I understand why no matter how hard it is to fight the powerful, I will never take PAC Money...ever.

    "How would we know what people want without lobbyists? Our staffers can't possible know or figure it out without lobbyist?" Its called polling, the census, activist groups, and economic data. Hold town hall in your districts and make yourself available to everyday people. Also member's sole focus isn't just to get reelected. Its to enrich themselves as much as possible before they hit the door and transition to a lucrative position in the private sector. Usually for people whose interest they represented in congress. Also money is not speech. GTFO with this BS.

    I once met a devoutly catholic person who used to lobby for tobacco companies, he was currently trying to justify it by saying he was ok with it on the premise of freedom of speech/expression/each person’s right to partake in nicotine if they so choose; but he was unemployed and had been for a while. I think he didn’t have another employment option that aligned w his personal truth

    I like how they make is sound like it’s so complicated. Big corporations, billionaires etc pay a lobbyist and a lobbyist does something beneficial for a politician and everyone except the American people get what they want. It may not be as blatant as flat out buying a politician but they still do it.

    I believe paying congress and their staff more would change the composition of people. It is unlikely to improve behavior unless they are not able to monetize their decisions.
