    Great review! I have the strike eagle installed on my Ruger Precision Rifle. I figured it’s a great bang for the buck in a scope and the RPR being my first bolt action long range rifle it’ll do the job.

    Great video! I just purchased the 4-24 strike eagle for my CZ 455 tactical trainer in 22LR, and to go from 4 power to 24 on my 22 will be great! I too have a Gen 2 pst 5-25 ffp scope on my Tikka t3x tac a1, and its awesome! Can’t go wrong with Vortex optics. Keep up the great vids my friend!!

      Thanks! I’ve been using my 4-24 Strike Eagle quite a bit over the last month and shooting regularly from 400 yards out to 1,100 yards. It’s been reliable and consistent so far. I’m sure many of us will anticipate having good results from these strike eagles. All the best.

    I have one coming that's a strike eagle 3-18x44. For a 7mm-08 or 6.5 creedmoor hunting rifle it looks great. Like you said, out to 500 yards you don't really worry about the zero stop.

      I'd be glad to have you post your quick thoughts on the 3-18 when it arrives. I also have one on order and hope to add either comments or another review on this scope as well. Thanks. I've talked to Reg, an x-military guy who works for Vortex Canada. He has spent a day on the range shooting the 3-18 and loved the glass quality. I think you will be extremely pleased with it in a hunting application. All the best!

    They could start out at 3x but then its only going to max out at 18x. A 6 times zoom range is A LOT. If it were that easy they would probably just make a 1-50 and make everyone happy!

    so the parallax adjustment has no markings and the hold over markings have no real meaning for windage? I bought one for the 10 more MOA of internal elevation than my gen 1 pst and thinner reticle...

    I just picked up a Savage Ashbury in 6.5 creedmor. Was looking at this scope. What rings are you using?

    • @fod4250
      @fod4250  6 років тому +2

      I prefer a one piece ring. I find they are more reliable and put less torque on the tube. Even lapping a 2-piece is never the same as they can shift. I have one-piece rings from Vortex, Warne, etc. But I find even some of the economic ebay one-piece units are just fine. This one in the video is an: Angle indicator 25.4/30mm Ring 20mm Picatinny Rail Mount & Bubble Level Scope. Runs around $20 to $30. If you put this in eBay’s search bar I’m sure it will pull up this product. I’ve used this ring piece to shoot out to 1,100 yards and everything seems to hold true, so can’t complain. Hope this info helps.

    Putting this on a Remington 700 AAC-SD for target shooting and hunting. Beginner in all aspects, is this a smart choice? Also using DNZ Game Reaper mounts. Thanks for your help.

    • @fod4250
      @fod4250  6 років тому +2

      Hey Matt. I trust you’ll be happy with it for the price paid. Like I said in the video the glass is as good as my PST Gen 2 which is twice the price. Yes you can always find a better scope, but you’ll pay significantly more for it. If one day you have money to spend on more optics, then sell this one or put it on a 2nd gun. When the average joe owners a few guns it’s hard to afford $2,000 to $3,000 optics on each gun. For the majority of us who love shooting and hunting but aren’t rich, this scope should do the job just fine. I’m sure some well off gun snob out there will poo-poo this scope or even my tikka. But with economic scopes and tikka rifles I’ve shot sone less-than 1 inch 3 shot groups at 500 yards. This isn’t amazing. It just is what it is and allows me to hunt or shoot with a level of confidence to the range I can accurately perform. My suggestion is that the weak link isn’t the gun nor the optics. It’s usually us and our skill level or maybe a bad load. But if you hand load that should be resolved, or if you happen to find a factory load that works great, then you’re lucky. If you are a beginner, that rocks. Another guy getting into the sport! I’m happy. If you watch enough UA-cam videos on the shooting basics you’ll get some coaching that helps. Learn up on “natural point of aim”, “breathing techniques”, “trigger pull”, “having a good cheek weld”, “creating a solid rear rest for the buttstock”, etc. Find someone who has experience and learn from them. But always slow it down in your head when you target practice. Mentally record everything you are doing before and when you take a shot, and then replay it in your mind over and over. What did you do differently, what worked, what did you do wrong? Learn to eliminate bad habits and replace them with good habits. Don’t pull the trigger when you know you are wobbling - abort the shot, take a breath, and start again with every element that works to create the winning shot. Then slowly practice these winning habits until they become your natural operating system. You want your quick automatic shot to be a culmination of all the winning elements. Then when hunting or under stress in a competition and your brain is under pressure it is clearly imprinted in your mind the exact things to do to get that perfect shot off. I’m sure there are much better teachers out there than me, but I hope this can help and I wish you the best! Enjoy the learning process. Cheers.

    Im looking between vortex pst 4-16 or the strike eagle 3-18 which do you think has better glass and more durable ? I can buy the pst for $499 and strike eagle $450 so both close in price

    • @fod4250
      @fod4250  5 років тому

      Mr Gary sorry for the delay in replying.
      Both are good. I own both but prefer the 4-24. I think glass it’s equally good but with only 1x difference on the bottom end and 6x more on the top end I prefer the 24x zoom for precision. You can only shoot as good as you can see. Whether it’s hunting or target, zoom helps and enables confidence. For example, when I moved from 3-9 to higher magnification I moved from chest shots on deer to neck and head because of the magnification. I also shot tighter groups at longer distances. But there’s a purpose for everything. If it’s short range then 3-18. Hope this helps. However, I use my 4-24 at 4x in thick brush an feel fine with it and am able to quickly acquire my target.

    I’m torn between this model and the HS-T 6-24. I really like the zero stop on the HS-T but like the 4 power option like you mentioned of the strike eagle. Plus being about 150$ cheaper. Both are 2nd focal with the same reticle. What are your thoughts? Thanks

    • @fod4250
      @fod4250  6 років тому +1

      Tyler Gildersleeve
      I can respect that each person chooses what they want. So don’t hesitate to go with your gut. A few key differences that you may want to consider: 1) if you are using this for hunting how important is the wider field of view provided with the 4x vs the 6x. I hunt open spaces but also encounter some brush. 4x zoom would be much easier to find your target or take any quick shots or running shots. I’d put a lot of value on the 4x zoom over the 6x zoom. 2) can you achieve a zero like stop feature with the Stike Eagle scope? I think so. I put some white masking tape behind the elevation turret (but not covering the Center mark). Then I etched with a pen a line when the turret was at zero. This provided a line for me to easily see to guide me back to the correct revolution for zero. Hope this makes sense. The question I’d ask is: can you achieve the same results with the other scope? Which one will leave you in a situation where you are frustrated or wishing you had the other?
      I wonder if the HST will soon be discontinued. You could call Vortex and ask them if they know.
      Hope this helps.

    I had a strike eagle and after testing the bdc it was way off, I sent it back got another and it was off as well. Only bdc reticle that actually was spot on was the ACSS from Primary Arms. We all use them on our personal and work rifles. After a while our department ditched all strike eagles. We had way too many issues with them

    • @fod4250
      @fod4250  6 років тому

      Mike Larry Thanks for the response. Interesting to note your experience with this line. Was it a certain zoom ratio you found problematic? I continue to use mine out to 1,000 metres with complete reliability.

    • @brassvulcher8207
      @brassvulcher8207 6 років тому +1

      Fod it just doesn’t track right, if you link it to a Kestrel you will notice its not tracking true. In order to get real tracking you have to get into a NF or S&B PA scopes are just as bad at tracking but their reticles are spot on! I have their old Rgrid 4-14x and once u dial the turrets to zero you never touch them again, the reticle is a gem and does all the work! In some cases out performed our H58 in much higher dollar optic.

    • @fod4250
      @fod4250  6 років тому

      Mike Larry You mentioned that you had Strike Eagles on your work rifles for your department. What’s the work environment? I think it is fair to evaluate these as an econo line of scopes. I’d use them for target and hunting, but don’t recommend them even for serious competition let alone anything where your life depended on them like police work, etc. Context matters. I think folks may choose to use a PST gen 2 for some higher applications, but for police, military, and serious competition one shouldn’t be even considering an econo line of scope. The ones you suggested, such as Night Force are more appropriate, but that should be a given. Even Vortex admits that the internal turret mechanicals of their Strike Eagles are not at the level of a PST Gen 2 or a Razor, let alone a Night Force or a PA or S&B, etc.
      I also have a few scopes that I don’t trust their turret mechanics. Glass is fine and the etched retical is good so only shoot off the glass and try to never dial the turrets.
      All the best. Thanks for your thoughts.

    • @brassvulcher8207
      @brassvulcher8207 6 років тому

      Fod Any optic under 2k plus will not track true, I have found the PA stuff to be on because the reticles are made right, all tho the turrets are a joke their reticles are amazing! Once u get dialed in you never touch their turrets again.

    I’m surprised why they discontinued it. Good review mate!

    • @fod4250
      @fod4250  4 роки тому +3

      Yes! Very disappointing. I called Vortex USA and they said the reason they discontinued both the 4-24 and 3-18 models was because the demand was so high and production could not keep up with the orders. So why they didn't address their production issue I don't understand. You would think this is a good problem to have. From speaking with the rep it sounded like a lot of Vortex employees were disappointed with the decision that was made. He hinted that there may be a new product solution in the future. So we'll see what emerges in this build and price point for Vortex. I asked how they would deal with warranty issues. He said either repair, replace as they have any leftover refurbished models and after that negotiate with the customer to find them a suitable replacement product. In my evaluation, the closest product would be a PST Gen 2 5-25 or 3-15. Anything in the Diamond Back line would be a step down.
      Thanks for your comments on my video. All the best!

      @@fod4250 I know this is an old video but Vortex still list these SFP Strike Eagle scopes both the 3-18 and 4-24 as LIMITED DISTRIBUTION.
      I just bought a new 3-18 bundled with Vortex cm202 cantilever mount (which the mount normally sells for like $119 alone $179 msrp.) bought both in a bundle together brand new for $299.
      Mighty hard in my opinion to get a scope of this caliber for roughly say $250 considering the deal with the included mount!
      I am going to use it on a .22magnum hunting rifle.

      Rob Thomson hey I understand the delay. I’m in Canada and we don’t get any shipments of Vortex products until there is a level of saturation in the US first. I’ve been told that all European firearms and optics have to go to the US first before they are imported into Canada, both delaying the importation as well as increasing the cost. What are the trade routes to the UK? I don’t know. But I wish products could be more globally accessible. Sounds like someone there in the UK needs to start importing them. Cheers.
