I'm a convert to Latter Day Saints, and my mindset on this music is that I have hope that someday I will be with my loveones again hopefully praying....
I am not a Mormon, too. This is not important. What really matters is the fact that Bernstein's "Somewhere" is an incredible expression of the deepest yearning every human being wears deep inside. Thank you for the beautiful interpretation that is really a universal prayer of all people of goodwill; however, they express their faith in a higher being or sense of life.
You cannot fail to be so proud to be a member of such a humanitarian Church that provides succour, relief, healthcare and teaching to all faiths around the world, and the ethereal voices of arguably the finest Choir on the planet.
Leonard Bernstein possessed a genius abilitity and shared it with us brilliantly in everything he did. "Somewhere" is one of the most loving and tender pieces ever written. We are blessed by listening to this performance.
His Chichester Psalms is the hardest set I have ever sang, and I hated singing it too. It wasn't until after we performed it that I realized what a masterpiece it is
I came across this while looking for the pj proby version,I had never heard this version before but I'm glad i have, the only thing is I'm crying my eyes out remembering the loss of my two sisters and my little 8 year old brother.just listening to this makes me feel so close to them,i just wish rip meant return if possible
This song... so poignant for any who truly hear the words. A wish to be with someone we can't have, a wish to live a life we can't walk. Such beautiful lyrics that connect with every human being
The choir and orchestra perform perfectly as in All other works they choose in quality they can be trusted always energetic and accurate emotional delivery
Bernstein gave us gifts that will provide joy to countless future generations. This piece touches our deepest emotions. Love and despair but perhaps most importantly HOPE.
@@richardloehwing7207 I would love to hear the complete thought. When you are asked the question... Who would you like to have at your Dinner Table, dead or alive, I would invite Leonard Bernstein and Maya Angelou for starters.
With all of the problems regarding racial prejudice that still exists in this world today "West Side Story" now a movie more than 50 years old is still completely relevant today. Imo, the greatest musical ever filmed. And this gorgeous song sung when Tony dies in Maria's arms was absolutely the perfect but also an incredibly tragic ending to the movie.
Perfect song ending to what I have always believed to be the greatest musical/movie in history - West Side Story. Oh if it only it could have been for Tony and Maria! The thing is that the entire theme behind that masterpiece, hatred for another person just because he/she has a different skin color is still very relevant today.
Hello, I just looked this up in Wikipedia and found out that 3/4 of the population in Poerto Rico is white. Since the other gang in the musical is comprised of white members, I fail to see any animosity based on skin color, but rather on cultural background. I am a resident of an immigrant country myself, but I am not American, so would you please clarify your statement? Thank you!
Gang members have an unusually high sensitivity to variations in "whiteness" :) They do not care what the dictionary defines as "white" as opposed to "non white".
Danke!
I recently participated in a production of this musical, I miss it so badly and the cast and the music. This song brought tears to my eyes. I dont think many people really understand why this song is so moving. Think of each character in this play. A-rab, he goes home to his house and gets beaten by his drunk father every night. Riff, he knows that his gang won't back him up like he needs them to, his best man has left him for Maria, Action will start a fight anytime he gets the chance which could end the Jets if he picks the wrong one, A-rab is so twisted deep down that he is beyond fixing, and yet Riff somehow manages to keep them together. Bernardo, he came thinking that America would be an opportunity for him to become more successful in life, but now as a high schooler he has to fight his way to stay alive in a racist and demeaning world run by corrupt authority like lieutenant Schrank and officer krupke, who use every chance to call the Sharks names and order them around and demean them because of where they come from. It is no different then his home where crime ran rampant through the streets and corruption ruled them. Anita is fiery and powerful and she has a lot of passion, but after Bernardo died she is torn and terrified, trying to take care of Maria. She is almost raped by the jets who are all too twisted from abuse and neglect. She ends up being the reason tony dies and that kills her inside. Rosalia, she is like a lost child, missing her beautiful home, even though it wasn't that great. She escapes into the dilusion that her home is her somewhere because she does not want to be involved in the gang fights. Chino has had to grow up too fast, knowing that one day he would take over the gang if something happened to Bernardo. He doesn't want to marry Maria, he loves Rosalia but he is being forced to marry Maria anyway. Baby john is innocent and sweet, a superhero loving nerdy kid who has been thrown into a war, and deep down he knows he doesnt want to be there. Finally Tony and Maria. They had what could have been real love. It wasn't, but it could have been. They are separated and unable to be together because of this twisted world around them. Maria is going to be forced to marry a man that she doesn't love and who doesn't love her either. They end up lost and terrified, driving them to run away but the world gets in the way. the breaking point when tony dies, and Maria is left alone with no one to escape her drowning destiny. This song is about a place, maybe just somewhere there has to be a place where they can all live without war and live with content. This song is the tune of hope that there is such a place, the dream that such a place exists. It moves me to tears to see these broken children in the dark place they are, longing to be free.
I have always sung and two other amazing choirs are the bach choir and southend festival chorus and the southend boys choir who travel abroad and have beautiful voices we have talent in southend

How wonderfully stated. I lived that life and although it broke my heart, I would go back in a heartbeat if it was possible.
This a beautiful song for all of us no matter what religion a person is, it has meaning for hope, love , and forgiveness .

My dad came here in the 60's from PR. This story is his life.

Another great musical dealing with racism, is South Pacific by Rodgers and Hammerstein. Look up the song "You got to be carefully taught".
